48 results for splitting argument

Using basic properties of one-sided Heegaard splittings, a direct proof that geometrically compressible one-sided splittings of RP^3 are stabilised is given. The argument is modelled on that used by Waldhausen to show that two-sided splittings of S^3 are standard.

A Heegaard diagram for a 3-manifold M is a closed, oriented surface S together with a pair (X, Y) of compact 1-manifolds in S whose components serve as attaching curves for the 2-handles of the two sides of a Heegaard splitting for M. The diagram is positive if X and Y can be oriented so that the intersection number <X…

In geometric group theory one uses group actions on spaces to gain information about groups. One natural space to use is the Cayley graph of a group. The Cayley graph arguments that one encounters tend to require local finiteness, and hence finite generation of the group. In this paper, I take the theory of intersectio…

We prove general superrigidity results for actions of irreducible lattices on CAT(0) spaces; first, in terms of the ideal boundary, and then for the intrinsic geometry (including for infinite-dimensional spaces). In particular, one obtains a new and self-contained proof of Margulis' superrigidity theorem for uniform ir…

In 1980 J. Powell proposed that five specific elements sufficed to generate the Goeritz group of any Heegaard splitting of S3S^3. This conjecture remains unresolved for genus g4g \geq 4. Here a short argument shows that one of his proposed generators is redundant, in fact a consequence of three of the other four.

We show that the pluriclosed flow preserves generalized Kähler structures with the extra condition [J+,J]=0[J_+,J_-] = 0, a condition referred to as "split tangent bundle." Moreover, we show that in this in this case the flow reduces to a nonconvex fully nonlinear parabolic flow of a scalar potential function. We prove a num…

We prove that a metric measure space (X,d,m)(X,d,m) satisfying finite dimensional lower Ricci curvature bounds and whose Sobolev space W1,2W^{1,2} is Hilbert is rectifiable. That is, a RCD(K,N)RCD^*(K,N)-space is rectifiable, and in particular for mm-a.e. point the tangent cone is unique and euclidean of dimension at most NN. The…

The famous Haken-Kneser-Milnor theorem states that every 3-manifold can be expressed in a unique way as a connected sum of prime 3-manifolds. The analogous statement for 3-orbifolds has been part of the folklore for several years, and it was commonly believed that slight variations on the argument used for manifolds wo…

Let P,QP, Q be Heegaard surfaces of a closed orientable 3-manifold. In this paper, we introduce a method for giving an upper bound of Hempel distance of PP by using the Reeb graph derived from a certain horizontal arc in the ambient space [0,1]×[0,1][0,1]\times[0,1] of the Rubinstein-Scharlemann graphic derived from PP and QQ

This paper introduces \infty- and nn-fold vector bundles as special functors from the \infty- and nn-cube categories to the category of smooth manifolds. We study the cores and "n-pullbacks" of nn-fold vector bundles and we prove that any nn-fold vector bundle admits a non-canonical isomorphism to a decomposed …
