The paper confirms a conjecture about knots in aspherical 3-manifolds.
Let M be a closed, orientable, irreducible, non-simply connected 3-manifold. We prove that if M admits a sequence of Riemannian metrics whose sectional curvature is locally controlled and whose thick part becomes asymptotically hyperbolic and has a sufficiently small volume, then M is Seifert fibred or contains an inco…
We show that the Thurston seminorms of all finite covers of an aspherical 3-manifold determine whether it is a graph manifold, a mixed 3-manifold or hyperbolic.
In this short note we update a result proved in [16]. This will complete our program of [12] showing that the structure set vanishes for compact aspherical 3-manifolds.
Constructs 4-manifolds with positive Euler characteristic proving a conjecture.
Given a reducible -manifold with an aspherical summand in its prime decomposition and a homeomorphism , we construct a map of degree one from a finite cover of to a mapping torus of a certain aspherical -manifold. We deduce that has virtually infinite first Be…

Study pro- completions of orientable PD_n groups, proving best results in three cases.
The Cannon Conjecture for a torsionfree hyperbolic group G with boundary homeomorphic to S^2 says that G is the fundamental group of an aspherical closed 3-manifold M. It is known that then M is a hyperbolic 3-manifold. We prove the stable version that for any closed manifold N of dimension greater or equal to 2 there …
In 2007 Agol showed that if N is an aspherical compact 3-manifold with empty or toroidal boundary such that its fundamental group is virtually RFRS, then is virtually fibered. We give a largely self-contained proof of Agol's theorem using complexities of sutured manifolds.
We address a conjecture that -surjective maps between closed aspherical 3-manifolds having the same rank on must be of non-zero degree. The conjecture is proved for Seifert manifolds, which is used in constructing the first known example of minimum Haken manifold. Another motivation is to study epimorphisms …
The Borel Conjecture predicts that closed aspherical manifolds are topological rigid. We want to investigate when a non-aspherical oriented connected closed manifold M is topological rigid in the following sense. If f: N --> M is an orientation preserving homotopy equivalence with a closed oriented manifold as target, …
Ribbon cobordisms form a partial order on 3-manifolds.
Classifies 4-manifolds with elementary amenable groups and their boundaries.
We study closed, oriented 4-manifolds whose fundamental group is that of a closed, oriented, aspherical 3-manifold. We show that two such 4-manifolds are stably diffeomorphic if and only if they have the same w_2-type and their equivariant intersection forms are stably isometric. We also find explicit algebraic invaria…
The study examines conditions for Haken 3-manifolds and their fundamental groups.
The paper introduces the spirality character of the almost fiber part for a closed essentially immersed subsurface of a closed orientable aspherical 3-manifold, which generalizes an invariant due to Rubinstein and Wang. The subsurface is virtually embedded if and only if the almost fiber part is aspiral, and in this ca…
Integral foliated simplicial volume is a version of simplicial volume combining the rigidity of integral coefficients with the flexibility of measure spaces. In this article, using the language of measure equivalence of groups we prove a proportionality principle for integral foliated simplicial volume for aspherical m…
Mapping class groups of Haken 3-manifolds enjoy many of the homological finiteness properties of mapping class groups of 2-manifolds of finite type. For example, H(M) has a torsionfree subgroup of finite index, which is geometrically finite (i. e. is the fundamental group of a finite aspherical complex). This was prove…

Proves Calabi-Yau theorem for certain nonnegative curvature manifolds.
Paper shows hyperbolic 3-manifolds can sound the same but have different cohomology.
In this paper, we prove that the systolic volume of a closed aspherical 3-manifold is bounded below in terms of complexity. Systolic volume is defined as the optimal constant in a systolic inequality. Babenko showed that the systolic volume is a homotopy invariant. Moreover, Gromov proved that the systolic volume depen…
We fix a null-homologous, homotopically essential knot in a 3-manifold with PTFA fundamental group and study concordance of knots that are homotopic to . We construct an infinite family of knots that are characteristic to , and then use -methods to show that they are not concordant to .
Odd Fibonacci groups cannot form hyperbolic 3-orbifolds.
We introduce and define "oriented framed measured lamination links" in a 3-manifold . These generalize oriented framed links in 3-manifolds, and are confined to 2-dimensional improperly embedded subsurfaces of the 3-manifold. Just as some framed links bound Seifert surfaces, so also some framed lamination links boun…
This paper grew out of an attempt to find a suitable finite sheeted covering of an aspherical 3-manifold so that the cover either has infinite or trivial first homology group. With this motivation we define a new class of groups. These groups are in some sense eventually perfect. We prove results giving several classes…
An irreducible open 3-manifold is {\bf R}-irreducible if every proper plane in splits off a halfspace. In this paper it is shown that if such a is the universal cover of a connected, {\bf P}-irreducible open 3-manifold with finitely generated fundamental group, then either is homeomorphic to…
Let be a proper map between two aspherical compact orientable 3-manifolds with empty or toroidal boundary. We assume that is not a closed graph-manifold. Suppose that induces an epimorphism on fundamental groups. We show that is homotopic to a homeomorphism if one of the following holds: ei…
We consider the relation between simplicial volume and two of its variants: the stable integral simplicial volume and the integral foliated simplicial volume. The definition of the latter depends on a choice of a measure preserving action of the fundamental group on a probability space. We show that integral foliated s…
Paper confirms Whitehead's conjecture for aspherical 2-complexes.
In the context of Thurstons geometrisation program we address the question which compact aspherical 3-manifolds admit Riemannian metrics of nonpositive curvature. We show that non-geometric Haken manifolds generically, but not always, admit such metrics. More precisely, we prove that a Haken manifold with, possibly emp…
Aspherical configuration Lie groupoids complement is proven for a class of orbifolds.
The paper studies asymptotic dimensions of manifolds and spaces, proving key results about their geometric decompositions.
The main theorem shows that if M is an irreducible compact connected orientable 3-manifold with non-empty boundary, then the classifying space BDiff(M rel dM) of the space of diffeomorphisms of M which restrict to the identity map on boundary(M) has the homotopy type of a finite aspherical CW-complex. This answers, for…
In this paper we define and develop the theory of the cohomology of a profinite group relative to a collection of closed subgroups. Having made the relevant definitions we establish a robust theory of cup products and use this theory to define profinite Poincaré duality pairs. We use the theory of groups acting on prof…
This paper contains examples of closed aspherical manifolds obtained as a by-product of recent work by the author [arXiv:math.GR/0509490] on the relative strict hyperbolization of polyhedra. The following is proved. (I) Any closed aspherical triangulated n-manifold M^n with hyperbolic fundamental group is a retract of …
Let the complexity of a closed manifold M be the minimal number of simplices in a triangulation of M. Such a quantity is clearly submultiplicative with respect to finite coverings, and by taking the infimum on all finite coverings of M normalized by the covering degree we can promote it to a multiplicative invariant, a…
New tests detect asphericity in complex pairs, simplifying previous proofs.
This is a continuation of an earlier preprint (math.GT/0209121) under the same title. These papers grew out of an attempt to find a suitable finite sheeted covering of an aspherical 3-manifold so that the cover either has infinite or trivial first homology group. With this motivation we defined a new class of groups. T…
Relative notions of combinatorial asphericity have been used to prove that injective labeled oriented trees (which encode spines of ribbon 2-knots) are aspherical. This article presents an overview and comparison of the different notions of relative combinatorial asphericity. It also contains new results concerning cha…
