We describe an elementary combinatorial move on the set of quadratic differentials with a horizontal one cylinder decom-position. Computer experiment suggests that the corresponding equivalent classes are in one-to-one correspondence with the con-nected component of the strata.

End-to-end trainable graph matching using improved combinatorial solvers.
The hyperbolic structure of equilateral pentagons is mapped to a tiling of the hyperbolic plane.
We study the moduli space of euclidean structures with cone points on a surface, and describe a decomposition into cells each of which corresponds to a given combinatorial type of Delaunay tessellation. We use some of the ideas to study hyperbolic structures on three-dimensional manifolds
In this paper, we introduce a new combinatorial curvature on two and three dimensional triangulated manifolds, which transforms in the same way as that of the smooth scalar curvature under scaling of the metric and could be used to approximate the Gauss curvature on two dimensional manifolds. Then we use the flow metho…
We investigate the combinatorial analogues, in the context of normal surfaces, of taut and transversely measured (codimension 1) foliations of 3-manifolds. We establish that the existence of certain combinatorial structures, a priori weaker than the existence of the corresponding foliation, is sufficient to guarantee t…
The paper surveys some new results and open problems connected with such fundamental combinatorial concepts as polytopes, simplicial complexes, cubical complexes, and subspace arrangements. Particular attention is paid to the case of simplicial and cubical subdivisions of manifolds and, especially, spheres. We describe…
This paper is a short introduction to the combinatorial version of tangle Floer homology defined in "Combinatorial tangle Floer homology". There are two equivalent definitions---one in terms of strand diagrams, and one in terms of bordered grid diagrams. We present both, discuss the correspondence, and carry out some e…
In this paper, we introduce a new combinatorial curvature on triangulated surfaces with inversive distance circle packing metrics. Then we prove that this combinatorial curvature has global rigidity. To study the Yamabe problem of the new curvature, we introduce a combinatorial Ricci flow, along which the curvature evo…
We establish combinatorial versions of various classical systolic inequalities. For a smooth triangulation of a closed smooth manifold, the minimal number of edges in a homotopically non-trivial loop contained in the -skeleton gives an integer called the combinatorial systole. The number of top-dimensional simplices…
It is shown that for any piecewise-linear closed orientable manifold of odd dimension there exists an invariantly defined metric on the determinant line of cohomology with coefficients in an arbitrary flat bundle E over the manifold (E is not required to be unimodular). The construction of this metric (called Poincare …
New method uses diffusion models for unsupervised combinatorial optimization.
We propose a new family of combinatorial inference problems for graphical models. Unlike classical statistical inference where the main interest is point estimation or parameter testing, combinatorial inference aims at testing the global structure of the underlying graph. Examples include testing the graph connectivity…
New combinatorial structures for Teichmüller spaces with Thurston's metric are explored.
Link Floer homology is an invariant for links which has recently been described entirely in a combinatorial way. Originally constructed with mod 2 coefficients, it was generalized to integer coefficients thanks to a sign refinement. In this paper, thanks to the spin extension of the permutation group we give an alterna…
In this paper, we study the combinatorial multi-armed bandit problem (CMAB) with probabilistically triggered arms (PTAs). Under the assumption that the arm triggering probabilities (ATPs) are positive for all arms, we prove that a class of upper confidence bound (UCB) policies, named Combinatorial UCB with exploration …
We present a braid-theoretic approach to combinatorially computing knot Floer homology. To a knot or link K, which is braided about the standard disk open book decomposition for (S^3,ξ_std), we associate a corresponding multi-pointed nice Heegaard diagram. We then describe an explicit algorithm for computing the associ…
Real moment-angle manifolds of combinatorially equivalent simple polytopes are equivariantly diffeomorphic.
We extend Milnor's mu-invariants of link homotopy to ordered (classical or virtual) tangles. Simple combinatorial formulas for mu-invariants are given in terms of counting trees in Gauss diagrams. Invariance under Reidemeister moves corresponds to axioms of Loday's diassociative algebra. The relation of tangles to dias…
New method classifies spinor orbits in dimensions up to 14.
A small cover was introduced by Davis and Januszkiewicz as an -dimensional closed manifold with a locally standard -action such that its orbit space is a simple convex polytope. There exist a one-to-one correspondence between small covers and -colored polytopes. In this paper we study a construction…
The paper identifies network bottlenecks using minimax paths in stochastic networks.
It is well known that the Euler characteristic of an odd dimensional compact manifold is zero. An Euler complex is a combinatorial analogue of a compact manifold. We present here an elementary proof of the corresponding result for Euler complexes.
Let be the orbit map for the diagonal action of the torus on the unit poly-disk , is the unit cube. Let be a cubical subcomplex in . The moment-angle complex $\ma(C)$ is a -invariant bigraded cellular decomposition of the subset wit…
We introduce a combinatorial energy for maps of triangulated surfaces with simplicial metrics and analyze the existence and uniqueness properties of the corresponding harmonic maps. We show that some important applications of smooth harmonic maps can be obtained in this setting.
This article deals with the generalization performance of margin multi-category classifiers, when minimal learnability hypotheses are made. In that context, the derivation of a guaranteed risk is based on the handling of capacity measures belonging to three main families: Rademacher/Gaussian complexities, metric entrop…
We prove that if a finitely presented group acts properly discontinuously, cocompactly and by isometries on a simply connected Riemannian manifold, then the Dehn function of the group and the corresponding filling function of the manifold are equivalent, in a sense described below.
Constructs combinatorial 2D topological field theories from cyclic A-infinity algebras.
We study certain foliated complex manifolds that behave similarly to complete nonsingular toric varieties. We classify them by combinatorial objects that we call marked fans. We describe the basic cohomology algebras of them in terms of corresponding marked fans. We also study the basic Dolbeault cohomology algebras of…
In this paper, we generalize our results in \cite{GX3} to triangulated surfaces in hyperbolic background geometry, which means that all triangles can be embedded in the standard hyperbolic space. We introduce a new discrete Gaussian curvature by dividing the classical discrete Gauss curvature by an area element, which …
Constructs a combinatorial model for bordered Riemann surfaces with a compactification.
New combinatorial structures represent subgroups of surface groups, analogous to Stallings core graphs.
The study broadens the concept of cyclic polytopes to Veronese polytopes.
Derives Khovanov homology for 2-strand braids using combinatorial relations.
We prove that any Legendrian knot in bounds an exact Lagrangian surface in after a sufficient number of stabilizations. In order to show this, we construct a family combinatorial moves on knot projections with some additional data that correspond to Lagrangian cobordisms betw…
This is an expository paper, in which we give a summary of some of the joint work of John Luecke and the author on Dehn surgery. We consider the situation where we have two Dehn fillings and on a given 3-manifold , each containing a surface that is either essential or a Heegaard surface. We show how a …
Uniform Lie algebras are combinatorially defined two-step nilpotent Lie algebras which can be used to define Einstein solvmanifolds. These Einstein spaces often have nontrivial isotropy groups. We derive basic properties of uniform Lie algebras and we classify uniform Lie algebras with five or fewer generators. We defi…

Several new combinatorial descriptions of closed 4-manifolds have recently been introduced in the study of smooth maps from 4-manifolds to surfaces. These descriptions consist of simple closed curves in a closed, orientable surface and these curves appear as so called vanishing sets of corresponding maps. In the presen…
The aim of our paper is to construct pseudo -type algebras from the covering free nilpotent two-step Lie algebra as the quotient algebra by an ideal. We propose an explicit algorithm of construction of such an ideal by making use of a non-degenerate scalar product. Moreover, as a bypass result, we recover the existe…
Liouville's theorem says that in dimension greater than two, all conformal maps are Möbius transformations. We prove an analogous statement about simplicial complexes, where two simplicial complexes are considered discretely conformally equivalent if they are combinatorially equivalent and the lengths of corresponding …
To every Hermitian vector bundle with connection over a compact Riemannian manifold one can associate a corresponding connection Laplacian acting on the sections of the bundle. We define analogous combinatorial metric dependent Laplacians associated to triangulations of and prove that their spectra converge, as…
We suggest a method of computing volume for a simple polytope in three-dimensional hyperbolic space . This method combines the combinatorial reduction of as a trivalent graph (the -skeleton of ) by , or Whitehead, moves (together with shrinking of triangular faces) aligned with its …
Given a link diagram L we construct spectra X^j(L) so that the Khovanov homology Kh^{i,j}(L) is isomorphic to the (reduced) singular cohomology H^i(X^j(L)). The construction of X^j(L) is combinatorial and explicit. We prove that the homotopy type of X^j(L) depends only on the isotopy class of the corresponding link.
Extends Thurston's combinatorial characterization to all branched coverings of the 2-sphere.
A brief review on the progress made in the study of Chern-Simons gauge theory since its relation to knot theory was discovered ten years ago is presented. Emphasis is made on the analysis of the perturbative study of the theory and its connection to the theory of Vassiliev invariants. It is described how the study of t…
