48 results for strongly inflexible

In this paper we construct an infinite family of homotopically rigid spaces. These examples are then used as building blocks to forge highly connected rational spaces with prescribed finite group of self-homotopy equivalences. They are also exploited to provide highly connected inflexible and strongly chiral manifolds.

Every closed oriented manifold MM is associated with a set of integers D(M)D(M), the set of self-mapping degrees of MM. In this paper we investigate whether a product M×NM\times N admits a self-map of degree dd, when neither D(M)D(M) nor D(N)D(N) contains dd. We find sufficient conditions so that D(M×N)D(M\times N) contains e…

Learning algorithms need bias to generalize and perform better than random guessing. We examine the flexibility (expressivity) of biased algorithms. An expressive algorithm can adapt to changing training data, altering its outcome based on changes in its input. We measure expressivity by using an information-theoretic …

In this paper we prove new embedding results for compactly supported deformations of CRCR submanifolds of Cn+d\mathbb{C}^{n+d}: We show that if MM is a 22-pseudoconcave CRCR submanifold of type (n,d)(n,d) in Cn+d\mathbb{C}^{n+d}, then any compactly supported CRCR deformation stays in the space of globally CRCR embeddable in…

The ever-increasing size of modern data sets combined with the difficulty of obtaining label information has made semi-supervised learning one of the problems of significant practical importance in modern data analysis. We revisit the approach to semi-supervised learning with generative models and develop new models th…

In this paper we propose a class of prior distributions on decomposable graphs, allowing for improved modeling flexibility. While existing methods solely penalize the number of edges, the proposed work empowers practitioners to control clustering, level of separation, and other features of the graph. Emphasis is placed…

Semi-supervised learning (SSL) provides a powerful framework for leveraging unlabeled data when labels are limited or expensive to obtain. SSL algorithms based on deep neural networks have recently proven successful on standard benchmark tasks. However, many of them have thus far been either inflexible, inefficient or …

A functorial semi-norm on singular homology is a collection of semi-norms on the singular homology groups of spaces such that continuous maps between spaces induce norm-decreasing maps in homology. Functorial semi-norms can be used to give constraints on the possible mapping degrees of maps between oriented manifolds. …
