Study finds chirally cosmetic surgeries on knots and manifolds, contradicting previous conjectures.

problem Disprove conjectures about chirally cosmetic surgeries and purely cosmetic surgeries.

result Found chirally cosmetic surgeries and purely cosmetic surgeries that contradict previous conjectures.

In this note, we obtain a new result concluding when contact (+1/n)-surgery is overtwisted. We give a counterexample to a conjecture by James Conway on overtwistedness of manifolds obtained by contact surgery. We list some problems related to the contact surgery.

Study shows links with trivial Lagrangian are slice, useful for surgery problems.

problem Understanding the slice properties of links and their implications for 4D surgery.
method Analysis of Nielsen moves, handle slides, and Seifert surfaces with trivial Lagrangian.
result A collection of links admits Seifert surfaces with trivial Lagrangian, proving their slice property.

We introduce a collection of 1/2-π1π_1-null 4-dimensional surgery problems. This is an intermediate notion between the classically studied universal surgery models and the π1π_1-null kernels which are known to admit a solution in the topological category. Using geometric applications of the group-theoretic 2-Engel rela…

We prove that the canonical 4-dimensional surgery problems can be solved after passing to a double cover. This contrasts the long-standing conjecture about the validity of the topological surgery theorem for arbitrary fundamental groups (without passing to a cover). As a corollary, the surgery conjecture is reformulate…

The problem of splitting a homotopy equivalence along a submanifold is closely related to the surgery exact sequence and to the problem of surgery of manifold pairs. In classical surgery theory there exist two approaches to surgery in the category of manifolds with boundaries. In the rel rel \partial case the surgery on…

Even though the disk embedding theorem is not available in dimension 4 for free fundamental groups, some surgery problems may be shown to have topological solutions. We prove that surgery problems may be solved if one considers closed 4-manifolds and the intersection pairing is extended from the integers, and prove a r…

We determine lens surgeries (i.e.\ Dehn surgery yielding a lens space) along the nn-twisted Whitehead link. To do so, we first give necessary conditions to yield a lens space from the Alexander polynomial of the link as: (1) n=1n=1 (i.e. the Whitehead link), and (2) one of surgery coefficients is 1, 2 or 3. Our interes…

New surgery exact triangles in Heegaard Floer homology for rational slopes.

result Solving the combinatorial problem for rational slopes, including tricky cases.

We examine certain symmetries in the deficiencies of a rational surgery on a knot in S3S^3 by comparing the Spinc\text{Spin}^c-structures on the rational surgery with those on a related integral surgery. We then provide an application of these symmetries in the form of a theorem that obstructs Dehn surgeries in S3S^3. Thi…

Topological 4-dimensional surgery is conjectured to fail, in general, for free fundamental groups. M. Freedman and P. Teichner have shown that surgery problems with an arbitrary fundamental group have a solution, provided they satisfy a certain condition on Dwyer's filtration on second homology. We give a new geometric…

We give two applications of the 2-Engel relation, classically studied in finite and Lie groups, to the 4-dimensional topological surgery conjecture. The A-B slice problem, a reformulation of the surgery conjecture for free groups, is shown to admit a homotopy solution. We also exhibit a new collection of universal surg…

The A-B slice problem, a reformulation of the 4-dimensional topological surgery conjecture for free groups, is shown to admit a link-homotopy+ solution. The proof relies on geometric applications of the group-theoretic 2-Engel relation. Implications for the surgery conjecture are discussed.

We propose a new algorithm for Dehn surgery problem, finding exceptional Dehn filling slopes for a given hyperbolic 3-manifold with a torus boundary, using a quantum invariant called "3D index". The invariant is defined using an ideal triangulation of the cusped 3-manifold. We test the algorithm for many examples.

We determine the lens spaces that arise by integer Dehn surgery along a knot in the three-sphere. Specifically, if surgery along a knot produces a lens space, then there exists an equivalent surgery along a Berge knot with the same knot Floer homology groups. This leads to sharp information about the genus of such a kn…

We consider the cosmetic surgery problem for two-bridge knots in the 3-sphere. It is seen that all the two-bridge knots at most 9 crossings other than 927=S(49,19)=C[2,2,2,2,2,2]9_{27} = S(49,19)=C[2,2,-2,2,2,-2] admits no purely cosmetic surgery pairs. Then we show that any two-bridge knot of the Conway form [2x,2,2x,2x,2,2x][2x,2,-2x,2x,2,-2x] with $x \ge …

Let KK be a rationally null-homologous knot in a three-manifold YY. Let K be a knot in the 3--sphere. An r-surgery on K is left-orderable if the resulting 3--manifold K(r) of the surgery has left-orderable fundamental group, and an r-surgery on K is called an L-space surgery if K(r) is an L-space. A conjecture of Boyer, Gordon and Watson says that non-reducing surgeries on K can be cla…

This paper concerns the truly or purely cosmetic surgery conjecture. We give a survey on exceptional surgeries and cosmetic surgeries.
