48 results for non-isotopic surfaces

We use the methods of Hedden, Juhasz, and Sarkar to exhibit a set of arborescent knots that bound large numbers of non-isotopic minimal genus spanning surfaces. In particular, we describe a sequence of prime knots K_{n} which will bound at least 2^{2n-1} non-isotopic minimal spanning surfaces of genus n.

For each member of an infinite family of homology classes in the K3-surface E(2), we construct infinitely many non-isotopic symplectic tori representing this homology class. This family has an infinite subset of primitive classes. We also explain how these tori can be non-isotopically embedded as homologous symplectic …

We construct an infinite family of homologous, non-isotopic, symplectic surfaces of any genus greater than one in a certain class of closed, simply connected, symplectic four-manifolds. Our construction is the first example of this phenomenon for surfaces of genus greater than one.

A modular tensor category C\mathcal{C} gives rise to a Reshetikhin-Turaev type topological quantum field theory which is defined on 3-dimensional bordisms with embedded C\mathcal{C}-coloured ribbon graphs. We extend this construction to include bordisms with surface defects which in turn can meet along line defects. …

We study the sutured Floer homology invariants of the sutured manifold obtained by cutting a knot complement along a Seifert surface, R. We show that these invariants are finer than the "top term" of the knot Floer homology, which they contain. In particular, we use sutured Floer homology to distinguish two non-isotopi…

When a Dehn filled link manifold contains a geometrically incompressible one-sided surface, it is shown there is a unique boundary incompressible position that the surface can take in the link space. We expect manifolds obtained by Dehn filling to inherit properties from the knot manifold. To what extent does that hold true for the Heegaard structure?
