48 results for LERF property

We prove that every closed hyperbolic 3-manifold has a family of (possibly infinite sheeted) coverings with the property that the Cheeger constants in the family tend to zero. This is used to show that, if in addition the fundamental group of the manifold is LERF, then it satisfies the Lubotzky-Sarnak conjecture.

Suppose that all hyperbolic groups are residually finite. The following statements follow: In relatively hyperbolic groups with peripheral structures consisting of finitely generated nilpotent subgroups, quasiconvex subgroups are separable; Geometrically finite subgroups of non-uniform lattices in rank one symmetric sp…

We quantify Peter Scott's Theorem that surface groups are locally extended residually finite (LERF) in terms of geometric data. In the process, we will quantify another result by Scott that any closed geodesic in a surface lifts to an embedded loop in a finite cover.

In this paper, we give a complete characterization on which finitely generated subgroups of finitely generated 33-manifold groups are separable. Our characterization generalizes Liu's spirality character on π1π_1-injective immersed surface subgroups of closed 33-manifold groups. A consequence of our characterization …

In this paper, we will use Kahn-Markovic's almost totally geodesic surfaces to construct certain π1π_1-injective 2-complexes in closed hyperbolic 3-manifolds. Such 2-complexes are locally almost totally geodesic except along a 1-dimensional subcomplex. Using Agol and Wise's result that fundamental groups of hyperbolic …

Let M be a complete hyperbolic 3-manifold of finite volume that admits a decomposition into right-angled ideal polyhedra. We show that M has a deformation retraction that is a virtually special square complex, in the sense of Haglund and Wise and deduce that such manifolds are virtually fibered. We generalise a theorem…

We prove recognition theorems for codimension one manifold factors of dimension n4n \geq 4. In particular, we formalize topographical methods and introduce three ribbons properties: the crinkled ribbons property, the twisted crinkled ribbons property, and the fuzzy ribbons property. We show that X×RX \times \mathbb{R} i…

Asymptotic property C was introduced by Dranishnikov to study spaces with infinite asymptotic dimension. We show that asymptotic property C is preserved by infinite products. We also show that countable restricted direct products of countable groups with finite asymptotic dimension have asymptotic property C. Then we i…

The balance property is crucial for insurance pricing, ensuring total actuarial price equals loss. Maximum likelihood GLMs fulfill it, but Lindholm-Wüthrich suggests three methods, with constrained GLM being superior.

We present examples of metric spaces that are not Riemannian manifolds nor dimensionally homogeneous that satisfy the Tetrahedral Property. We prove some general results about quasi-actions on trees and define Property (QFA), which is analogous to Serre's Property (FA), but in the coarse setting. This property is shown to hold for a class of groups, including SL(n,Z)SL(n,\Z) for n3n\geq 3. We also give a way of thinking about Property (QFA) by breaking it down …
