A generic smooth map of a closed 2k2k-manifold into (3k1)(3k-1)-space has a finite number of cusps (Σ1,1Σ^{1,1}-singularities). We determine the possible numbers of cusps of such maps. A fold map is a map with singular set consisting of only fold singularities (Σ1,0Σ^{1,0}-singularities). Two fold maps are fold bordant if the…

The cobordism invariance of the index on closed manifolds is reproved using the calculus of cusp pseudodifferential operators on a manifold with boundary. More generally, on a compact manifold with corners, the existence of a symmetric cusp differential operator of order 1 and of Dirac type near the boundary implies th…

In this note we use Heegaard Floer homology to study smooth cobordisms of algebraic knots and complex deformations of cusp singularities of curves. The main tool will be the concordance invariant ν+ν^+: we study its behaviour with respect to connected sums, providing an explicit formula in the case of L-space knots and…

An analytic index is defined for a family of cusp pseudodifferential operators, Pb,P_b, on a fibration with fibres which are compact manifolds with boundaries, provided the family is elliptic and has invertible indicial family at the boundary. In fact there is always a perturbation QbQ_b by a family of cusp operators of…

Cobordism groups of cooriented fold maps of codimension 1 are computed completely. Namely their odd torsion part coincides with that of the stable homotopy group of spheres in the same dimension, while the 2-primary part is the kernel of the Kahn-Priddy map. (The Kahn-Priddy map is an epimorhism of the stable homotopy …

We conjecture a formula for the virtual elliptic genera of moduli spaces of rank 2 sheaves on minimal surfaces SS of general type. We express our conjecture in terms of the Igusa cusp form χ10χ_{10} and Borcherds type lifts of three quasi-Jacobi forms which are all related to the Weierstrass elliptic function. We also …

Cobordism invariance shows that the index, in K-theory, of a family of pseudodifferential operators on the boundary of a fibration vanishes if the symbol family extends to be elliptic across the whole fibration. For Dirac operators with spectral boundary condition, Dai and Freed \cite{dai-freed1} gave an explicit versi…

We find that cusp densities of hyperbolic knots in the 3-sphere are dense in [0,0.6826...] and those of links are dense in [0,0.853...]. We define a new invariant associated with cusp volume, the cusp crossing density, as the ratio between the cusp volume and the crossing number of a link, and show that cusp crossing d…
