The paper finds minimum Steklov eigenvalues on combinatorial graphs.
Otsuki tori form a countable family of immersed minimal two-dimensional tori in the unitary three-dimensional sphere. According to El Soufi-Ilias theorem, the metrics on the Otsuki tori are extremal for some unknown eigenvalues of the Laplace-Beltrami operator. Despite the fact that the Otsuki tori are defined in quite…
Eigenvalue problem for Kähler metrics on compact manifolds.
We prove that in many cases the existence of an extremal metric for some Laplace eigenvalue in a conformal class allows to find extremal metrics in conformal classes close by. As a consequence and as part of the arguments we obtain perturbed harmonic maps with constant density.
Extremal spectral properties of the Lawson tori are studied. A Lawson torus carries an extremal metric for some eigenvalue of the Laplace-Beltrami operator. The main result of this paper is that the number of this eigenvalue is expressed in terms of fundamental tones of auxiliary periodic Sturm-Liouville problems.
Extremal spectral properties of Lawson tau-surfaces are investigated. The Lawson tau-surfaces form a two-parametric family of tori or Klein bottles minimally immersed in the standard unitary three-dimensional sphere. A Lawson tau-surface carries an extremal metric for some eigenvalue of the Laplace-Beltrami operator. U…
The first eigenvalue of the Laplacian on a surface can be viewed as a functional on the space of Riemannian metrics of a given area. Critical points of this functional are called extremal metrics. The only known extremal metrics are a round sphere, a standard projective plane, a Clifford torus and an equilateral torus.…
Study eigenvalues of conformal Laplacian under Sire-Xu normalization.
This article provides a new toolbox to derive sparse recovery guarantees from small deviations on extreme singular values or extreme eigenvalues obtained in Random Matrix Theory. This work is based on Restricted Isometry Constants (RICs) which are a pivotal notion in Compressed Sensing and High-Dimensional Statistics a…
We study Laplace eigenvalues on Kähler manifolds as functionals on the space of Kähler metrics with cohomologous Kähler forms. We introduce a natural notion of a -extremal Kähler metric and obtain necessary and sufficient conditions for it. A particular attention is paid to the -extremal properties of K…
The i-th eigenvalue of the Laplacian on a surface can be viewed as a functional on the space of Riemannian metrics of fixed area. Extremal points of these functionals correspond to surfaces admitting minimal isometric immersions into spheres. Recently, critical metrics for the first eigenvalue were classified on tori a…
In this short note, we prove that conformal classes which are small perturbations of a product conformal class on a product with a standard sphere admit a metric extremal for some Laplace eigenvalue. As part of the arguments we obtain perturbed harmonic maps with constant density.
We prove the existence of extremal domains with small prescribed volume for the first eigenvalue of the Laplace-Beltrami operator in any compact Riemannian manifold. This result generalizes a results of F. Pacard and the second author where the existence of a nondegenerate critical point of the scalar curvature of the …
Numerical methods solve Steklov eigenvalue problems to generate free boundary minimal surfaces.
We prove an Hersch's type isoperimetric inequality for the third positive eigenvalue on . Our method builds on the theory we developped to construct extremal metrics on Riemannian surfaces in conformal classes for any eigenvalue.
We build new examples of extremal domains with small prescribed volume for the first eigenvalue of the Laplace-Beltrami operator in some Riemannian manifold with boundary. These domains are close to half balls of small radius centered at a nondegenerate critical point of the mean curvature function of the boundary of t…
The paper constructs free boundary minimal surfaces in product spaces using eigenvalue methods.
We generalise a theorem of Engman and Abreu--Freitas on the first invariant eigenvalue of non-negatively curved -invariant metrics on to general toric Kähler metrics with non-negative scalar curvature. In particular, a simple upper bound of the first non-zero invariant eigenvalue for such metri…
In this letter, two explicit self-similar solutions to a graph representation of time-like extremal hypersurfaces in Minkowski spacetime are given. Meanwhile, there is an untable eigenvalue in the linearized time-like extremal hypersurfaces equation around two explicit self-similar solutions.
El Soufi-Ilias' theorem establishes a connection between minimal submanifolds of spheres and extremal metrics for eigenvalues of the Laplace-Beltrami operator. Recently, this connection was used to provide several explicit examples of extremal metrics. We investigate the maximality of these metrics and prove that all o…
Study on metrics maximizing eigenvalues of Paneitz operator on 4-manifolds.
We study the problem of detecting an abrupt change to the signal covariance matrix. In particular, the covariance changes from a "white" identity matrix to an unknown spiked or low-rank matrix. Two sequential change-point detection procedures are presented, based on the largest and the smallest eigenvalues of the sampl…
Geometric framework for SPD matrices preserving subspace structures.
Discrete analogues of classical spectral geometric inequalities and extremal eigenvalue problems on graphs.
We study the existence and properties of metrics maximising the first Laplace eigenvalue among conformal metrics of unit volume on Riemannian surfaces. We describe a general approach to this problem and its higher eigenvalue versions via the direct method of calculus of variations. The principal results include the gen…
We show that metrics that maximize the k-th Steklov eigenvalue on surfaces with boundary arise from free boundary minimal surfaces in the unit ball. We prove several properties of the volumes of these minimal submanifolds. For free boundary minimal submanifolds in the ball we show that the boundary volume is reduced up…
We prove that the round metric on the sphere has the largest first eigenvalue of the Dirac operator among all metrics that are larger than it. As a corollary, this gives an alternative proof of an extremality result for scalar curvature due to M. Llarull.
Method identifies causal interactions between time series using extreme eigenvalue variability.
New scalable geometric framework for SPD matrices.
Using Takahashi theorem we propose an approach to extend known families of minimal tori in spheres. As an example, the well-known two-parametric family of Lawson tau-surfaces including tori and Klein bottles is extended to a three-parametric family of tori and Klein bottles minimally immersed in spheres. Extremal spect…
The -th eigenvalue of the Laplace-Beltrami operator on a surface can be considered as a functional on the space of all Riemannian metrics of unit volume on this surface. Surprisingly only few examples of extremal metrics for these functionals are known. In the present paper a new countable family of extremal m…
Study finds conditions for Kähler-Einstein metrics on flag manifolds.
We develop new algorithms for approximating extremal toric Kähler metrics. We focus on an extremal metric on , which is conformal to an Einstein metric (the Chen-LeBrun-Weber metric). We compare our approximation to one given by Bunch and Donaldson and compute various g…
We prove the existence of extremal domains for the first eigenvalue of the Laplace-Beltrami operator in some compact Riemannian manifolds of dimension , with volume close to the volume of the manifold. If the first (positive) eigenfunction of the Laplace-Beltrami operator over the manifold is a nonconst…
The paper examines geometric properties of domains for the p-Laplacian in Euclidean and hyperbolic spaces.
The present paper is devoted to geometric optimization problems related to the Neumann eigenvalue problem for the Laplace-Beltrami operator on bounded subdomains of a Riemannian manifold . More precisely, we analyze locally extremal domains for the first nontrivial eigenvalue with respect …
Extreme classification problems are multiclass and multilabel classification problems where the number of outputs is so large that straightforward strategies are neither statistically nor computationally viable. One strategy for dealing with the computational burden is via a tree decomposition of the output space. Whil…
The normalized eigenvalues of the Laplace-Beltrami operator can be considered as functionals on the space of all Riemannian metrics on a fixed surface . In recent papers several explicit examples of extremal metrics were provided. These metrics are induced by minimal immersions of surfaces in $\mathbb…
We consider deformations of metrics in a given conformal class such that the smallest eigenvalue of the Ricci tensor to be a constant. It is related to the notion of minimal volumes in comparison geometry. Such a metric with the smallest eigenvalue of the Ricci tensor to be a constant is an extremal metric of volume in…
The paper calculates critical configurations and Morse indices for polygons on circles or ellipses.
We give bounds on the first non-zero eigenvalue of the scalar Laplacian for both the Page and the Chen-LeBrun-Weber Einstein metrics. One notable feature is that these bounds are obtained without explicit knowledge of the metrics or numerical approximation to them. Our method also allows the calculation of the invarian…
In this paper, we show that the convex domains of the hyperbolic space which are almost extremal for the Faber-Krahn or the Payne-Polya-Weinberger inequalities are close to geodesic balls. Our proof is also valid in other space forms and allows us to recover known results in Euclidean space and on the sphere.
New GMM models fit high-dimensional data with fewer parameters.
In a seminal paper published in 1980, P. C. Yang and S.-T. Yau proved an inequality bounding the first eigenvalue of the Laplacian on an orientable Riemannian surface in terms of its genus and the area. The equality in Yang-Yau's estimate is attained for by an old result of J. Hersch and it was recently shown…
