A characteristic class is stable if it extends to a cohomology class of a homotopy colimit BSO of classifying spaces BSO_n. Simil…

We give a new upper bound on the stable commutator length of Dehn twists in hyperelliptic mapping class groups, and determine the stable commutator length of some elements. We also calculate values and the defects of homogeneous quasimorphisms derived from ω-signatures, and show that they are linearly independent in th…

For a Riemannian polyhedra, we study the geometry of the unit ball for the unidimensional stable norm (stable ball). In the case of a unidimensional Riemannian polyhedra (graph), we show that the stable ball is a polytope whose vertices are completely described by combinatorial properties of the graph. We study then th…

We show that for closed orientable manifolds the kk-dimensional stable systole admits a metric-independent volume bound if and only if there are cohomology classes of degree kk that generate cohomology in top-degree. Moreover, it turns out that in the nonorientable case such a bound does not exist for stable systoles…

We investigate the class of tempered stable distributions and their associated processes. Our analysis of tempered stable distributions includes limit distributions, parameter estimation and the study of their densities. Regarding tempered stable processes, we deal with density transformations and compute their pp-var…

An orientation is defined on a family of curve graphs on which the Torelli group acts. It is shown that the resulting signed stable length of an element of the Torelli group is a cohomology class. This cohomology class is half the dual of the contraction of the Johnson homomorphism, the socalled "Chillingworth class".

We study the stable norm on the first homology of a closed, non-orientable surface equipped with a Riemannian metric. We prove that in every conformal class there exists a metric whose stable norm is polyhedral. Furthermore the stable norm is never strictly convex if the first Betti number of the surface is greater tha…

For a finitely generated group, there are two recent generalizations of the notion of a quasiconvex subgroup of a word-hyperbolic group, namely a stable subgroup and a Morse or strongly quasiconvex subgroup. Durham and Taylor defined stability and proved stability is equivalent to convex cocompactness in mapping class …

We consider the notion of stable isomorphism of bundle gerbes. It has the consequence that the stable isomorphism classes of bundle gerbes over a manifold M are in bijective correspondence with H^3(M, Z). Stable isomorphism sheds light on the local theory of bundle gerbes and enables us to develop a classifying theory …
