48 results for n-sphere

Let K and L be disjoint closed oriented submanifolds of the n-sphere, with dimensions adding up to n-1. We define a map from their join K*L to the n-sphere whose degree up to sign equals their linking number, and then use this to find the desired linking integral.

For every N > 0 there exists a group of deficiency less than -N that arises as the fundamental group of a smooth homology 4-sphere and also as the fundamental group of the complement of a compact contractible submanifold of the 4-sphere. A group is the fundamental group of the complement of a contractible submanifold o…

After the surface theory of Möbius geometry, this study concerns a pair of conformally immersed surfaces in nn-sphere. Two new invariants θθ and ρρ associated with them are introduced as well as the notion of touch and co-touch. This approach is helpful in research about transforms of certain surface classes. As an …

It is a consequence of the classical Jordan bound for finite subgroups of linear groups that in each dimension n there are only finitely many finite simple groups which admit a faithful, linear action on the n-sphere. In the present paper we prove an analogue for smooth actions on arbitrary homology n-spheres: in each …

We show that if an open set in Rd\mathbb{R}^d can be fibered by unit nn-spheres, then d2n+1d \geq 2n+1, and if d=2n+1d = 2n+1, then the spheres must be pairwise linked, and n{0,1,3,7}n \in \left\{ 0, 1, 3, 7 \right\}. For these values of nn, we construct unit nn-sphere fibrations in R2n+1\mathbb{R}^{2n+1}.

A subset of the sphere is said short if it is contained in an open hemisphere. A short closed set which is geodesically convex is called a cap. The following theorem holds: 1. The minimal number of short closed sets covering the nn-sphere is n+2n+2. 2. If n+2n+2 short closed sets cover the nn-sphere then (i) their inte…

problem Constructing simplicial maps of any degree on spheres.
method Using connected sums and facet orientations, the paper develops a method to construct maps of any prescribed degree.
result The paper answers a question posed by Ryabichev and constructs simplicial maps of degree dd for large dd.

With any (open or closed) cover of a space T we associate certain homotopy classes of maps T into n-spheres. These homotopy invariants can be considered as obstructions for extensions of covers of a subspace A to a space X. We using these obstructions for generalizations of the classic KKM (Knaster-Kuratowski-Mazurkiew…

method Introducing a connecting function that links concircular vector fields to potential functions.
result The connecting function is crucial for characterizing nn-sphere and Euclidean space.

We develop a novel analogue of Euclidean PCA (principal component analysis) for data taking values on a Riemannian symmetric space, using totally geodesic submanifolds as approximating lower dimnsional submanifolds. We illustrate the technique on n-spheres, Grassmannians, n-tori and polyspheres.

In this paper we establish a relationship between geodesic nets and critical points of the distance function. We bound the number of balanced points for certain minimizing geodesic nets on manifolds homeomorphic to the nn-sphere. We also bound the length of certain minimizing geodesic nets.

Here, an extension of the Obata-Tanno's theorem to Finsler geometry is established and the following rigidity result is obtained; Every complete connected Finsler manifold of positive constant flag curvature is isometrically homeomorphic to an nn-sphere equipped with a certain Finsler metric, and vise versa.

It is known, that if a 2m-dimensional Kahler manifold satisfies the axiom of holomorphic 2n-spheres (1<n<m) or the axiom of antiholomorphic n-spheres (2<n), it is of constant holomorphic sectional curvature. In this paper the same result is obtained under weaker assumptions.

We show that a Riemannian foliation on a topological nn-sphere has leaf dimension 1 or 3 unless n=15 and the Riemannian foliation is given by the fibers of a Riemannian submersion to an 8-dimensional sphere. This allows us to classify Riemannian foliations on round spheres up to metric congruence.

A Darboux transformation for polarized space curves is introduced and its properties are studied, in particular, Bianchi permutability. Semi-discrete isothermic surfaces are described as sequences of Darboux transforms of polarized curves in the conformal n-sphere and their transformation theory is studied. Semi-discre…

We derive an integral formula for the linking number of two submanifolds of the n-sphere S^n, of the product S^n x R^m, and of other manifolds which appear as "nice" hypersurfaces in Euclidean space.
