48 results for finite classification

We survey the existing parts of a classification of finite groups generated by orthogonal transformations in a finite-dimensional Euclidean space whose fixed point subspace has codimension one or two and extend it to a complete classification. These groups naturally arise in the study of the quotient of a Euclidean spa…

Classification of 4-manifolds with finite fundamental groups using stable homeomorphism criteria.

problem Classifying 4-manifolds with finite fundamental groups.
method Using stable homeomorphism criteria based on quadratic 2-types and Kirby-Siebenmann invariant.
result Two 4-manifolds are CP2\mathbb{CP}^2-stably homeomorphic if and only if their quadratic 2-types are stably isomorphic and their Kirby-Siebenmann invariant agrees.

Homotopy classification for certain 4-manifolds with dihedral fundamental groups.

problem Classifying the homotopy types of specific 4-manifolds with dihedral fundamental groups.
method Using quadratic 2-type and combining with results from Hambleton-Kreck and Bauer.
result Homotopy types of finite oriented Poincaré 4-complexes are determined by their quadratic 2-type when fundamental group is dihedral.

We give a simplified proof of J. A. Wolf's classification of finite groups that can act freely and isometrically on a round sphere of some dimension. We slightly improve the classification by removing some non-obvious redundancy. The groups are the same as the Frobenius complements of finite group theory.

For a positive Hopf plumbed arborescent Seifert surface SS, we study the set of Hopf bands HSH\subset S, up to homology and up to the action of the monodromy. The classification of Seifert surfaces for which this set is finite is closely related to the classification of finite Coxeter groups.

The orbifold group of the Borromean rings with singular angle 90 degrees, UU, is a universal group, because every closed oriented 3--manifold M3M^{3} occurs as a quotient space M3=H3/GM^{3} = H^{3}/G, where GG is a finite index subgroup of UU. Therefore, an interesting, but quite difficult problem, is to classify the fin…

Generates infinite-depth hierarchical clusters from few examples.

problem Inadequate finite-sample clustering methods for fine-scale hierarchical structures.
method Classification fields generated by a local refinement rule, approximated by predictors.
result Learned predictors can approximate infinite-depth hierarchical structures.

Classifies finite orbits of mapping class group action on character varieties.

problem Classifying finite orbits of mapping class group action on character varieties of punctured spheres.
method Inductive proof using Lisovyy--Tykhyy's classification for 4-punctured spheres as base case.
result Proves no finite orbits for 7-punctured spheres and unique 1-parameter family for 6-punctured spheres.

Wall's finiteness obstruction is an algebraic K-theory invariant which decides if a finitely dominated space is homotopy equivalent to a finite CW complex. The object of this survey is to describe the invariant (which was first formulated in 1965) and some of its many applications to the surgery classification of manif…

Classifies orientation-reversing homeomorphisms of even periods on surfaces.

problem Classifying orientation-reversing homeomorphisms of even periods on surfaces.
method Following the approach of [1] and correcting errors in [1] for the case of periods multiple of 4.
result Classification for orientation-reversing homeomorphisms of periods multiple of 4.

Partial-monitoring games constitute a mathematical framework for sequential decision making problems with imperfect feedback: The learner repeatedly chooses an action, opponent responds with an outcome, and then the learner suffers a loss and receives a feedback signal, both of which are fixed functions of the action a…

Classification of curves up to affine transformation in a finite dimensional space was studied by some different methods. In this paper, we achieve the exact formulas of affine invariants via the equivalence problem and in the view of Cartan's lemma and then, state a necessary and sufficient condition for classificatio…

Quantum machine learning for 2D classification tasks using optimized feature maps.

method Optimized quantum feature maps and classical model training.
result Exponentially better scaling of deployed kernels in qubit number.

We classify up to coarse equivalence all countable abelian groups of finite torsion free rank. The Q-cohomological dimension and the torsion free rank are the two invariants that give us such classification. We also prove that any countable abelian group of finite torsion free rank is coarsely equivalent to Z^n + H whe…

In this paper we outline a program for the classification of Floer-type theories, (or defining invariants of finite type for families). We consider Khovanov complexes as a local system on the space of knots introduced by V. Vassiliev and construct the wall-crossing morphism. We extend this system to the singular locus …

The strong symmetric genus of a finite group is the minimum genus of a compact Riemann surface on which the group acts as a group of automorphisms preserving orientation. A characterization of the infinite number of groups with strong symmetric genus zero and one is well-known and the problem is finite for each strong …
