48 results for toral rank conjecture

The paper disproves a generalized toral rank conjecture with various counter-examples.

problem The conjecture that the sum of Betti numbers of a compact manifold with a torus action is bounded by 2r2^r.
method Provided counter-examples of smooth nilpotent fibre bundles of nilmanifolds with torus fibres of rank rr.
result There are sequences of torus fibrations with total space cohomology dimensions converging to 0 as rank rr increases.

An action of a compact Lie group is called equivariantly formal, if the Leray--Serre spectral sequence of its Borel fibration degenerates at the E_2-term. This term is as prominent as it is restrictive. In this article, also motivated by the lack of junction between the notion of equivariant formality and the concept o…

We show how certain topological properties of co-K{ä}hler manifolds derive from those of the Kähler manifolds which construct them. We go beyond Betti number results and describe the cohomology algebra structure of co-Kähler manifolds. As a consequence, we prove that co-Kähler manifolds satisfy the Toral Rank Conjectur…

The Yamabe invariant is an invariant of a closed smooth manifold defined using conformal geometry and the scalar curvature. Recently, Petean showed that the Yamabe invariant is non-negative for all closed simply connected manifolds of dimension 5\ge 5. We extend this to show that Yamabe invariant is non-negative for a…

We prove that Out(FN)Out(F_N) is boundary amenable. This also holds more generally for Out(G)Out(G), where GG is either a toral relatively hyperbolic group or a finitely generated right-angled Artin group. As a consequence, all these groups satisfy the Novikov conjecture on higher signatures.

If n\mathfrak{n} is a Z+d\mathbb{Z}^d_+-graded nilpotent finite dimensional Lie algebra over a field of characteristic zero, it is well known that dimH(n)L(p)\dim H^{\ast }(\mathfrak{n})\geq L(p) where pp is the polynomial associated to the grading and L(p)L(p) is the sum of the absolute values of the coefficients of pp. From …

We study the long time behaviour of Ricci flow with bubbling-off on a possibly noncompact 33-manifold of finite volume whose universal cover has bounded geometry. As an application, we give a Ricci flow proof of Thurston's hyperbolisation theorem for 33-manifolds with toral boundary that generalizes Perelman's proof …

By results of Loeffler and Comezana, the Pontrjagin-Thom map from geometric G-equivariant bordism to homotopy theoretic equivariant bordism is injective for compact abelian G. If G = S^1 x ... x S^1, we prove that the associated fixed point square is a pull back square, thus confirming a recent conjecture of D. Sinha. …

Let JJ be a semisimple Lie group with all simple factors of real rank at least two. Let Γ<JΓ<J be a lattice. We prove a very general local rigidity result about actions of JJ or ΓΓ. This shows that almost all so-called "standard actions" are locally rigid. As a special case, we see that any action of ΓΓ by toral aut…

T. Kobayashi conjectured in the 36th Geometry Symposium in Japan (1989) that a homogeneous space G/H of reductive type does not admit a compact Clifford-Klein form if rank G - rank K < rank H - rank K_H. It is known that if two Dehn fillings on MM along the boundary produce a reducible manifold and a toroidal manifold, then the distance between the filling slopes is at most three.
