48 results for distance notion

We study a notion of distance between knots, defined in terms of the number of saddles in ribbon concordances connecting the knots. We construct a lower bound on this distance using the X-action on Lee's perturbation of Khovanov homology.

Theory of space-time currents for geometric evolutions.

problem Analysis of geometric evolutions driven by dislocations.
method Development of space-time integral currents with bounded variation, introduction of Lipschitz deformation distance.
result Agreement of Lipschitz deformation distance with integral Whitney flat metric for boundaryless currents.

We describe the precise structure of the distributional Hessian of the distance function from a point of a Riemannian manifold. In doing this we also discuss some geometrical properties of the cutlocus of a point and we compare some different weak notions of Hessian and Laplacian.

The aim of this article is to generalize the notion of the cut locus and to get the structure theorem for it. For this purpose, we first introduce a class of 1-Lipschitz functions, each member of which is called an {\it almost distance function}. Typical examples of an almost distance function are the distance function…

Extends Mahalanobis distance to Banach spaces for anomaly detection.

problem Anomaly detection in infinite-dimensional spaces.
method Generalizes Mahalanobis distance to Banach spaces via Cameron-Martin norm and variance norm.
result Kernelized nearest-neighbour Mahalanobis distance outperforms traditional methods for time series novelty detection.

Researchers modify dpd_p distance to handle long, thin splines.

problem Maintaining stability in convergence metrics with scalar curvature approaching positivity.
method Introducing and analyzing a modified dpd_p distance to handle persistent splines.
result The modified dpd_p distance provides a stable estimate, useful for geometric stability.

In infinite dimensional Heisenberg group, degenerate distances linked to unbounded curvature.

problem Degenerate distances and unbounded curvature in infinite dimensional Heisenberg group.
method Construct left invariant weak Riemannian and sub-Riemannian metrics, adapt sectional curvature definition.
result Degenerate distances coincide with unbounded sectional curvature.

A slice distance for the class of weak abelian Lp-bundles in 3 dimensions was introduced in a previous article in collaboration with Tristan Rivière, where it was used to prove the closure of such class of bundles for the weak Lp-convergence. We further investigate this distance here, and we prove more properties of it…

If ΣΣ and ΣΣ' are homotopic embedded surfaces in a 44-manifold then they may be related by a regular homotopy (at the expense of introducing double points) or by a sequence of stabilisations and destabilisations (at the expense of adding genus). This naturally gives rise to two integer-valued notions of distance bet…

Study stability of curvature-dimension condition for negative dimensions.

problem Stability of curvature-dimension condition with negative dimension parameters.
method Introduced CD(K, N)-condition for N < 0, defined distance d_{\mathsf{iKRW}}, proved convergence stability.
result Limit structure of converging metric measure spaces remains CD(K, N) for N < 0.

We define a notion of Hempel distance for one-sided Heegaard splittings and show that the existence of alternate surfaces restricts distance for one-sided splittings in a manner similar to Hartshorn's and Scharlemann-Tomova's results for two-sided splittings. We also show that every geometrically compressible one-sided…

The paper shows how to recover true node positions from a graph or similarity matrix.

problem Recovering true distances and positions from a graph or similarity matrix.
method Two steps: matrix factorisation followed by nonlinear dimension reduction.
result Nonlinear dimension reduction can recover latent positions close to a manifold where geodesic distance is encoded.

Maximum mean discrepancy (MMD), also called energy distance or N-distance in statistics and Hilbert-Schmidt independence criterion (HSIC), specifically distance covariance in statistics, are among the most popular and successful approaches to quantify the difference and independence of random variables, respectively. T…

Globalization is one of the central concepts of our age. The common perception of the process is that, due to declining communication and transport costs, distance becomes less and less important. However, the distance coefficient in the gravity model of trade, which grows in time, indicates that the role of distance i…

In high dimensions, the mean and geometric median are nearly identical.

problem Understanding the relationship between mean and geometric median in high-dimensional spaces.
method Analytical derivation and simulation of the distance between mean and geometric median.
result The distance between mean and geometric median vanishes with dimensionality in high dimensions.

In case of a standard form vN-algebra, the Bures distance is the natural distance between the fibres of implementing vectors at normal positive linear forms. Thereby, it is well-known that to each two normal positive linear forms implementing vectors exist such that the Bures distance is attained by the metric distance…

Study on volume of tubes and concentration in Riemannian geometry.

problem Understanding concentration loci in Riemannian manifolds and their relation to tube volumes.
method Provided a general formula for tube volumes, specialized to totally geodesic submanifolds, and investigated concentration loci.
result Explicitly proved concentration for codimension one cases and explored characterizations in Wasserstein and Box distances.

One of the most beautiful notions of metric geometry is the Gromov-Hausdorff distance which measures the difference between two metric spaces. To define the distance, let us isometrically embed these spaces into various metric spaces and measure the Hausdorff distance between their images. The best matching corresponds…
