New shapes enclose less volume than the sphere, surprising in 3D.

problem Finding the minimal volume enclosed by smooth spheres with bounded curvatures.
method Produced a family of bodies parameterized by ε, each bounded by a smooth topological sphere with principal curvatures in [-1, 1].
result The unit sphere does not enclose the minimal volume among all smooth spheres in R^3 with principal curvatures in [-1, 1].

Suppose that θ1,θ2,,θnθ_1,θ_2,\dots,θ_n are positive numbers and n3n\ge 3. Does there exist a sphere with a spherical metric with nn conical singularities of angles 2πθ1,2πθ2,,2πθn2πθ_1,2πθ_2,\dots,2πθ_n? A sufficient condition was obtained by Gabriele Mondello and Dmitri Panov (arXiv:1505.01994). We show that it is also necessary when w…

We resolve a question of Fuchs and Tabachnikov by showing that there is a Legendrian knot in standard contact three-space with zero Maslov number which is not Legendrian isotopic to its mirror. The proof uses the differential graded algebras of Chekanov.

This paper computes the quantization of the moduli space of flat SO(3)-bundles over an oriented surface with boundary, with prescribed holonomies around the boundary circles. The result agrees with the generalized Verlinde formula conjectured by Fuchs and Schweigert.

The non-abelian Hodge correspondence identifies complex variations of Hodge structures with certain Higgs bundles. In this work we analyze this relationship, and some of its ramifications, when the variations of Hodge structures are determined by a (complete) one-dimensional family of compact Calabi-Yau manifolds. This…

We give a list of Heun equations which are Picard-Fuchs associated to families of algebraic varieties. Our list is based on the classification of families of elliptic curves with four singular fibers done by Herfurtner. We also show that pullbacks of hypergeometric functions by rational Belyi functions with restricted …

The goal of this paper is to give an efficient computation of the 3-point Gromov-Witten invariants of Fano hypersurfaces, starting from the Picard-Fuchs equation. This simplifies and to some extent explains the original computations of Jinzenji. The method involves solving a gauge-theoretic differential equation, and o…

For any Legendrian knot in (R^3,ker(dz-ydx)), we show that the existence of an augmentation to any field of the Chekanov-Eliashberg differential graded algebra over Z[t,t^{-1}] is equivalent to the existence of a ruling of the front diagram, generalizing results of Fuchs, Ishkhanov, and Sabloff. We also show that any e…

A connection between holomorphic and generating family invariants of Legendrian knots is established; namely, that the existence of a ruling (or decomposition) of a Legendrian knot is equivalent to the existence of an augmentation of its contact homology. This result was obtained independently and using different metho…

Over the (1,n)(1,n)-dimensional real superspace, n>1n>1, we classify K(n)\mathcal{K}(n)-invariant binary differential operators acting on the superspaces of weighted densities, where K(n)\mathcal{K}(n) is the Lie superalgebra of contact vector fields. This result allows us to compute the first differential cohomology of %the L…

In 1997, Chekanov gave the first example of a Legendrian nonsimple knot type: the m(52)m(5_2) knot. Epstein, Fuchs, and Meyer extended his result by showing that there are at least nn different Legendrian representatives with maximal Thurston--Bennequin number of the twist knot K2nK_{-2n} with crossing number 2n+12n+1. In t…

Following Losik's approach to Gelfand's formal geometry, certain characteristic classes for codimension-one foliations coming from the Gelfand-Fuchs cohomology are considered. Sufficient conditions for non-triviality in terms of dynamical properties of generators of the holonomy groups are found. The non-triviality for…

This article discusses the twisted adjoint action Adgκ:GG\mathrm{Ad}_{g}^κ:G\rightarrow G, xgxκ(g1)x\mapsto gxκ(g^{-1}) given by a Dynkin diagram automorphism κAut(G)κ\in\mathrm{Aut}(G), where GG is compact, connected, simply connected and simple. The first aim is to recover the classification of κκ-twisted conjugacy classes by elem…

Fuchsian groups with a modular embedding have the richest arithmetic properties among non-arithmetic Fuchsian groups. But they are very rare, all known examples being related either to triangle groups or to Teichmueller curves. In Part I of this paper we study the arithmetic properties of the modular embedding and deve…
