Oriented ribbon graphs (dessins d'enfant) are graphs embedded in oriented surfaces. The Bollobás-Riordan-Tutte polynomial is a three-variable polynomial that extends the Tutte polynomial to oriented ribbon graphs. A quasi-tree of a ribbon graph is a spanning subgraph with one face, which is described by an ordered chor…
Study of discrete period matrices on embedded graphs, relating to Riemann surfaces.
A quasi-tree is a geodesic metric space quasi-isometric to a tree. We give a general construction of many actions of groups on quasi-trees. The groups we can handle include non-elementary (relatively) hyperbolic groups, rank 1 CAT(0) groups, mapping class groups and Out(Fn). As an application, we show that mapping clas…
3-manifold groups have a property that allows them to act on quasi-trees.
The curve graph and related graphs are hyperbolic and have quasi-tree fibers.
Oriented ribbon graphs (dessins d'enfant) are graphs embedded in oriented surfaces. A quasi-tree of a ribbon graph is a spanning subgraph with one face, which is described by an ordered chord diagram. We show that for any link diagram , there is an associated ribbon graph whose quasi-trees correspond bijectively to …
Let be a finite index subgroup of the mapping class group of a closed orientable surface , possibly with punctures. We give a precise condition (in terms of the Nielsen-Thurston decomposition) when an element has positive stable commutator length. In addition, we show that in these situations th…
We introduce Khovanov homology for ribbon graphs and show that the Khovanov homology of a certain ribbon graph embedded on the Turaev surface of a link is isomorphic to the Khovanov homology of the link (after a grading shift). We also present a spanning quasi-tree model for the Khovanov homology of a ribbon graph.
We simplify the construction of projection complexes due to Bestvina-Bromberg-Fujiwara. To do so, we introduce a sharper version of the Behrstock inequality, and show that it can always be enforced. Furthermore, we use the new setup to prove acylindricity results for the action on the projection complexes. We also trea…
In "A survey on the Turaev genus of knots," Champanerkar and Kofman propose several open questions. The first asks whether the polynomial whose coefficients count the number of quasi-trees of the all-A ribbon graph obtained from a diagram with minimal Turaev genus is an invariant of the knot. We answer negatively by sh…
Multicurve stabilizers' extensions are hierarchically hyperbolic.
A classical result states that the determinant of an alternating link is equal to the number of spanning trees in a checkerboard graph of an alternating connected projection of the link. We generalize this result to show that the determinant is the alternating sum of the number of quasi-trees of genus j of the dessin o…
New projection complex shows some surface homeomorphisms have positive commutator length.
Study the geometry of graph product extension graphs.
We prove the equivalence between a relative bottleneck property and being quasi-isometric to a tree-graded space. As a consequence, we deduce that the quasi-trees of spaces defined axiomatically by Bestvina-Bromberg-Fujiwara are quasi-isometric to tree-graded spaces. Using this we prove that mapping class groups quasi-…
This paper generalizes property (QT) to a broader class of groups.
The paper shows how contracting elements in groups lead to large quotients with specific growth rates.
The set of equivalence classes of cobounded actions of a group on different hyperbolic metric spaces carries a natural partial order. The resulting poset thus gives rise to a notion of the "best" hyperbolic action of a group as the largest element of this poset, if such an element exists. We call such an action a large…
The paper studies groups with specific actions on hyperbolic spaces and finds that subgroups are either amenable or contain a free group.
