48 results for universal description

In this paper we explore coarse properties of cusp-decomposable manifolds first defined by Nguyên Phan. We describe the large scale geometry of the universal cover of a cusp-decomposable manifold and of quasi-isometries between two such universal covers. This description will provide us the tools to prove quasi-isometr…

Study extends Vogel's universality to torus knots in adjoint representation.

problem Applying Vogel's universality to knot invariants in adjoint representation theory.
method Extending Vogel's parameters to include torus knots T[m,n]T[m,n] and focusing on T[4,n]T[4,n] with odd nn.
result Unified description of adjoint invariants for torus knots T[4,n]T[4,n] with odd nn.

Kernel methods have been widely applied to machine learning and other questions of approximating an unknown function from its finite sample data. To ensure arbitrary accuracy of such approximation, various denseness conditions are imposed on the selected kernel. This note contributes to the study of universal, characte…

A new approach to continuous-time universal portfolios using pathwise Itô calculus.

problem Continuous-time version of Cover's universal portfolio strategies.
method Pathwise Itô calculus approach to establish existence and properties of universal portfolio strategies.
result The universal portfolio strategy's portfolio value process is the average of all values of constant rebalanced strategies.

In the first of these two lectures, I describe a gauge theory approach to understanding quantum knot invariants as Laurent polynomials in a complex variable q. The two main steps are to reinterpret three-dimensional Chern-Simons gauge theory in four dimensional terms and then to apply electric-magnetic duality. The var…

We introduce the TUH EEG Seizure Corpus (TUSZ), which is the largest open source corpus of its type, and represents an accurate characterization of clinical conditions. In this paper, we describe the techniques used to develop TUSZ, evaluate their effectiveness, and present some descriptive statistics on the resulting …

We construct a cohomology theory for oriented links using singular cobordisms and a special type of 2-dimensional Topological Quantum Field Theory (TQFT), categorifying the quantum sl(2) invariant. In particular, we give a description of the universal dot-free sl(2) foam cohomology for links via a TQFT.

New invariant fully describes finite type invariants of knots in homology 3-spheres.

problem Constructing a universal finite type invariant for knots in homology 3-spheres.
method Refined construction of a new invariant that is strictly stronger and universal.
result New invariant fully describes the graded space of finite type invariants of knots in homology 3-spheres.

In the first of these two lectures, I use a comparison to symplectic Khovanov homology to motivate the idea that the Jones polynomial and Khovanov homology of knots can be defined by counting the solutions of certain elliptic partial differential equations in 4 or 5 dimensions. The second lecture is devoted to a descri…

We present a geometric approach, in the spirit of the Chern-Weil theory, for constructing cocycles representing the classes of the Hopf cyclic cohomology of the Hopf algebra H(n) relative to GL(n, R). This provides an explicit description of the universal Hopf cyclic Chern classes, which complements our earlier geometr…

The paper connects two descriptions of Teichmüller space tangent spaces using harmonic vector fields.

problem Describing tangent spaces to Teichmüller space in two different ways.
method Using harmonic vector fields inspired by harmonic maps to connect the two descriptions.
result A harmonic vector field on the upper half plane describes a connection on the universal Teichmüller curve.

We provide an equivariant description/classification of all complete (compact or not) non-negatively curved manifolds M together with a co-compact action by a reflection group W, and moreover, classify such W. In particular, we show that the building blocks consist of the classical constant curvature models and general…

method Developed RG flow to characterize signal propagation, solved layer-to-layer equations, and analyzed representation learning.
result Predictions of trained networks are nearly-Gaussian, with depth-to-width ratio controlling deviations.

The fundamental group of the Menger universal curve is uncountable and not free, although all of its finitely generated subgroups are free. It contains an isomorphic copy of the fundamental group of every one-dimensional separable metric space and an isomorphic copy of the fundamental group of every planar Peano contin…

We show that the number of entire maximal graphs with finitely many singular points that are conformally equivalent is a universal constant that depends only on the number of singularities, namely 2^$ for graphs with n+1 singularities. We also give an explicit description of the family of entire maximal graphs with a f…

The first part of this paper exposits a simple geometric description of the Kirby-Siebenmann invariant of a 4--manifold in terms of a quadratic refinement of its intersection form. This is the first in a sequence of higher-order intersection invariants of Whitney towers studied by the authors, particularly for the 4--b…

Complex-valued neural networks can approximate any continuous function with bounded widths and depths.
