48 results for surgery theorem

In this paper we extend Thurston's hyperbolic Dehn surgery theorem to a class of geometrically infinite hyperbolic 3-manifolds. As an application we prove a modest density theorem for Kleinian groups. We also discuss hyperbolic Dehn surgery on geometrically finite hypebolic cone-manifolds.

We examine certain symmetries in the deficiencies of a rational surgery on a knot in S3S^3 by comparing the Spinc\text{Spin}^c-structures on the rational surgery with those on a related integral surgery. We then provide an application of these symmetries in the form of a theorem that obstructs Dehn surgeries in S3S^3. Thi…

result Identified the only two knots in the Poincaré homology sphere that admit half-integer lens space surgeries.

We show that for generic Riemannian metrics on a simply-connected closed spin manifold of dimension at least 5 the dimension of the space of harmonic spinors is no larger than it must be by the index theorem. The same result holds for periodic fundamental groups of odd order. The proof is based on a surgery theorem for…

The cosmetic surgery conjecture is a longstanding conjecture in 3-manifold theory. We present a theorem about exceptional cosmetic surgery for homology spheres. Along the way we prove that if the surgery is not a small seifert Z/2Z\mathbb{Z}/2\mathbb{Z}-homology sphere or a toroidal irreducible non-Seifert surgery then t…

In this article, we use the recently developed mean curvature flow with surgery for 2 convex hypersurfaces to prove several isotopy existence and finally extrinsic finiteness results (in the spirit of Cheeger's compactness theorem) for the space of 2 convex hypersurfaces in Rn+1\mathbb{R}^{n+1}.

A Dehn surgery on a knot KK in S3S^3 is exceptional if it produces a reducible, toroidal or Seifert fibred manifold. It is known that a large arborescent knot admits no such surgery unless it is a type II arborescent knot. The main theorem of this paper shows that up to isotopy there are exactly three large arborescen…

We show that if a manifold M admits a contact structure, then so does M\times S^2. Our proof relies on surgery theory, a theorem of Eliashberg on contact surgery and a theorem of Bourgeois showing that if M admits a contact structure then so does M\times T^2.

Surgery obstruction of a normal map to a simple Poincare pair (X,Y)(X,Y) lies in the relative surgery obstruction group L(π1(Y)π1(X))L_*(π_1(Y)\toπ_1(X)). A well known result of Wall, the so called ππ-ππ theorem, states that in higher dimensions a normal map of a manifold with boundary to a simple Poincare pair with $π_1(X)\congπ_…

In their article "The shape of hyperbolic Dehn surgery space," Hodgson and Kerckhoff proved a powerful theorem, half of which they used to make Thurston's Dehn surgery theorem effective. The calculations derived here use both halves of Hodgson and Kerckhoff's theorem to give bounds leading towards a practical algorithm…

Consider a three dimensional cusped spherical CR\mathrm{CR} manifold MM and suppose that the holonomy representation of π1(M)π_1(M) can be deformed in such a way that the peripheral holonomy is generated by a non-parabolic element. We consider the question of which Dehn surgeries along a given knot bound rational homology balls. We use Ozsváth and Szabó's correction terms in Heegaard Floer homology to obtain general constraints on the surgery coefficients. We then turn our attention to the case of integral surgeries, with particular emphasis on p…

These are notes of a talk given at the Mathematische Arbeitstagung 2005 in Bonn. Following ideas of Ozbagci-Stipsicz, a proof based on contact Dehn surgery is given of Eliashberg's concave filling theorem for contact 3-manifolds. The role of that theorem in the Kronheimer-Mrowka proof of property P for nontrivial knots…

A surgery on a knot in 3-sphere is called SU(2)-cyclic if it gives a manifold whose fundamental group has no non-cyclic SU(2) representations. Using holonomy perturbations on the Chern-Simons functional, we prove that the distance of two SU(2)-cyclic surgery coefficients is bounded by the sum of the absolute values of …
