We study the Fibered Isomorphism conjecture of Farrell and Jones for groups acting on trees. We show that under certain conditions the conjecture is true for groups acting on trees when the stabilizers satisfy the conjecture. These conditions are satisfied in several cases of the conjecture. We prove some general resul…

We prove an acylindrical accessibility theorem for finitely generated groups acting on R\mathbf R-trees. Namely, we show that if GG is a freely indecomposable non-cyclic kk-generated group acting minimally and MM-acylindrically on an R\mathbf R-tree XX then for any ε>0ε>0 there is a finite subtree YεXY_ε\subseteq X

We study the set of critical exponents of discrete groups acting on regular trees. We prove that for every real number δδ between 00 and 12logq\frac{1}{2}\log q, there is a discrete subgroup ΓΓ acting without inversion on a (q+1)(q+1)-regular tree whose critical exponent is equal to δδ. Explicit construction of edge-index…

It is well known that a countable group admits a left-invariant total order if and only if it acts faithfully on R by orientation preserving homeomorphisms. Such group actions are special cases of group actions on simply connected 1-manifolds, or equivalently, actions on oriented order trees. We characterize a class of…

This is an addendum to arXiv: 0810.5376. We show, using our methods and an auxiliary result of Bestvina-Bromberg-Fujiwara, that a finitely generated group with infinitely many pairwise non-conjugate homomorphisms to a mapping class group virtually acts non-trivially on an R\R-tree, and, if it is finitely presented, it…

We construct examples of finitely generated groups L that have non-trivial actions on R\mathbb{R}-trees but which cannot act, without fixing a vertex, on any simplicial tree. Moreover, any finitely presented group mapping onto L does have a fixed point-free action on some simplicial tree.

We show that for groups acting acylindrically on simplicial trees the KK- and LL-theoretic Farrell-Jones Conjecture relative to the family of subgroups consisting of virtually cyclic subgroups and all subconjugates of vertex stabilisers holds. As an application, for amalgamated free products acting acylindrically on …

We develop a coarse notion of bundle and use it to understand the coarse geometry of group extensions and, more generally, groups acting on proper metric spaces. The results are particularly sharp for groups acting on (locally finite) trees with Abelian stabilizers, which we are able to classify completely.

It is shown that for any action of a finitely presented group GG on an R\R-tree, there is a decomposition of GG as the fundamental group of a graph of groups related to this action. If the action of GG on TT is non-trivial, i.e. there is no global fixed point, then GG has a non-trivial action on a simplcial R\R

We provide new examples of acylindrically hyperbolic groups arising from actions on simplicial trees. In particular, we consider amalgamated products and HNN-extensions, 1-relator groups, automorphism groups of polynomial algebras, 3-manifold groups and graph products. Acylindrical hyperbolicity is then used to obtain …

We give a simple proof of the finite presentation of Sela's limit groups by using free actions on R^n-trees. We first prove that Sela's limit groups do have a free action on an R^n-tree. We then prove that a finitely generated group having a free action on an R^n-tree can be obtained from free abelian groups and surfac…

We give a geometric description of the Poisson boundaries of certain extensions of free and hyperbolic groups. In particular, we get a full description of the Poisson boundaries of free-by-cyclic groups. We rely upon the description of Poisson boundaries by means of a topological compactification as developed by Kaiman…

Stable commutator length scl_G(g) of an element g in a group G is an invariant for group elements sensitive to the geometry and dynamics of G. For any group G acting on a tree, we prove a sharp bound scl_G(g)>=1/2 for any g acting without fixed points, provided that the stabilizer of each edge is relatively torsion-fre…

Let Λ0Λ_0 be an ordered abelian group. We show how an ATF(Z×Λ0)\mathrm{ATF}(\mathbb{Z}\timesΛ_0) group -- that is, a group admitting a free affine action without inversions on a Z×Λ0\mathbb{Z}\timesΛ_0-tree -- admits a natural graph of groups decomposition, where vertex groups inherit actions on Λ0Λ_0-trees. A tubular group is a group that acts on a tree with Z2\mathbb{Z}^2 vertex stabilizers and Z\mathbb{Z} edge stabilizers. We study the construction of quasimorphisms on groups acting on trees introduced by Monod and Shalom, that we call median quasimorphisms, and in particular we fully characterise actions on trees that give rise to non-trivial median quasimorphisms. Let G be a group acting on a tree with cyclic edge and vertex stabilizers. Then stable commutator length (scl) is rational in G. Bestvina and Feighn showed that a morphism S --> T between two simplicial trees that commutes with the action of a group G can be written as a product of elementary folding operations.
