48 results for Compact support

A support theorem for the horocycle Radon transform f \to \hat{f} is a property of the form \hat{f} of compact support \rightarrow f of compact support. Here we prove a variation of this result where support (\hat{f}) is outside a fixed horocycle in hyperbolic space.

A geometric version of the Poincaré Lemma is established for the topological vector space of differential chains. In particular, every differential k-cycle with compact support in a contractible open subset U of a smooth n-manifold M is the boundary of a differential (k+1) -chain with compact support in U. Applications…

When studying the causal propagation of a field in a globally hyperbolic spacetime M, one often wants to express the physical intuition that it has compact support in spacelike directions, or that its support is a spacelike compact set. We compare a number of logically distinct formulations of this idea, and of the com…

We present a new approach to Morse and Novikov theories, based on the deRham Federer theory of currents, using the finite volume flow technique of Harvey and Lawson. In the Morse case, we construct a noncompact analogue of the Morse complex, relating a Morse function to the cohomology with compact forward supports of t…

We prove that a monomorphic functor F:CompCompF:Comp\to Comp with finite supports is epimorphic, continuous, and its maximal \emptyset-modification FF^\circ preserves intersections. This implies that a monomorphic functor F:CompCompF:Comp\to Comp of finite degree degFndeg F\le n preserves (finite-dimensional) compact ANR's if the spac…

Plateau's soap film problem is to find a surface of least area spanning a given boundary. We begin with a compact orientable (n2)(n-2)-dimensional submanifold MM of Rn\R^n. If MM is connected, we say a compact set XX "spans" MM if XX intersects every Jordan curve whose linking number with MM is 1. Picture a soap fi…
