48 results for trivial representation

We show the triviality of representations of the mapping class group of a genus gg surface in GL(n,C),Diff(S2)GL(n,C), Diff(S^2) and Homeo(T2)Homeo(T^2) when appropriate restrictions on the genus gg and the size of nn hold. For example, if SgS_g is a surface of finite type and φ:MCG(Sg)GL(n,C)φ: MCG(S_g) \to GL(n,C) is a homomorphism, then φφ is tri…

Global fixed points in low-dimensional surface group space correspond to trivial representations.

problem Understanding global fixed points in surface group deformation spaces.

result Global fixed points in low-dimensional surface group deformation spaces correspond to the trivial representation of the pure mapping class group.

We address the question: Does there exist a non-trivial knot with a trivial Jones polynomial? To find such a knot, it is almost certainly sufficient to find a non-trivial braid on four strands in the kernel of the Burau representation. I will describe a computer algorithm to search for such a braid.

The A-polynomial of a knot in S^3 defines a complex plane curve associated to the set of representations of the fundamental group of the knot exterior into SL(2,C). Here, we show that a non-trivial knot in S^3 has a non-trivial A-polynomial. We deduce this from the gauge-theoretic work of Kronheimer and Mrowka on SU_2-…

X.S. Lin's original definition of twisted Alexander knot polynomial is generalized for arbitrary finitely presented groups. J. Cha's fibering obstruction theorem is generalized. The group of a nontrivial virtual knot shown by L. Kauffman to have trivial Jones polynomial is seen also to have a faithful representation th…

We discuss how the global geometry and topology of manifolds depend on different group actions of their fundamental groups, and in particular, how properties of a non-trivial compact 4-dimensional cobordism MM whose interior has a complete hyperbolic structure depend on properties of the variety of discrete representa…

Motivated by the study of the interrelation between functorial and algebraic quantum field theory, we point out that on any locally trivial bundle of compact groups, representations up to homotopy are enough to separate points by means of the associated representations in cohomol- ogy. Furthermore, we observe that the …

A realization of a virtual link diagram is obtained by choosing over/under markings for each virtual crossing. Any realization can also be obtained from some representation of the virtual link. (A representation of a virtual link is a link diagram on an oriented 2-dimensional surface.) We prove that if a minimal genus …

Unitons, i.e.\ harmonic spheres in a unitary group, correspond to \lq uniton bundles\rq, i.e.\ holomorphic bundles over the compactified tangent space to the complex line with certain triviality and other properties. In this paper, we use a monad representation similar to Donaldson's representation of instanton bundles…

The Hitchin component is a connected component of the character variety of reductive group homomorphisms from the fundamental group of a closed surface S of genus greater than 1 to the Lie group PSL_m(R). The Teichmuller space of S naturally embeds into the Hitchin component. The limit points in the Thurston compactifi…

We classify the 55-dimensional homogeneous geometries in the sense of Thurston. The present paper (part 2 of 3) classifies those in which the linear isotropy representation is either irreducible or trivial. The 55-dimensional geometries with irreducible isotropy are the irreducible Riemannian symmetric spaces, while …

We prove that there is no algorithm that can determine whether or not a finitely presented group has a non-trivial finite quotient; indeed, this remains undecidable among the fundamental groups of compact, non-positively curved square complexes. We deduce that many other properties of groups are undecidable. For hyperb…

We show that the first Johnson subgroup of the mapping class group of a surface S of genus greater than one acts ergodically on the moduli space of representations of the fundamental group of S in SU_2. Our proof relies on a local description of the latter space around the trivial representation and on the Taylor expan…
