48 results for self-homotopy equivalences

We use the reflection group trick to glue manifolds with corners that are Borel-Serre compactifications of locally symmetric spaces of noncompact type and obtain aspherical manifolds. We call these \emph{piecewise locally symmetric} manifolds. This class of spaces provide new examples of aspherical manifolds whose fund…

Homotopy equivalences of 3-manifolds have a bounded power.

problem Understanding the behavior of self-homotopy equivalences of 3-manifolds.
method Proving the existence of a constant AMA_M for every self-homotopy equivalence ff of a 3-manifold MM such that fkf^k is homotopic to a homeomorphism for some integer kk.
result There exists a constant AMA_M depending only on the manifold MM such that for every self-homotopy equivalence ff of MM, there is an integer kk with 1kAM1 \leq k \leq A_M for which fkf^k is homotopic to a homeomorphism.

In this paper we construct an infinite family of homotopically rigid spaces. These examples are then used as building blocks to forge highly connected rational spaces with prescribed finite group of self-homotopy equivalences. They are also exploited to provide highly connected inflexible and strongly chiral manifolds.

A closed 4-manifold (or, more generally, a finite PD4PD_4-space) has a finitely dominated infinite regular covering space if and only if either its universal covering space is finitely dominated or it is finitely covered by the mapping torus of a self homotopy equivalence of a PD3PD_3-complex.

We consider compact, aspherical solenoids obtained as the inverse limit of a system of CW~complexes and covering maps. This includes PP-adic solenoids, as well as the universal hyperbolic solenoid of Teichmüller theory. Using ideas from shape theory, we classify maps between such solenoids up to homotopy, and we prove…

We define \emph{piecewise rank 1} manifolds, which are aspherical manifolds that generally do not admit a nonpositively curved metric but can be decomposed into pieces that are diffeomorphic to finite volume, irreducible, locally symmetric, nonpositively curved manifolds with π1π_1-injective cusps. We prove smooth (sel…

In this paper we discuss four problems regarding Markov equivalences for subclasses of loopless mixed graphs. We consider equivalence relations among smooth map germs with respect to geometry of G-structures on the target space germ. These equivalence relations are natural generalization of right-left equivalence (i.e., A-equivalence) in the sense of Thom-Mather depending on geometric structures on the target space germ. Unfor…

We examine an equivalence relation between free homotopy classes of closed curves on the pair of pants known as k-equivalence, a generalization of a concept previously defined by Leininger. We prove that two classes of closed curves on the pair of pants that are k-equivalent must also be 1-equivalent and 2-equivalent. …

Two Riemannian manifolds are called eigenvalue equivalent when their sets of eigenvalues of the Laplace-Beltrami operator are equal (ignoring multiplicities). They are (primitive) length equivalent when the sets of lengths of their (primitive) closed geodesics are equal. We give a general construction of eigenvalue equ…

The ν+ν^+-equivalence is an equivalence relation on the knot concordance group. This relation can be seen as a certain stable equivalence on knot Floer complexes CFKCFK^{\infty}, and many concordance invariants derived from Heegaard Floer theory are invariant under the equivalence. In this paper, two sufficient conditions are provided for given two K-equivalent map-germs to be bi-Lipschitz A-equivalent. These are Lipschitz analogues of the known results on C^r-A-equivalence (0r)(0 \leq r \leq \infty) for given two K-equivalent map-germs.
