48 results for reducible curves

We show that we can obtain a reducible spherical curve from any non-trivial spherical curve by four or less inverse-half-twisted splices, i.e., the reductivity, which represents how reduced a spherical curve is, is four or less. We also discuss unavoidable sets of tangles for spherical curves.

The Powell Conjecture offers a finite generating set for the genus gg Goeritz group, the group of automorphisms of S3S^3 that preserve a genus gg Heegaard surface ΣgΣ_g, generalizing a classical result of Goeritz in the case g=2g=2. We study the relationship between the Powell Conjecture and the reducing sphere comple…

The reductivity of a spherical curve is the minimal number of a local transformation called an inverse-half-twisted splice required to obtain a reducible spherical curve from the spherical curve. It is unknown if there exists a spherical curve whose reductivity is four. In this paper, an unavoidable set of configuratio…

Braid monodromy is an important tool for computing invariants of curves and surfaces. In this paper, the \emph{rectangular braid diagram (RBD)} method is proposed to compute the braid monodromy of a completely reducible nn-gonal curve, i.e. the curves in the form (yy1(x))...(yyn(x))=0(y-y_1(x))...(y-y_n(x))=0 where nZ+n\in \mathbb{Z}^{+}

The reductivity of a spherical curve represents how reduced the spherical curve is. It is unknown if there exists a spherical curve whose reductivity is four. In this paper we give an unavoidable set for spherical curves with reductivity four by considering 4-gons.

Let DnD_n denote the nn-punctured disk in the complex plane, where the punctures are on the real axis. An nn-braid αα is said to be \emph{reducible} if there exists an essential curve system $\C$ in DnD_n, called a \emph{reduction system} of αα, such that $α*\C=\C$ where $α*\C$ denotes the action of the braid αα o…

Haken showed that the Heegaard splittings of reducible 3-manifolds are reducible, that is, a reducing 2-sphere can be found which intersects the Heegaard surface in a single simple closed curve. When the genus of the "interesting" surface increases from zero, more complicated phenomena occur. Kobayashi showed that if a…

We give a geometric interpretation of Bar-Natan's universal invariant for the class of tangles in the 3-ball with four ends: we associate with such 4-ended tangles TT multicurves BN~(T)\widetilde{\operatorname{BN}}(T), that is, collections of immersed curves with local systems in the 4-punctured sphere. These multicurves …

Aramayona and Leininger have provided a "finite rigid subset" X(Σ)\mathfrak{X}(Σ) of the curve complex C(Σ)\mathscr{C}(Σ) of a surface Σ=ΣgnΣ= Σ^n_g, characterized by the fact that any simplicial injection X(Σ)C(Σ)\mathfrak{X}(Σ) \to \mathscr{C}(Σ) is induced by a unique element of the mapping class group Mod(Σ)\mathrm{Mod}(Σ).
