48 results for flat knots

The classical knot groups are the fundamental groups of the complements of smooth or piecewise-linear (PL) locally-flat knots. For PL knots that are not locally-flat, there is a pair of interesting groups to study: the fundamental group of the knot complement and that of the complement of the ``boundary knot'' that occ…

Knotted ribbons form an important topic in knot theory. They have applications in natural sciences, such as cyclic duplex DNA modeling. A flat knotted ribbon can be obtained by gently pulling a knotted ribbon tight so that it becomes flat and folded. An important problem in knot theory is to study the minimal ratio of …

A new type of knot energy is presented via real life experiments involving a thin resilient metallic tube. Knotted in different ways, the device mechanically acquires a uniquely determined (up to isometry) normal form at least when the original knot diagram has a small number of crossings, thus outperforming the famous…

We generalize the classical study of Alexander polynomials of smooth or PL locally-flat knots to PL knots that are not necessarily locally-flat. We introduce three families of generalized Alexander polynomials and study their properties. For knots with point singularities, we obtain a classification of these polynomial…

We construct two knot invariants. The first knot invariant is a sum constructed using linking numbers. The second is an invariant of flat knots and is a formal sum of flat knots obtained by smoothing pairs of crossings. This invariant can be used in conjunction with other flat invariants, forming a family of invariants…

We introduce an algebraic structure we call semiquandles whose axioms are derived from flat Reidemeister moves. Finite semiquandles have associated counting invariants and enhanced invariants defined for flat virtual knots and links. We also introduce singular semiquandles and virtual singular semiquandles which define…

Virtual knot theory, introduced by Kauffman, is a generalization of classical knot theory of interest because its finite-type invariant theory is potentially a topological interpretation of Etingof and Kazhdan's theory of quantization of Lie bi-algebras. Classical knots inject into virtual knots, and flat virtual knots…

In this paper, we discuss filamentations on oriented chord diagrams. When a filamentation cannot be realized on an oriented chord diagram, then the corresponding flat virtual knot is non-trivial. If a flat knot diagram is non-trivial, then any virtual diagram whose shadow is the flat diagram must also be non-trivial. W…

We study "flat knot types" of geodesics on compact surfaces M^2. For every flat knot type and any Riemannian metric g we introduce a Conley index associated with the curve shortening flow on the space of immersed curves on M^2. We conclude existence of closed geodesics with prescribed flat knot types, provided the asso…

This paper gives mathematical models for flat knotted ribbons, and makes specific conjectures for the least length of ribbon (for a given width) needed to tie the trefoil knot and the figure eight knot. Prime knots of genus one admitting diagram with at most five classical crossings were classified by Akimova and Matveev in 2014. In 2018 Kaur, Prabhakar and Vesnin introduced families of L-polynomials and F-polynomials for virtual knots which are generalizations of affine index polynomial. Here we introduce a notion of…

We will discuss a method for visual presentation of knotted surfaces in the four space, by examining a number and a position of its Morse's critical points. We show that there exist non-trivial piecewise-linear (PL) knots with isolated singularities Sn2SnS^{n-2}\subset S^n, n5n\geq 5, whose complements have the homotopy type of a circle. In 2002, D. Hrencecin and L.H. Kauffman defined a filamentation invariant on oriented chord diagrams that may determine whether the corresponding flat virtual knot diagrams are non-trivial.
