48 results for isotopy invariant

This paper introduces two virtual knot theory ``analogues'' of a well-known family of invariants for knots in thickened surfaces: the Grishanov-Vassiliev finite-type invariants of order two. The first, called the three loop isotopy invariant, is an invariant of virtual knots while the second, called the three loop fram…

Constructs pseudo-isotopies with Cerf diagrams and Hatcher-Wagoner invariants for barbell maps.

problem Understanding and constructing pseudo-isotopies for barbell maps.
method Constructs specific pseudo-isotopies with Cerf diagrams and Hatcher-Wagoner invariants.
result Every pseudo-isotopy with vanishing first Hatcher-Wagoner invariant can be isotoped to a composition of standard barbell pseudo-isotopies.

In part I it was shown that for each k>0 the generalized Sato-Levine invariant detects a gap between k-quasi-isotopy of link and peripheral structure preserving isomorphism of the finest quotient G_k of its fundamental group, `functorially' invariant under k-quasi-isotopy. Here we show that Cochran's derived invariant …

New invariant distinguishes Legendrian surfaces in 5-manifolds.

problem Distinguishing Legendrian surfaces in closed contact 5-manifolds.
method Introduced a new Legendrian isotopy invariant, MPX(L)M\mathcal{P}_{X}(L), and extended it to an absolute invariant.
result New invariant distinguishes surfaces not distinguishable by Thurston-Bennequin invariant.

We define new Hamiltonian isotopy invariants for a monotone Lagrangian torus embedded in a symplectic 4-manifold. We show that, in the standard symplectic 4-space, these invariants distinguish a monotone Clifford torus from a Chekanov torus.

A star-like isotopy for oriented links in 3-space is an isotopy which uses only Reidemeister II moves with opposite orientations and Reidemeister III moves with alternating orientations when checking the strands clockwise (or anticlockwise). We define a link polynomial derived from the Jones polynomial which is, in gen…

It has long been known that a Milnor invariant with no repeated index is an invariant of link homotopy. We show that Milnor's invariants with repeated indices are invariants not only of isotopy, but also of self C_k-moves. A self C_k-move is a natural generalization of link homotopy based on certain degree k clasper su…

It is well-known that no knot can be cancelled in a connected sum with another knot, whereas every link can be cancelled up to link homotopy in a (componentwise) connected sum with another link. In this paper we address the question whether the noncancellation property of knots holds for some (piecewise-linear) links u…

method Introducing new Gauss diagram formulas for flat vertex isotopy classes of spatial 2-bouquet graphs.
result First simple example of a Gauss diagram formula for spatial 2-bouquet graphs.

Geometric aspects of the filtration on classical links by k-quasi-isotopy are discussed, including the effect of Whitehead doubling, relations with Smythe's n-splitting and Kobayashi's k-contractibility. One observation is: ω-quasi-isotopy is equivalent to PL isotopy for links in a homotopy 3-sphere (resp. contractible…

David Gabai recently proved a smooth 4-dimensional "Light Bulb Theorem" in the absence of 2-torsion in the fundamental group. We extend his result to 4-manifolds with arbitrary fundamental group by showing that an invariant of Mike Freedman and Frank Quinn gives the complete obstruction to "homotopy implies isotopy" fo…

We call two Engel structures isotopic if they are homotopic through Engel structures by a homotopy that fixes the characteristic line field. In the present paper we define an isotopy invariant of Engel structures on oriented circle bundles over closed oriented three-manifolds and apply it to give an isotopy classificat…

This paper investigates dynamics that persist under isotopy in classes of orientation-preserving homeomorphisms of orientable surfaces. The persistence of periodic points with respect to periodic and strong Nielsen equivalence is studied. The existence of a dynamically minimal representative with respect to these relat…

This paper investigates the equivalence between Yamada polynomial and Jones polynomial of associated links for brunnian θ-curves.

problem Understanding the relationship between Yamada polynomial and Jones polynomial for θ-curves.
method Investigates the equivalence between the normalized Yamada polynomial of θ-curves and the Jones polynomial of their associated links.
result Shows that the two polynomials are equivalent for brunnian θ-curves.

Khovanov and Rozansky's categorification of the HOMFLY-PT polynomial is invariant under braidlike isotopies for any link diagram and Markov moves for braid closures. To define HOMFLY-PT homology, they required a link to be presented as a braid closure, because they did not prove invariance under the other oriented Reid…

We define an isotopy invariant of embeddings N -> R^m of manifolds into Euclidean space. This invariant together with the α-invariant of Haefliger-Wu is complete in the dimension range where the α-invariant could be incomplete. method Using an invariant going back to Dax, constructing a group structure, and relating to mapping class groups.

Contact homology for Legendrian submanifolds in standard contact (2n+1)(2n+1)-space is rigorously defined using moduli spaces of holomorphic disks with Lagrangian boundary conditions in complex nn-space. It provides new invariants of Legendrian isotopy. Using these invariants the theory of Legendrian isotopy is shown to b…

Kauffman's bracket is an invariant of regular isotopy of knots and links which since its discovery in 1985 it has been used in many different directions: (a) it implies an easy proof of the invariance of (in fact, it is equivalent to) the Jones polynomial; (b) it is the basic ingredient in a completely combinatorial co…
