48 results for braid presentation

This paper is concerned with detecting when a closed braid and its axis are 'mutually braided' in the sense of Rudolph. It deals with closed braids which are fibred links, the simplest case being closed braids which present the unknot. The geometric condition for mutual braiding refers to the existence of a close contr…

We define braid presentation of edge-oriented spatial graphs as a natural generalization of braid presentation of oriented links. We show that every spatial graph has a braid presentation. For an oriented link it is known that the braid index is equal to the minimal number of Seifert circles. We show that an analogy do…

In the paper we give a survey of rather new notions and results which generalize classical ones in the theory of braids. Among such notions are various inverse monoids of partial braids. We also observe presentations different from standard Artin presentation for generalizations of braids. Namely, we consider presentat…

Study a specific line arrangement and compute its fundamental group via braid monodromy.

problem Compute the fundamental group of a specific line arrangement's complement.
method Use braid monodromy to compute the fundamental group.
result The resulting presentation of the fundamental group coincides with the modified Artin presentation.

In this paper we give new presentations of the braid groups and the pure braid groups of a closed surface. We also give an algorithm to solve the word problem in these groups, using the given presentations.

We give several new positive finite presentations for the pure braid group that are easy to remember and simple in form. All of our presentations involve a metric on the punctured disc so that the punctures are arranged "convexly", which is why we describe them as geometric presentaitons. Motivated by a presentation fo…

In the present paper we give a new method for converting virtual knots and links to virtual braids. Indeed the braiding method given in this paper is quite general, and applies to all the categories in which braiding can be accomplished. We give a unifying topological interpretation of virtuals and flats (virtual strin…

Virtual singular braids are generalizations of singular braids and virtual braids. We define the virtual singular braid monoid via generators and relations, and prove Alexander- and Markov-type theorems for virtual singular links. We also show that the virtual singular braid monoid has another presentation with fewer g…

Classifies braids with positive Artin presentations and their fundamental groups.

problem Classifying braids with positive Artin presentations and understanding their fundamental groups.
method Analyzing framed, closed pure n-braids in the 3-sphere to determine if they represent positive Artin presentations.
result Closed, pure n-braids B' in the 3-sphere that represent positive Artin presentations are strongly invertible, and some 3-manifolds do not admit such presentations.

We give formulae for the first homology of the nn-braid group and the pure 2-braid group over a finite graph in terms of graph theoretic invariants. As immediate consequences, a graph is planar if and only if the first homology of the nn-braid group over the graph is torsion-free and the conjectures about the first h…

Study of Lorenz links and T-links, showing equivalence and unique presentations.

problem Understanding equivalence and uniqueness of T-link presentations for Lorenz links.
method Minimal-braid approach, V-link braids, T-link parameters, geometric type criteria.
result Explicit correspondence between V-links and T-links, criteria for equivalence and uniqueness.

In the present paper, we introduce Z2\mathbb{Z}_2-braids and, more generally, GG-braids for an arbitrary group GG. They form a natural group-theoretic counterpart of GG-knots, see \cite{reidmoves}. The underlying idea, used in the construction of these objects --- decoration of crossings with some additional informa…

In the paper we give a survey on braid groups and subjects connected with them. We start with the initial definition, then we give several interpretations as well as several presentations of these groups. Burau presentation for the pure braid group and the Markov normal form are given next. Garside normal form and his …

The braid group of a complex reflection group is shown to be an index d subgroup.

problem Understanding the structure of braid groups associated with complex reflection groups.
method Presented a compatible presentation for the braid group of the orbifold quotient and a tagged triangulation of the disk.
result The braid group of the complex reflection group G(d,d,n)G(d,d,n) is an index dd subgroup of the braid group of the orbifold quotient.

Virtual braids are a combinatorial generalization of braids. We present abstract braids as equivalence classes of braid diagrams on a surface, joining two distinguished boundary components. They are identified up to isotopy, compatibility, stability and Reidemeister moves. We show that virtual braids are in a bijective…

Inverse braid monoid describes a structure on braids where the number of strings is not fixed. So, some strings of initial nn may be deleted. In the paper we show that many properties and objects based on braid groups may be extended to the inverse braid monoids. Namely we prove an inclusion into a monoid of partial m…

This paper presents a new exact sequence for orbifold braid groups and mapping class groups.

problem Understanding the relationship between orbifold braid groups and mapping class groups.
method Developed an exact sequence and used presentations of orbifold mapping class groups to determine the kernel.
result The kernel of the orbifold braid group is non-trivial and provides a new presentation.

The notion of a virtual knot introduced by L. Kauffman induces the notion of a virtual braid. It is closely related with a welded braid of R. Fenn, R. Rimanyi and C. Rourke. Alexander's and Markov's theorems for virtual knots and braids are proved. Similar results for welded knots and braids are also proved.

We present a new algorithm to solve the conjugacy problem in Artin braid groups, which is faster than the one presented by Birman, Ko and Lee. This algorithm can be applied not only to braid groups, but to all Garside groups (which include finite type Artin groups and torus knot groups among others).
