We use the methods of Hedden, Juhasz, and Sarkar to exhibit a set of arborescent knots that bound large numbers of non-isotopic minimal genus spanning surfaces. In particular, we describe a sequence of prime knots K_{n} which will bound at least 2^{2n-1} non-isotopic minimal spanning surfaces of genus n.
For each member of an infinite family of homology classes in the K3-surface E(2), we construct infinitely many non-isotopic symplectic tori representing this homology class. This family has an infinite subset of primitive classes. We also explain how these tori can be non-isotopically embedded as homologous symplectic …
We construct an infinite family of homologous, non-isotopic, symplectic surfaces of any genus greater than one in a certain class of closed, simply connected, symplectic four-manifolds. Our construction is the first example of this phenomenon for surfaces of genus greater than one.
Study infinite symplectic forms on ruled surfaces.
Let E(1)_p denote the rational elliptic surface with a single multiple fiber f_p of multiplicity p. We construct an infinite family of homologous non-isotopic symplectic tori representing the primitive class [f_p] in E(1)_p when p>1. As a consequence, we get infinitely many non-isotopic symplectic tori in the fiber cla…
Let E(1)_K denote the closed 4-manifold that is homotopy equivalent (hence homeomorphic) to the rational elliptic surface E(1) and is obtained by performing Fintushel-Stern knot surgery on E(1) using a knot K in S^3. We construct an infinite family of homologous non-isotopic symplectic tori representing a primitive hom…
For any pair of integers and , we construct an infinite family of mutually non-isotopic symplectic tori representing the homology class of an elliptic surface E(n), where is the homology class of the fiber. We also show how such families can be non-isotopically and symplectically embedde…
New spheres can split a 4D link in ways not possible in 3D.
A modular tensor category gives rise to a Reshetikhin-Turaev type topological quantum field theory which is defined on 3-dimensional bordisms with embedded -coloured ribbon graphs. We extend this construction to include bordisms with surface defects which in turn can meet along line defects. …

New ribbon disks in 4D space, non-isotopic to each other.
We construct a family of pairs of non-isotopic symplectic surfaces in the standard symplectic -disk such that they are bounded by the same transverse knot in the standard contact -sphere and fundamental groups of their complements are isomorphic. In the appendix, we prove explicitly that one can obtain a symplect…

Manufacturing infinite sets of knotted and unknotted surfaces in 4-manifolds.
We describe for each postive integer a 3-manifold with Heegaard surfaces of genus and such that any common stabilization of these two surfaces has genus at least . We also show that for every positive , there is a 3-manifold that has pairwise non-isotopic Heegaard splittings of the same gen…
We study the sutured Floer homology invariants of the sutured manifold obtained by cutting a knot complement along a Seifert surface, R. We show that these invariants are finer than the "top term" of the knot Floer homology, which they contain. In particular, we use sutured Floer homology to distinguish two non-isotopi…
Let K be a knot in S^3 of genus g and let n>0. We show that if rk HFK(K,g) < 2^{n+1} (where HFK denotes knot Floer homology), in particular if K is an alternating knot such that the leading coefficient a_g of its Alexander polynomial satisfies |a_g| <2^{n+1}, then K has at most n pairwise disjoint non-isotopic genus g …
New knots bound multiple non-isotopic ribbon disks.
When a Dehn filled link manifold contains a geometrically incompressible one-sided surface, it is shown there is a unique boundary incompressible position that the surface can take in the link space. The proof uses a version of the sweep-out technique from two-sided Heegaard splitting theory. When applied to one-sided …
We give an exponential upper and a quadratic lower bound on the number of pairwise non-isotopic simple closed curves can be placed on a closed surface of genus g such that any two of the curves intersects at most once. Although the gap is large, both bounds are the best known for large genus. In genus one and two, we s…
In this paper we find a family of knots with trivial Alexander polynomial, and construct two non-isotopic Seifert surfaces for each member in our family. In order to distinguish the surfaces we study the sutured Floer homology invariants of the sutured manifolds obtained by cutting the knot complements along the Seifer…
The purpose of this paper is to investigate the following problem: For a fixed 2-dimensional homology class K in a simply connected symplectic 4-manifold, up to smooth isotopy, how many connected smoothly embedded symplectic submanifolds represent K? We show that when K can be represented by a symplectic torus, there a…

The paper classifies all tight contact structures on a solid torus.
I construct "fake algebraic curves" in . More precisely, for any k>2, I construct infinitely many pairwise smoothly non-isotopic (and moreover not ambient diffeomorphic) smooth surfaces homeomorphic to a non-singular algebraic curve of degree 2k, realizing the same homology class as such a curve a…
The paper introduces an inequality to detect when surfaces in 4-manifolds are not smoothly isotopic.
In this paper we present the Braid Monodromy Type (BMT) of curves and surfaces; past, present and future. The BMT is an invariant that can distinguish between non-isotopic curves; between different families of surfaces of general type; between connected components of moduli space of surfaces and between non symplectmor…
Bridge trisections and knotted surfaces connected via tri-plane diagrams.
We expect manifolds obtained by Dehn filling to inherit properties from the knot manifold. To what extent does that hold true for the Heegaard structure? We study four changes to the Heegaard structure that may occur after filling: (1) Heegaard genus decreases, (2) a new Heegaard surface is created, (3) a non-stabilize…
A \textit{multicurve} $\C$ on a closed orientable surface is defined to be a finite collection of disjoint non-isotopic essential simple closed curves. The Dehn twist $t_{\C}$ about $\C$ is the product of the Dehn twists about the individual curves. In this paper, we give necessary and sufficient conditions for the exi…
New findings show that some knotted surfaces remain distinct even after many stabilizations.
Let M_1 and M_2 be closed, orientable 3-manifolds. Let H_i denote a Heegaard surface in M_i. We prove that if H_1 # H_2 comes from stabilizing a lower genus splitting of M_1 # M_2 then either H_1 or H_2 comes from stabilizing a lower genus splitting. If H_i and G_i are non-isotopic Heegaard surfaces in M_i, and H_i is …

The paper finds non-isotopic exact Lagrangians in symplectic manifolds with -actions.
Let be a collection of pairwise non-isotopic simple closed curves on the closed, orientable, genus surface , such that and intersect exactly once for . It was recently demonstrated by Malestein, Rivin, and Theran that the cardinality of such a collection is no mo…
A regular circle-valued Morse function on the knot complement C(K) = S^3\K is a function f from C(K) to S^1 which separates critical points and which behaves nicely in a neighborhood of the knot. Such a function induces a handle decomposition on the knot exterior E(K) = S^3\N (K), with the property that every regular l…

Here we discuss an example of topologically isotopic but smoothly non-isotopic pair of 2-spheres in a simply connected 4-manifold, which become smoothly isotopic after stabilizing by connected summing with S^2 x S^2.
In this paper, we construct the first families of distinct Lagrangian ribbon disks in the standard symplectic 4-ball which have the same boundary Legendrian knots, and are not smoothly isotopic or have non-homeomorphic exteriors.
