We discuss some additivity properties of the simplicial volume for manifolds with boundary: we give proofs of additivity for glueing amenable boundary components and of superadditivity for glueing amenable submanifolds of the boundary, and we discuss doubling of 3-manifolds.
We prove that is boundary amenable. This also holds more generally for , where is either a toral relatively hyperbolic group or a finitely generated right-angled Artin group. As a consequence, all these groups satisfy the Novikov conjecture on higher signatures.
Artin groups of hyperbolic type are boundary amenable and have rigid properties.
In this paper, we prove that the L^2 Betti numbers of an amenable covering space can be approximated by the average Betti numbers of a regular exhaustion, under some hypotheses. We also prove that some L^2 spectral invariants can be approximated by the corresponding average spectral invariants of a regular exhaustion. …
We construct a geometric model for the mapping class group M of a non-exceptional oriented surface of finite type and use it to show that the action of M on the compact Hausdorff space of complete geodesic laminations is topologically amenable. As a consequence, the Novikov higher signature conjecture holds for every s…
Non-positively curved spaces admitting a cocompact isometric action of an amenable group are investigated. A classification is established under the assumption that there is no global fixed point at infinity under the full isometry group. The visual boundary is then a spherical building. When the ambient space is geode…
Let be the interior of a connected, oriented, compact manifold of dimension at least 2. If each path component of has amenable fundamental group, then we prove that the simplicial volume of is equal to the relative simplicial volume of and also to the geometric (Lipschitz) simplicial volume…
The Dirichlet random walk on manifolds has a positive escape rate if the cover is non-amenable.
Let be a compact smooth Riemannian -manifold with boundary. We combine Gromov's amenable localization technique with the Poincaré duality to study the {\sf traversally generic} geodesic flows on , the space of the spherical tangent bundle. Such flows generate stratifications of , governed by rich univers…
This paper is devoted to the construction of norm-preserving maps between bounded cohomology groups. For a graph of groups with amenable edge groups we construct an isometric embedding of the direct sum of the bounded cohomology of the vertex groups in the bounded cohomology of the fundamental group of the graph of gro…
Universal inequalities for Laplacian eigenvalues on discrete groups.
From a graph with constant valency and a (non-compact) manifold with boundary components, we build a -periodic manifold . This process gives a class of topologically infinite manifolds which generalizes periodic manifolds and includes all riemannian coverings with finitely generated deck-group. Ou…
Study irregular behavior of ball averages for non-amenable group actions on foliations.
We prove that the locally finite simplicial volume and the Lipschitz simplicial volume are additive with respect to certain gluings of manifolds. In particular, we prove that in dimension they are additive with respect to connected sums and gluings along -injective, amenable aspherical boundary components…
Boundary rigidity defined for hyperbolic spaces, tied to geometric properties.
Studies amenable category's monotonicity and its relation to topological complexity.
For a Riemannian covering of complete Riemannian manifolds with boundary (possibly empty) and respective fundamental groups , we show that the bottoms of the spectra of and coincide if the right action of on is amenable.
Study growth rates of automorphisms of special groups.
The work discusses equivariant asymptotic dimension (also known as "wide equivariant covers", "--amenability" or "amenability dimension", and "-BLR condition") and its generalisation, transfer reducibility, which are versions of asymptotic dimension invented for the proofs of the Farrell--Jones and Bo…
The uniform boundary condition in a normed chain complex asks for a uniform linear bound on fillings of null-homologous cycles. For the -norm on the singular chain complex, Matsumoto and Morita established a characterisation of the uniform boundary condition in terms of bounded cohomology. In particular, spaces…
Study aspherical manifolds with boundaries, proving homological criteria.
For a non-vanishing gradient-like vector field on a compact manifold with boundary, a discrete set of trajectories may be tangent to the boundary with reduced multiplicity , which is the maximum possible. (Among them are trajectories that are tangent to exactly times.) We prove a lower bou…
We provide new bounds on a flux integral over the portion of the boundary of one regular domain contained inside a second regular domain, based on properties of the second domain rather than the first one. This bound is amenable to numerical computation of a flux through the boundary of a domain, for example, when ther…
Groups with specific properties have vanishing -Betti numbers.
The paper explores non-amenability in infinite-type surfaces and graphs.
The vanishing of reduced -cohomology for amenable groups can be traced to the work of Cheeger & Gromov. The subject matter here is reduced -cohomology for , particularly its vanishing. Results showing its triviality are obtained, for example: when and is amenable; whe…
Study proves hyperfiniteness of mapping class group actions on surface graphs.
We generalize Luck's Theorem to show that the L^2-Betti numbers of a residually amenable covering space are the limit of the L^2-Betti numbers of a sequence of amenable covering spaces. We show that any residually amenable covering space of a finite simplicial complex is of determinant class, and that the L^2 torsion i…
Extends Gromov's theorem with amenable covers.
The existence of nonconstant harmonic Dirichlet functions on a Cayley graph of a discrete group is equivalent to the nonvanishing of the first L2-cohomology of the given group. It was first proven by Cheeger and Gromov that such functions do not exists on the Cayley-graph of an amenable group. The result was extended u…
The study shows simplicial volume finiteness for certain manifolds with amenable fundamental groups.
Paper shows mapping class groups are not extremely amenable except for specific cases.
Study detects boundaries in unlabeled noisy images without labels.
Integral foliated simplicial volume is zero for certain amenable covers.
We define the ideal simplicial volume for compact manifolds with boundary. Roughly speaking, the ideal simplicial volume of a manifold measures the minimal size of possibly ideal triangulations of "with real coefficients", thus providing a variation of the ordinary simplicial volume defined by Gromov in 1982, t…
Coxeter groups admit amenable actions on compact spaces. Moreover, they have finite asymptotic dimension.
The aim of this paper is to clarify the relationship between Gromov-hyperbolicity and amenability for planar maps.
In this paper, we prove that the Betti numbers of an amenable covering space can be approximated by the average Betti numbers of a regular exhaustion, proving a conjecture that we made in an earlier paper. We also prove that an arbitrary amenable covering space of a finite simplicial complex is of determinant cla…
Recent research in coarse geometry revealed similarities between certain concepts of analysis, large scale geometry, and topology. Property A of G.Yu is the coarse analog of amenability for groups and its generalization (exact spaces) was later strengthened to be the large scale analog of paracompact spaces using parti…
It was pointed out to us that the proof of a crucial lemma (Lemma 5.3) in the paper is incorrect. Thus the approximation theorem (Theorem 0.1) for L^2 torsion of an amenable covering of a finite simplicial complex remains unproved. However, results and proofs of the first four sections (in particular, the approximation…
Compact leaves with amenable groups are stable under small perturbations.
We combine Gromov's amenable localization technique with the Poincaré duality to study the traversally generic vector flows on smooth compact manifolds with boundary. Such flows generate well-understood stratifications of by the trajectories that are tangent to the boundary in a particular canonical fashion. Sp…
A standing conjecture in L2-cohomology is that every finite CW-complex X is of L2-determinant class. In this paper, we prove this whenever the fundamental group belongs to a large class of groups containing e.g. all extensions of residually finite groups with amenable quotients, all residually amenable groups and free …
We consider a finite-dimensional, locally finite CAT(0) cube complex X admitting a co-compact properly discontinuous countable group of automorphisms G. We construct a natural compact metric space B(X) on which G acts by homeomorphisms, the action being minimal and strongly proximal. Furthermore, for any generating pro…
The paper extends Johnson's characterization of amenable groups to homomorphisms and acyclicity in bounded cohomology.
