48 results for do Carmo's question

We are interested in the impact of entropies on the geometry of a hypersurface of a Riemannian manifold. In fact, we will be able to compare the volume entropy of a hypersurface with that of the ambient manifold, provided some geometric assumption are satisfied. This depends on the existence of an embedded tube around …

No regular algebraic hypersurfaces with non-zero constant mean curvature in Euclidean spaces are found.

problem Existence of regular algebraic hypersurfaces with non-zero constant mean curvature in Euclidean spaces.
method Analyzing polynomials defining hypersurfaces of various degrees and shapes.
result Hyperspheres and round cylinders are the only such hypersurfaces defined by polynomials of degree ≤3.

We discuss holomorphic isometric embeddings of the projective line into quadrics using a generalisation of the theorem of do Carmo--Wallach to provide a description of their moduli spaces up to image and gauge--equivalence. Moreover, we show rigidity of the real standard map from the projective line into quadrics.

It is shown that the equation which describes constant mean curvature surface via the generalized Weierstrass-Enneper inducing has Hamiltonian form. Its simplest finite-dimensional reduction has two degrees of freedom, integrable and its trajectories correspond to well-known Delaunay and do Carmo-Dajzcer surfaces (i.e.…

Sharp Sobolev inequalities proved on manifolds with non-negative Ricci curvature.

problem Proving sharp Sobolev inequalities on noncompact Riemannian manifolds with non-negative Ricci curvature.
method Using Optimal Mass Transportation with quadratic distance cost.
result Sharp LpL^p-Sobolev and LpL^p-logarithmic Sobolev inequalities established for p>1p>1 and p=1p=1.

We construct, for any ``good'' Cantor set FF of Sn1S^{n-1}, an immersion of the sphere SnS^n with set of points of zero Gauss-Kronecker curvature equal to F×D1F\times D^{1}, where D1D^{1} is the 1-dimensional disk. In particular these examples show that the theorem of Matheus-Oliveira strictly extends two results by do C…

Study on uniqueness of hypersurfaces in hyperbolic space with constant mean curvature.

problem Uniqueness of hypersurfaces with constant higher order mean curvature in hyperbolic space.
method Generalization of Bernstein theorem and proof of Bernstein type results for immersed hypersurfaces.
result Rigidity of horospheres and equidistant spheres in terms of their higher order mean curvatures.

Inspired by the Finn-Osserman (1964), Chern (1969), do Carmo-Peng (1979) proofs of the Bernstein theorem, which characterizes flat planes as the only entire minimal graphs, we prove a new rigidity theorem for associate families connecting the doubly periodic Scherk graphs and the singly periodic Scherk towers. Our char…

Study on metrics of surfaces with curvature and boundary conditions.

problem Understanding metrics of surfaces with curvature and boundary conditions.
method Revisits and generalizes Ricci-Curbastro's theorem to constant mean curvature surfaces and minimal hypersurfaces.
result New versions of Ricci-Curbastro's theorem for surfaces with curvature and boundary conditions.

A harmonic map from a Riemannian manifold into a Grassmannian manifold is characterized by a vector bundle, a space of sections of this bundle and a Laplace operator. We apply our main theorem, itself a generalization of a Theorem of Takahashi, to generalize the theory of do Carmo and Wallach and to describe the moduli…

In this paper, for an immersion ff of an nn-dimensional Riemannian manifold MM into (n+d)(n+d)-Euclidean space we give a sufficient condition on ff so that, in case d5d\leq 5, any immersion gg of MM into (n+d+1)(n+d+1)-Euclidean space that induces on MM a metric that is conformal to the metric induced by ff is locally …

On a Riemannian manifold Mˉm+n\bar{M}^{m+n} with an (m+1)(m+1)-calibration ΩΩ, we prove that an mm-submanifold MM with constant mean curvature HH and calibrated extended tangent space RHTM\mathbb{R}H\oplus TM is a critical point of the area functional for variations that preserve the enclosed ΩΩ-volume. This recovers the …

Estimates area and spectrum of stable minimal surfaces in Euclidean and hyperbolic spaces.

problem Estimating the growth of area and spectrum of stable minimal surfaces.
method Elementary argument and stability inequality for Euclidean space; explicit area growth estimate for hyperbolic space; scalar curvature lower bound for spectrum.
result Minimal surfaces in Euclidean space grow like the Euclidean plane, and in hyperbolic space, explicit area growth estimates are derived.

We introduce a class of minimal submanfolds MnM^n, n3n\geq 3, in spheres Sn+2\mathbb{S}^{n+2} that are ruled by totally geodesic spheres of dimension n2n-2. If simply-connected, such a submanifold admits a one-parameter associated family of equally ruled minimal isometric deformations that are genuine. As for compact exa…

We show that the index of a constant mean curvature 1 surface in hyperbolic 3-space is completely determined by the compact Riemann surface and secondary Gauss map that represent it in Bryant's Weierstrass representation. We give three applications of this observation. Firstly, it allows us to explicitly compute the in…
