48 results for curves of maximal slope

We show for an alternating knot the minimal boundary slope of an essential spanning surface is given by the signature plus twice the minimum degree of the Jones polynomial and the maximal boundary slope of an essential spanning surface is given by the signature plus twice the maximum degree of the Jones polynomial. For…

Using the Hatcher-Oertel algorithm for finding boundary slopes of Montesinos knots, we prove the Slope Conjecture and the Strong Slope Conjecture for a family of 3-tangle pretzel knots. More precisely, we prove that the maximal degrees of the colored Jones polynomial of such knots determine a boundary slope as predicte…

Investment strategies derived from commodity futures curves exploit dynamics in price movements.

problem Modeling and predicting the term structure of commodity futures prices.
method Employed the Nelson-Siegel framework to model term structure, and developed investment strategies based on changes in slope and curvature parameters.
result Significant profits generated from systematic strategies based on the change in slope, unrelated to risk factors and robust to transaction costs.

We consider a curvature flow V=HV=H in the band domain Ω:=[1,1]×RΩ:=[-1,1]\times \R, where, for a graphic curve ΓtΓ_t, VV denotes its normal velocity and HH denotes its curvature. If ΓtΓ_t contacts the two boundaries ±Ω\partial_\pm Ω of ΩΩ with constant slopes, in 1993, Altschular and Wu \cite{AW1} proved that ΓtΓ_t converge…

In this paper, two lower bounds on the diameters of the boundary slope sets are given for Montesinos knots. One is described in terms of the minimal crossing numbers of the knots, and the other is related to the Euler characteristics of essential surfaces with the maximal/minimal boundary slopes.

Let X be a norm curve in the SL(2,C)-character variety of a knot exterior M. Let t = || b || / || a || be the ratio of the Culler-Shalen norms of two distinct non-zero classes a, b in H_1(\partial M, Z). We demonstrate that either X has exactly two associated strict boundary slopes \pm t, or else there are strict bound…

In particular, we assign a tropical curve to every knot which is determined by the Jones polynomial of the knot and its parallels. The topical curve explains the relation between the AJ Con…

We prove that polarised manifolds that admit a constant scalar curvature Kähler (cscK) metric satisfy a condition we call slope semistability. That is, we define the slope μμ for a projective manifold and for each of its subschemes, and show that if XX is cscK then μ(Z)μ(X)μ(Z)\leμ(X) for all subschemes ZZ. This gives man…

method Use Thurston norm and Dehn filling slope length to determine stretch laminations as unions of core curves.
result Show existence of infinitely many examples with fibration and only closed leaves.

If a hyperbolic 3-manifold admits an exceptional Dehn filling, then the length of the slope of that Dehn filling is known to be at most six. However, the bound of six appears to be sharp only in the toroidal case. In this paper, we investigate slope lengths of other exceptional fillings. We construct hyperbolic 3-manif…

Being inspired by Ross' construction of unstable products of certain smooth curves, we show that the product C×CC\times C of every smooth curve CC of genus at least 2 is not slope semistable with respect to certain polarisations. Besides, we produce examples of Kodaira-fibred surfaces of nonzero signature, which are no…

We show that, for any given 3-manifold M, there are at most finitely many hyperbolic knots K in the 3-sphere and fractions p/q (with q > 22), such that M is obtained by p/q surgery along K. This is a corollary of the following result. If M is obtained by Dehn filling the cusps of a hyperbolic 3-manifold X, where each f…

The envelope of straight lines affine normal to a plane curve C is its affine evolute; the envelope of the affine lines tangent to C is the original curve, together with the entire affine tangent line at each inflexion of C. In this paper, we consider plane curves without inflexions. We use some techniques of singulari…

We prove two conjectures of C. Gordon. We show that the maximal number of exceptional Dehn surgeries on a 1-cusped hyperbolic 3-manifold is 10, and that the maximal intersection number between exceptional slopes is 8. The proof uses a combination of new geometric techniques and a rigorous computer-assisted calculation.
