16 results for m-sphere

We construct homotopically non-trivial maps from the unit m-sphere to the unit (m-1)-sphere with arbitrarily small k-dilation for each k greater than (m + 1)/2. We prove that homotopically non-trivial maps from the unit m-sphere to the unit (m-1)-sphere cannot have arbitrarily small k-dilation for k less than or equal …

The group SL(n,Z) admits a smooth faithful action on the (n-1)-sphere S^(n-1), induced from its linear action on euclidean space R^n. We show that, if m < n-1 and n > 2, any smooth action of SL(n,Z) on a mod 2 homology m-sphere, and in particular on the m-sphere S^m, is trivial.

On a Riemannian manifold Mˉm+n\bar{M}^{m+n} with an (m+1)(m+1)-calibration ΩΩ, we prove that an mm-submanifold MM with constant mean curvature HH and calibrated extended tangent space RHTM\mathbb{R}H\oplus TM is a critical point of the area functional for variations that preserve the enclosed ΩΩ-volume. This recovers the …

The symplectic group Sp(2g,Z) is a subgroup of the linear group SL(2g,Z) and admits a faithful action on the sphere S^(2g-1), induced from its linear action on Euclidean space R^(2g). Generalizing corresponding results for linear groups, we show that, if m < 2g-1 and g > 2, any continuous action of Sp(2g,Z) on a homolo…

Study on prescribing mean curvature for S2S^2 to R3\mathbb{R}^3 using spinor fields.

problem Prescribing mean curvature for S2S^2 to R3\mathbb{R}^3.
method Variational methods and spinorial Weierstraß representation.
result Solutions to the spinor field equation on S2S^2.

The paper shows how to create manifolds with no geodesics converging to a sphere.

problem Creating manifolds with specific geometric properties.
method Constructing a sequence of Riemannian manifolds converging to a unit sphere in intrinsic flat sense.
result The resulting limit space has no geodesics achieving distances between points.

Let X=G/KX=G/K be a symmetric space of noncompact type and rank k2k\ge 2. We prove that horospheres in XX are Lipschitz (k2)(k-2)--connected if their centers are not contained in a proper join factor of the spherical building of XX at infinity. As a consequence, the distortion dimension of an irreducible Q\mathbb{Q}--ran…

Fix an integer m and a multi-index p = (p_1, ..., p_r) of integers p_i < m-2. The set of links of codimension > 2, with multi-index p, E(p, m), is the set of smooth isotopy classes of smooth embeddings of the disjoint union of the p_i-spheres into the m-sphere. Haefliger showed that E(p, m) is a finitely generated abel…

Estimates isoperimetric profiles in product manifolds with varying volumes.

problem Estimating isoperimetric profiles in product manifolds with different volumes.
method Analyzes a one-parameter family of product manifolds and uses volume and isoperimetric profiles of constituent manifolds.
result Shows bounds on isoperimetric profiles for large parameter values, revealing specific regions as isoperimetric.

Let m>1 and n>1 be any pair of integers. In this paper we prove that if H is between the numbers \cot(\fracπ{m}) and b_{m,n}=\frac{(m^2-2)\sqrt{n-1}}{n\sqrt{m^2-1}}, then, there exists a non isoparametric, compact embedded hypersurface in S^{n+1} with constant mean curvature H that admits the group O(n)x Z_m in their g…
