We find coordinates, the metric tensor, the inverse metric tensor and the Laplace-Beltrami operator for the orbit space of Hamiltonian SU(2) gauge theory on a finite, rectangular lattice. This is done using a complete axial gauge fixing. The Gribov problem can be completely solved, with no remaining gauge ambiguities.

The natural partial ordering of the orbit types of the action of the group of local gauge transformations on the space of connections in space-time dimension d<=4 is investigated. For that purpose, a description of orbit types in terms of cohomology elements of space-time, derived earlier, is used. It is shown that, on…

The gauge principle is at the heart of a good part of fundamental physics: Starting with a group G of so-called rigid symmetries of a functional defined over space-time Sigma, the original functional is extended appropriately by additional Lie(G)-valued 1-form gauge fields so as to lift the symmetry to Maps(Sigma,G). P…

We survey several mathematical developments in the holonomy approach to gauge theory. Wilson lines in gauge theories admit several path integral descriptions. The first one (due to Alekseev-Faddeev-Shatashvili) uses path integrals over coadjoint orbits. The second one (due to Diakonov-Petrov) replaces a 1-dimensional path integral with a 2-dimensional topological σσ-model. We show that this σσ-model i…
