48 results for random counter-examples

Efficient algorithms learn non-binary concepts from random counter-examples.

problem Learning non-binary concepts from random counter-examples efficiently.
method Two simple LRC algorithms: deterministic and randomized.
result Both algorithms achieve optimal average learning time of O(log|H|).

We review the Burghelea conjecture, which constitutes a full computation of the periodic cyclic homology of complex group rings, and its relation to the algebraic Baum-Connes conjecture. The Burghelea conjecture implies the Bass conjecture. We state two conjectures about groups of finite asymptotic dimension, which tog…

Matrix completion is a well-studied problem with many machine learning applications. In practice, the problem is often solved by non-convex optimization algorithms. However, the current theoretical analysis for non-convex algorithms relies heavily on the assumption that every entry is observed with exactly the same pro…

Forward-Euler fails for simulating Wasserstein gradient flows with KL divergence.

problem Simulating Wasserstein gradient flows with forward-Euler discretization fails for KL divergence.
method Forward-Euler discretization for Wasserstein gradient flows with KL divergence.
result Forward-Euler discretization can be incorrect for Wasserstein gradient flows with KL divergence.

The paper disproves a generalized toral rank conjecture with various counter-examples.

problem The conjecture that the sum of Betti numbers of a compact manifold with a torus action is bounded by 2r2^r.
method Provided counter-examples of smooth nilpotent fibre bundles of nilmanifolds with torus fibres of rank rr.
result There are sequences of torus fibrations with total space cohomology dimensions converging to 0 as rank rr increases.

Cincer cleans both new and past data by identifying and relabeling suspicious and counter-examples.

problem Sequential learning under label noise, especially in applications with human supervision.
method Cincer uses example-based explanations to identify and relabel suspicious and counter-examples, leveraging Fisher information matrix approximation.
result Cincer achieves better data and models by clarifying the model's suspicions, especially with FIM approximation.

New method reduces variance in random coordinate descent for Langevin Monte Carlo.

problem Efficient sampling from log-concave distributions in high dimensions.
method Introduces RCAD, a variance reduction technique for RCD-LMC.
result RCAD-O-LMC and RCAD-U-LMC converge within the same number of iterations as classical LMC methods, saving computational cost.

TRASHFIRE improves model robustness by analyzing training rates and costs.

problem Understanding and predicting model robustness under adversarial conditions.
method Survival models, worst-case examples, cost-aware analysis.
result Deeper models offer marginal robustness gains due to inference time, not inherent robustness.

High-dimensional unimodal distributions can cause MCMC methods to fail.

problem Failure of MCMC methods in high-dimensional unimodal distributions.
method Examples and theoretical analysis of MCMC methods, including Metropolis-Hastings adjusted methods.
result MCMC methods can take an exponential run-time for high-dimensional unimodal distributions.

The paper presents counterexamples to LS-category conjectures and constructs maps between manifolds.

problem Counterexamples to LS-category conjectures for manifolds and their squares.
method Construction of manifolds and maps to analyze LS-category properties.
result Shows that mcatLS(M2imesM3)4{ m cat_{LS}}(M_2 imes M_3) \ge 4 and reduces Rudyak's conjecture.

We prove a modified version of Turbiner's conjecture in three dimensions and we give a counter-example to the original conjecture. The Lie algebraic Schrödinger operators corresponding to flat metrics of a certain restricted type are shown to separate partially in either Cartesian, cylindrical or spherical coordinates.

We show that there are high-dimensional smooth compact manifolds which admit pairs of Einstein metrics for which the scalar curvatures have opposite signs. These are counter-examples to a conjecture considered by Besse. The proof hinges on showing that the Barlow surface has small deformations with ample canonical line…

A virtual string can be defined as a closed curve on a surface modulo certain equivalence relations. Turaev defined several invariants of virtual strings which we use to produce a table of virtual strings up to 4 crossings. We discuss progress in extending the tabulation to 5 crossings. We also provide a counter-exampl…

Let GG be a group given by the presentation [<a_1,...,a_k,b_1,... b_k\,| a_i=u_i(\bar b), b_i=v_i(\bar a) \hbox{for} 1\le i\le k>,] where k2k\ge 2 and where the uiF(b1,...,bk)u_i\in F(b_1,..., b_k) and wiF(a1,...,ak)w_i\in F(a_1,..., a_k) are random words. Generically such a group is a small cancellation group and it is clear that $(a_1,...,…

It has been suggested in 1999 that a certain volume growth condition for geodesically complete Riemannian manifolds might imply that the manifold is stochastically complete. This is motivated by a large class of examples and by a known analogous criterion for recurrence of Brownian motion. We show that the suggested im…

We prove an extension of a celebrated equivariant bifurcation result of J. Smoller and A. Wasserman, in an abstract framework for geometric variational problems. With this purpose, we prove a slice theorem for continuous affine actions of a (finite-dimensional) Lie group on Banach manifolds. As an application, we discu…

We present a viscosity approach to the min-max construction of closed geodesics on compact Riemannian manifolds of arbitrary dimension. We also construct counter-examples in dimension 11 and 22 to the ε\varepsilon-regularity in the convergence procedure. Furthermore, we prove the lower semi-continuity of the index o…

We construct a time-symmetric asymptotically flat initial data set to the Einstein-Maxwell Equations which satisfies the inequality: m - 1/2(R + Q^2/R) < 0, where m is the total mass, R=sqrt(A/4) is the area radius of the outermost horizon and Q is the total charge. This yields a counter-example to a natural extension …

We review several results related to the characterization of polyhedra in hyperbolic 3-space. In particular we present Rivin's theorem that gives a characterization of compact convex hyperbolic polyhedra, and Hodgson's proof of the Adreev's theorem. We also review the analogous characterization of ideal polyhedra, and …

In the paper we consider the following conjecture: if a finite group GG possesses a solvable ππ-Hall subgroup HH, then there exist elements x,y,z,tGx,y,z,t\in G such that the identity HHxHyHzHt=Oπ(G)H\cap H^x\cap H^y\cap H^z\cap H^t=O_π(G) holds. The minimal counter example is shown to be an almost simple group of Lie type.
