48 results for group-theoretic properties

In this paper we develop some group theoretical methods which are shown to be very useful for a better understanding of the properties of the Riccati equation and we discuss some of its integrability conditions from a group theoretical perspective. The nonlinear superposition principle also arises in a simple way.

Every closed orientable surface S has the following property: any two connected covers of S of the same degree are homeomorphic (as spaces). In this, paper we give a complete classification of compact 3-manifolds with empty or toroidal boundary which have the above property. We also discuss related group-theoretic ques…

This paper shows that, away from 6, the kernel of the Witten genus is precisely the ideal consisting of (bordism classes of) Cayley plane bundles with connected structure group, but only after restricting the Witten genus to string bordism. It does so by showing that the divisibility properties of Cayley plane bundle c…

We prove that an irreducible 3-manifold whose fundamental group satisfies a certain group-theoretic property called RFRS is virtually fibered. As a corollary, we show that 3-dimensional reflection orbifolds and arithmetic hyperbolic orbifolds defined by a quadratic form virtually fiber. These include the Seifert Weber …

Artin groups of finite type are not as well understood as braid groups. This is due to the additional geometric properties of braid groups coming from their close connection to mapping class groups. For each Artin group of finite type, we construct a space (simplicial complex) analogous to Teichmueller space that satis…

We study aspherical manifolds that do not support Anosov diffeomorphisms. The results of Culler and Shalen for 2,3 or 4-free hyperbolic 3-manifolds are contingent on properties specific to and special about rank two subgroups of a free group. Here we determine what construction and algebraic information is required in order to make a geometric statement about MM, a closed, orientable hyperb…

The postulate of independence of cause and mechanism (ICM) has recently led to several new causal discovery algorithms. The interpretation of independence and the way it is utilized, however, varies across these methods. Our aim in this paper is to propose a group theoretic framework for ICM to unify and generalize the…

We show that a certain geometric property, the QSF introduced by S. Brick and M. Mihalik, is universally true for {\ibf all} finitely presented groups ΓΓ. A group theoretic version of Dehn surgery is studied. We show that the stable commutator length vanishes for certain groups defined as infinite unions of smaller groups. The argument uses a group-theoretic analogue of the Mazur swindle, and goes back to the works of Anderson, Fisher, and Mather on homeomorphism groups.

In 2004, Sormani and Wei introduced the covering spectrum: a geometric invariant that isolates part of the length spectrum of a Riemannian manifold.
