Study links with specific surgeries in 4-manifolds.
We study collections of curves in generic position on a closed surface whose complement consists of one disk only, up to orientation-preserving homeomorphism of the surface. We define a surgery operation on the set of such collections and prove that any two of them can be connected by a sequence of such surgeries.
We show that the distance of a link with respect to a bridge surface of any genus determines a lower bound on the genus of essential surfaces and Heegaard surfaces in the manifolds that result from non-trivial Dehn surgeries on the knot. In particular, knots with high bridge distance do not admit non-trivial non-hy…
Researchers find braid words for knots yielding prism manifolds.
Dehn surgery on knots in 3-manifolds rarely results in surface fibered manifolds.
Given a simply-connected closed 4-manifold and a smoothly embedded oriented surface , various constructions based on Fintushel-Stern knot surgery have produced new surfaces in that are pairwise homeomorphic to , but not diffeomorphic. We prove that for all known examples of surface knots constructed from …
Study of torus surgeries on knot traces, finding exotic surfaces and traces.
We considered a surgery, called Lagrangian attaching disk surgery, that can be applied to a Lagrangian surface L at the presence of a Lagrangian attaching disk D, to obtain a new Lagrangian surface L' which is always smoothly isotopic to L. We showed that this type of surgery includes all even generalized Dehn twists a…
It is shown that with finitely many exceptions, the fundamental group obtained by Dehn surgery on a one cusped hyperbolic 3-manifold contains the fundamental group of a closed surface.
Extends Seifert algorithm to 3-manifolds via surgery.
In this paper we prove that one can find surgeries arbitrarily close to infinity in the Dehn surgery space of the figure eight knot complement for which some immersed totally geodesic surface compresses.
Computing uniformization maps for surfaces has been a challenging problem and has many practical applications. In this paper, we provide a theoretically rigorous algorithm to compute such maps via combinatorial Calabi flow for vertex scaling of polyhedral metrics on surfaces, which is an analogue of the combinatorial Y…
In this paper we will show that two surfaces of the same genus and homology class in a simply connected 4-manifold are concordant. We will show they are often topologically isotopic when their complements have cyclic fundamental group. Finally, we will show that if they are 0-concordant, then surgery on one is equivale…

New method finds metrics on surfaces with prescribed curvatures using circle packings and surgery.
We will use immersed surfaces to study Seifert fibered surgery on Montesinos knots, and show that if then a Montesinos knot admits no atoroidal Seifert fibered surgery.
For a compact connected 3-submanifold with connected boundary in the 3-sphere, we relate the existence of a Seifert surface system for a surface with a Dehn surgery along a null-homologous link. As its corollary, we obtain a refinement of the Fox's re-embedding theorem.
By considering non-orientable surfaces in the surgered manifolds, we show that the 10/3- and -10/3-Dehn surgeries on the 2-bridge knot are not cosmetic, i.e., they give mutually non-homeomorphic manifolds. The knot is unknown to have no cosmetic surgeries by previously known results; in particular, …
Revised proof shows ribbonness of surface-links in 4-sphere.
We introduce a new operation, double point surgery, on immersed surfaces in a 4-manifold, and use it to construct knotted configurations of surfaces in many 4-manifolds. Taking branched covers, we produce smoothly exotic actions of Z/m x Z/n on simply connected 4-manifolds with complicated fixed-point sets.
In this paper, given a knot K, for any integer m we construct a new surface Sigma_K(m) from a smoothly embedded surface Sigma in a smooth 4-manifold X by performing a surgery on Sigma. This surgery is based on a modification of the `rim surgery' which was introduced by Fintushel and Stern, by doing additional twist spi…
Let be a knot in an L-space with a Dehn surgery to a surface bundle over . We prove that is rationally fibered, that is, the knot complement admits a fibration over . As part of the proof, we show that if has a Dehn surgery to , then is rationally fibered. In the c…
The paper explores extensions of local moves on string links and their relation to ribbon surfaces.
We use sutured manifold theory, essential laminations and essential branched surfaces to establish the upper bounds of distances between certain types of nonsimple Dehn surgery slopes. This is the revised version of an earlier preprint {\it Dehn surgery and simple manifolds.}
Geometrically, Legendrian surfaces related by surgery have related skein-valued cluster spaces.
Let K' be a hyperbolic knot in S^3 and suppose that some Dehn surgery on K' with distance at least 3 from the meridian yields a 3-manifold M of Heegaard genus 2. We show that if M does not contain an embedded Dyck's surface (the closed non-orientable surface of Euler characteristic -1), then the knot dual to the surger…

Researchers identify graph components for unicellular collections.
We introduce a surgery operation on symplectic manifolds called coisotropic Luttinger surgery, which generalizes Luttinger surgery on Lagrangian tori in symplectic 4-manifolds. We use it to produce infinitely many distinct symplectic non-Kahler 6-manifolds with which are not of the form for $…
We investigate the operation of torus surgery on tori embedded in . Key questions include which 4-manifolds can be obtained in this way, and the uniqueness of such descriptions. As an application we construct embeddings of 3-manifolds into 4-manifolds by viewing Dehn surgery as a cross section of a surgery on a su…
The paper establishes a discrete uniformization theorem for surfaces with piecewise hyperbolic metrics.
It is known that there are surface bundles of arbitrarily high genus which have genus two Heegaard splittings. The simplest examples are Seifert fibered spaces with the sphere as a base space, three exceptional fibers and which allow horizontal surfaces. We characterize the monodromy maps of all surface bundles with ge…
We characterize cutting arcs on fiber surfaces that produce new fiber surfaces, and the changes in monodromy resulting from such cuts. As a corollary, we characterize band surgeries between fibered links and introduce an operation called Generalized Hopf banding. We further characterize generalized crossing changes bet…
Extends string-net theory to 3D TQFT via surface graphs and surgery.
We introduce a notion of relative isospectrality for surfaces with boundary having possibly non-compact ends either conformally compact or asymptotic to cusps. We obtain a compactness result for such families via a conformal surgery that allows us to reduce to the case of surfaces hyperbolic near infinity recently stud…

Algorithm converts curves on ribbon surfaces to contact surgery diagrams.
A combinatorial condition is obtained for when immersed or embedded incompressible surfaces in compact 3-manifolds with tori boundary components remain incompressible after Dehn surgery. A combinatorial characterisation of hierarchies is described. A new proof is given of the topological rigidity theorem of Hass and Sc…
The study shows conditions for elliptic surfaces without 1-handles.
We define a notion of mean curvature flow with surgery for two-dimensional surfaces in with positive mean curvature. Our construction relies on the earlier work of Huisken and Sinestrari in the higher dimensional case. One of the main ingredients in the proof is a new estimate for the inscribed radius es…
