48 results for split automorphisms

We prove that any isometry of the graph of cyclic splittings of a finitely generated free group FNF_N of rank N3N\ge 3 is induced by an outer automorphism of FNF_N. The same statement also applies to the graphs of maximally-cyclic splittings, and of very small splittings.

result Conditions for the existence of infinite-order automorphisms and splittings.

The mapping class group of a Heegaard splitting is the group of automorphisms of the ambient 3-manifold that take the surface onto itself, modulo isotopies that keep the surface on itself. We characterize the mapping classes that restrict to periodic and reducible automorphisms of the surface.

We introduce a new integrable system hierarchy which is a restriction of the AKNS nxn hierarchy coming from an unusual splitting of the loop algebra. This splitting comes from an automorphism of the loop algebra instead of an automorphism of SL(n,C). It is known that the 2x2 KdV is the standard KdV hierarchy.

By using a notion of a geometric Dehn twist in k(S2×S1)\sharp_k(S^2 \times S^1), we prove that when projections of two Z\mathbb{Z}-splittings to the free factor complex are far enough from each other in the free factor complex, Dehn twist automorphisms corresponding to the Z\mathbb{Z}-splittings generate a free group of ra…

We show that, if HH is a random subgroup of a finitely generated free group FkF_k, only inner automorphisms of FkF_k may leave HH invariant. A similar result holds for random subgroups of toral relatively hyperbolic groups, more generally of groups which are hyperbolic relative to slender subgroups. These results fol…

We study automorphisms of a relatively hyperbolic group G. When G is one-ended, we describe Out(G) using a preferred JSJ tree over subgroups that are virtually cyclic or parabolic. In particular, when G is toral relatively hyperbolic, Out(G) is virtually built out of mapping class groups and subgroups of GL_n(Z) fixing…

We show that if the Hempel distance of a Heegaard splitting is larger than three then the mapping class group of the Heegaard splitting is isomorphic to a subgroup of the mapping class group of the ambient 3-manifold. This implies that given two handlebody sets in the curve complex for a surface that are distance at le…

An automorphism on a complex supermanifold M\mathcal M is called unipotent if it reduces to the identity on the associated graded supermanifold gr(M)gr(\mathcal M). These automorphisms are close to be complementary to those responsible for homogeneity of a supermanifold. In analogy, their study yields results on the clas…

Using the canonical JSJ splitting, we describe the outer automorphism group $\Out(G)$ of a one-ended word hyperbolic group GG.
