We determine all (1,1)-knots which admit an essential meridional surface, namely, we give a construction which produces (1,1)-knots having essential meridional surfaces, and show that if a (1,1)-knot admits an essential meridional surface then it comes from the given construction.

New parameterization for -knots simplifies their study.
We show that every strongly-cyclic branched covering of a (1,1)-knot is a Dunwoody manifold. This result, together with the converse statement previously obtained by Grasselli and Mulazzani, proves that the class of Dunwoody manifolds coincides with the class of strongly-cyclic branched coverings of (1,1)-knots. As a c…
Study calculates special knot properties for specific types of knots.
An -branched twist spin is a fibered -knot in which is determined by a -knot and coprime integers and . For a -knot, Lin proved that the number of irreducible -metabelian representations of the knot group of a -knot up to conjugation is determined by the knot determ…
Algorithm calculates knot Floer homology for a specific knot type.
We present two different representations of (1,1)-knots and study some connections between them. The first representation is algebraic: every (1,1)-knot is represented by an element of the pure mapping class group of the twice punctured torus. The second representation is parametric: every (1,1)-knot can be represented…
We present a combinatorial method for a calculation of knot Floer homology with Z-coefficient of (1,1)-knots, and then demonstrate it for non-alternating (1,1)-knots with ten crossings and the pretzel knots of type (-2,m,n). Our calculations determine the unknotting numbers and 4-genera of the pretzel knots of this typ…
In this paper we study the connections between cyclic presentations of groups and branched cyclic coverings of (1,1)-knots. In particular, we prove that every n-fold strongly-cyclic branched covering of a (1,1)-knot admits a cyclic presentation for the fundamental group encoded by a Heegaard diagram of genus n.
The aim of this paper is to investigate the relations between Seifert manifolds and (1,1)-knots. In particular, we prove that every orientable Seifert manifold with invariants {Oo,0|-1;(p,q),...,(p,q),(l, l-1)} has a cyclically presented fundamental group and, moreover, it is the n-fold strongly-cyclic covering of the …
The paper generates triangulations of 2-knot complements via spinning 1-knots.
In this paper we investigate the Alexander polynomial of (1,1)-knots, which are knots lying in a 3-manifold with genus one at most, admitting a particular decomposition. More precisely, we study the connections between the Alexander polynomial and a polynomial associated to a cyclic presentation of the fundamental grou…
We succeed to generalize spun knots of classical 1-knots to the virtual 1-knot case by using the `spinning construction'. That, is, we prove the following: Let be a spun knot of a virtual 1-knot by our method. The embedding type in depends only on . Furthermore we prove the following: The submanifo…
We prove that there are infinitely many -knots which are topologically slice, but not smoothly slice, which was a conjecture proposed by Béla András Rácz.
Characterizes knots with large Dehn surgeries.
The (ordinary) unknotting-number of 1-dimensional knots, which is defined by using the crossing-change, is a very basic and important invariant. It is very natural to consider the `unknotting-number' associated with other local-moves on n-dimensional knots, where n is a natural number. In this paper we prove the follow…
We study the connections among the mapping class group of the twice punctured torus, the cyclic branched coverings of (1,1)-knots and the cyclic presentations of groups. We give the necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence and uniqueness of the n-fold strongly-cyclic branched coverings of (1,1)-knots, thro…
We show that every nonzero integer occurs in the denominator of a boundary slope for infinitely many (1,1)-knots and that infinitely many (1,1)-knots have boundary slopes of arbitrarily small difference. Specifically, we prove that for any integers m, n > 1 with n odd the exterior of the Montesinos knot K(-1/2, m/(2m \…
We develop an algebraic representation for (1,1)-knots using the mapping class group of the twice punctured torus MCG(T,2). We prove that every (1,1)-knot in a lens space L(p,q) can be represented by the composition of an element of a certain rank two free subgroup of MCG(T,2) with a standard element only depending on …
Let M be , , or a lens space L(p,q), and let k be a (1,1)-knot in M, i.e., a knot which is of 1-bridge with respect to a Heegaard torus. We show that if there is a closed meridionally incompressible surface in the complement of k, then the surface and the knot can be put in a special position, namel…
A (1,1) knot K in a 3-manifold M is a knot that intersects each solid torus of a genus 1 Heegaard splitting of M in a single trivial arc. Choi and Ko developed a parameterization of this family of knots by a four-tuple of integers, which they call Schubert's normal form. This article presents an algorithm for construct…

New foliations show knot meridians are detectable.
Study proves 0-surgery characterizes infinitely many knots.
We study the relationship between fibered ribbon 1-knots and fibered ribbon 2-knots by studying fibered slice disks with handlebody fibers. We give a characterization of fibered homotopy-ribbon disks and give analogues of the Stallings twist for fibered disks and 2-knots. As an application, we produce infinite families…
Study compares WRT and CGP invariants using Habiro's series.
For a genus-1 1-bridge knot in the 3-sphere, that is, a (1,1)-knot, a middle tunnel is a tunnel that is not an upper or lower tunnel for some (1,1)-position. Most torus knots have a middle tunnel, and non-torus-knot examples were obtained by Goda, Hayashi, and Ishihara. In a previous paper, we generalized their constru…
We show that by performing the Gluck twist along the 2-knot derived from two ribbon presentations of the ribbon 1-knot we get the standard 4-sphere . In the proof we apply Kirby calculus.
New hyperbolic knots with convex Upsilon invariants constructed.
We characterize the (1, 1) knots in the three-sphere and lens spaces that admit non-trivial L-space surgeries. As a corollary, 1-bridge braids in these manifolds admit non- trivial L-space surgeries. We also recover a characterization of the Berge manifold amongst 1-bridge braid exteriors.
We investigate the asymptotics of the total number of simple -knots with Alexander polynomial of the form for some . Using Kearton and Levine's classification of simple knots, we give equivalent algebraic and arithmetic formulations of this counting question. In particular, thi…
Conditions for integer signatures of high-dimensional knots.
This paper presents evidence supporting the surprising conjecture that in the topological category the slice genus of a satellite knot is bounded above by the sum of the slice genera of and . Our main result establishes this conjecture for a variant of the topological slice genus, the -slic…
This is the third of three papers that refine and extend portions of our earlier preprint, "The depth of a knot tunnel." Together, they rework the entire preprint. In this paper, we use the theory of tunnel number 1 knots that we introduced in "The tree of knot tunnels" to strengthen the Tunnel Leveling Theorem of H. G…
In this paper we study the knot Floer homology of a subfamily of twisted torus knots where (mod ). Specifically, we classify the knots in this subfamily that admit L-space surgeries. To do calculations, we use the fact that these knots are knots and, therefore, admit a genus one Heeg…
We describe the genus two knots which admit a genus one, one bridge position. These are divided into several families, one consists of vertical bandings of two genus one -knots, other consists of vertical bandings of two cross cap number two 2-bridge knots, and the last one consists of genus two tunnel number on…
M. Scharlemann has recently proved that any genus one tunnel number one knot is either a satellite or 2-bridge knot, as conjectured by H. Goda and M. Teragaito; all such knots admit a (1,1) decomposition. In this paper we give a classification of the family of (1,1) knots in with crosscap number two (i.e., boundi…
A knot in S^3 is said to have crosscap number two if it bounds a once-punctured Klein bottle but not a Moebius band. In this paper we give a method of constructing crosscap number two hyperbolic (1,2)-knots with tunnel number one which are neither 2-bridge nor (1,1)-knots. An explicit infinite family of such knots is d…

Most torus knots have a middle tunnel, and non-torus-knot examples were obtained by Goda, Hayashi, and Ishihara. We generalize their construction and calculate th…
Knots without 2-torsion have minimal Khovanov homology rank.
Murasugi discovered two criteria that must be satisfied by the Alexander polynomial of a periodic knot. We generalize these to the case of twisted Alexander polynomials. Examples demonstrate the application of these new criteria, including to knots with trivial Alexander polynomial, such as the two polynomial 1 knots w…
An elementary introduction to Khovanov construction of superpolynomials. Despite its technical complexity, this method remains the only source of a definition of superpolynomials from the first principles and therefore is important for development and testing of alternative approaches. In this first part of the review …
This is the second of three papers that refine and extend portions of our earlier preprint, "The depth of a knot tunnel." Together, they rework the entire preprint. The theory of tunnel number 1 knots that we introduced in "The tree of knot tunnels" yields a parameterization in which each tunnel is described uniquely b…
A knot k in a closed orientable 3-manifold is called nonsimple if the exterior of k possesses a properly embedded essential surface of nonnegative Euler characteristic. We show that if k is a nonsimple prime tunnel number one knot in a lens space M (where M does not contain any embedded Klein bottles), then k is a (1,1…
New description of L-space knots leads to non-left-orderable surgeries.
New methods distinguish exotic 4-manifolds using Heegaard Floer homology.
For a knot , Kakimizu introduced a simplicial complex whose vertices are all the isotopy classes of minimal genus spanning surfaces for . The first purpose of this paper is to prove the 1-skeleton of this complex has diameter bounded by a function quadratic in knot genus, whenever is atoroidal. The second pur…
