The stabilisation height of a fibre surface in the 3-sphere is the minimal number of Hopf plumbing operations needed to attain a stable fibre surface from the initial surface. We show that families of fibre surfaces related by iterated Stallings twists have unbounded stabilisation height.

Let M denote the total space of a Lefschetz fibration, obtained by blowing up a Lefschetz pencil on an algebraic surface. We consider the n-fold fibre sum M(n), generalizing the construction of the elliptic surfaces E(n). For a Lefschetz pencil on a simply-connected minimal surface of general type we partially calculat…

This article finds constant scalar curvature Kahler metrics on certain compact complex surfaces. The surfaces considered are those admitting a holomorphic submersion to a curve, with fibres of genus at least 2. The proof is via an adiabatic limit. We study the symplectic topology of some finite algebraic quotients of the An Milnor fibre which are diffeomorphic to the rational homology balls that appear in Fintushel and Stern's rational blowdown construction. A bundle with base BB and fibre FF aspherical closed surfaces has a section if and only if the action :π1(B)Out(π1(F)):π_1(B)\to{Out}(π_1(F)) factors through Aut(π1(F))Aut(π_1(F)) and a cohomology class is 0. We simplify and make more explicit the latter condition. We also show that the transgression d2,02d^2_{2,0} in the homology LHS spectr…

We consider some classical fibre bundles furnished with almost complex structures of twistor type, deduce their integrability in some cases and study \textit{self-holomorphic} sections of a \textit{symplectic} twistor space. It is shown that there exist non-singular cubic surfaces in CP^3 containing 5 twistor lines. This is the maximum number of twistor fibres that a non-singular cubic can contain. Cubic surfaces in CP^3 with 5 twistor lines are classified up to transformations preserving the conformal structure of S^4.

This is a PhD thesis in low-dimensional topology. Its main purpose is to examine so-called tête-à-tête twists. Whereas the well-known Dehn twists are twists around a simple closed curve, tête-à…
