48 results for compactness question

The last years have seen striking improvements on Vaisman's question about existence of locally conformally Kähler (lcK) metrics on compact complex surfaces. The aim of this paper is two-fold. We review results of different authors which, for all known examples of compact complex surfaces, give a complete answer to Vai…

In 86, Ranjan questioned whether a submersion π:GBπ: G\to B from a compact simple Lie group with bi-invariant metric is a coset foliation or not, provided the submersion is Riemannian with totally geodesic fibers. Here we answer this question affirmatively, even when the submersion is defined only in an open subset of $G…

We study Gauss curvature for random Riemannian metrics on a compact surface, lying in a fixed conformal class; our questions are motivated by comparison geometry. Next, analogous questions are considered for the scalar curvature in dimension n>2n>2, and for the QQ-curvature of random Riemannian metrics.

We study global injectivity of proper branched coverings defined on the Euclidean nn-ball in the case when the branch set is compact. In particular we show that such mappings are homeomorphisms when n=3n=3 or when the branch set is empty. This proves the corresponding cases of a question of Vuorinen from [Vuo79].

We discuss a number of topics in the area of conformally compact Einstein metrics, mostly centered around the global existence question of finding such metrics with an arbitrarily prescribed conformal infinity. The paper is partly a survey of this area but also presents new results and a number of open problems.

In this paper we construct infinitely many examples of a Riemannian submersion from a simple, compact Lie group GG with bi-invariant metric onto a smooth manifold that cannot be a quotient of GG by a group action. This partially addresses a question of K. Grove's about Riemannian submersions from Lie groups.

In this paper, we address the following question: What does a typical compact Riemann surface of large genus look like geometrically? We do so by constructing compact Riemann surfaces from oriented 3-regular graphs. The set for such Riemann surfaces is dense in the space of all compact Riemann surfaces, namely Belyi su…

We show that an isometric action of a compact quantum group on the underlying geodesic metric space of a compact connected Riemannian manifold (M,g)(M,g) with strictly negative curvature is automatically classical, in the sense that it factors through the action of the isometry group of (M,g)(M,g). This partially answers a q…

Equivariant indices have previously been defined in cases where either the group or the orbit space in question is compact. In this paper, we develop an equivariant index without assuming the group or the orbit space to be compact. This allows us to generalise an index of deformed Dirac operators, defined for compact g…
