New groups from strand diagrams show polycyclic subgroups are virtually abelian and undistorted.

method Introducing Chambord groups from braided strand diagrams and semigroup presentations.
result Polycyclic subgroups in Chambord groups are virtually abelian and undistorted.

We study properly discontinuous and cocompact actions of a discrete subgroup ΓΓ of an algebraic group GG on a contractible algebraic manifold XX. We suppose that this action comes from an algebraic action of GG on XX such that a maximal reductive subgroup of GG fixes a point. When the real rank of any simple subg…

Let X be a finite CW-complex of dimension q. If its fundamental group π1(X)π_{1}(X) is polycyclic of Hirsch number h>q we show that at least one of the homotopy groups πi(X)π_{i}(X) is not finitely generated. If h=q or h=q-1 the same conclusion holds unless X is an Eilenberg-McLane space K(π1(X),1)K(π_{1}(X),1).

We show that any subgroup of a (virtually) nilpotent-by-polycyclic group satisfies the bounded packing property of Hruska-Wise. In particular, the same is true about metabelian groups and linear solvable groups. However, we find an example of a finitely generated solvable group of derived length 3 which admits a finite…

A classical result by K.B. Lee states that every group morphism between almost crystallographic groups is induced by an affine map on the nilpotent Lie group whereon these groups by definition act. It is the main technique for studying morphisms between virtually nilpotent groups, having important applications in fixed…

We show certain symmetry of the dimensions of cohomologies of the funda- mental groups of compact Sasakian manifolds by using the Hodge theory of twisted basic cohomology. We consider aspherical manifolds with torsion-free virtually polycyclic fundamental groups, constructed by Baues. We prove that if those manifolds are cohomologically symplectic then they are symplectic. As a corollary we show that cohomologically symplectic solvmanifolds are symplectic.

We show that the asymptotic dimension of box spaces behaves (sub)additively with respect to extensions of groups. As a result, we obtain that for an elementary amenable group, the asymptotic dimension of any of its box spaces is bounded above by its Hirsch length. This bound is shown to be an equality for a large subcl…

We show that the group cohomology of torsion-free virtually polycyclic groups and the continuous cohomology of simply connected solvable Lie groups can be computed by the rational cohomology of algebraic groups. Compact Kähler solvmanifolds are classified up to biholomorphism. A proof of a conjecture Benson and Gordon, that completely solvable compact Kähler solvmanifolds are tori is deduced from this. The main ingredient in the proof is a restriction theorem for polycyclic Kähler groups proved by Nori and the author.

Let N be a simply connected, connected real nilpotent Lie group of finite dimension n. We study subgroups ΓΓ in $\Aff (N)=N\rtimes \Aut (N)$ acting properly discontinuously and cocompactly on N. This situation is a natural generalization of the so-called affine crystallographic groups. We prove that for all dimensions…
