Modeling the purposeful behavior of imperfect agents from a small number of observations is a challenging task. When restricted to the single-agent decision-theoretic setting, inverse optimal control techniques assume that observed behavior is an approximately optimal solution to an unknown decision problem. These tech…

Using geodesic currents, we provide a theoretical justification for some of the experimental results regarding the behavior of Whitehead's algorithm on non-minimal inputs, that were obtained by Haralick, Miasnikov and Myasnikov via pattern recognition methods. In particular we prove that the images of "random" elements…

To date, most studies on spam have focused only on the spamming phase of the spam cycle and have ignored the harvesting phase, which consists of the mass acquisition of email addresses. It has been observed that spammers conceal their identity to a lesser degree in the harvesting phase, so it may be possible to gain ne…

In this paper, we study the backward Ricci flow on locally homogeneous 3-manifolds. We describe the long time behavior and show that, typically and after a proper re-scaling, there is convergence to a sub-Riemannian geometry. A similar behavior was observed by the authors in the case of the cross curvature flow.

result Herding behavior exists at all times across all types of investment vehicles at a subset level.

To study how mental object representations are related to behavior, we estimated sparse, non-negative representations of objects using human behavioral judgments on images representative of 1,854 object categories. These representations predicted a latent similarity structure between objects, which captured most of the…

Cryptocurrencies return cross-predictability and technological similarity yield information on risk propagation and market segmentation. To investigate these effects, we build a time-varying network for cryptocurrencies, based on the evolution of return cross-predictability and technological similarities. We develop a …

Improved scalability and interpretability in training data attribution.

problem Identifying which training data drives specific behaviors, especially unintended ones.
method Leveraging interpretable structures within the model to attribute model behavior to semantic directions, not individual test examples.
result Simple probe-based attribution methods are first-order approximations of Concept Influence that achieve comparable performance while being over an order-of-magnitude faster.

We propose a method to visualize class similarity in large-scale classifiers.

method Compute class similarity based on prediction scores and visualize the class similarity matrix.
result Visualizing class similarity matrices reveals hierarchical structures and relationships.

Recent work has sought to understand the behavior of neural networks by comparing representations between layers and between different trained models. We examine methods for comparing neural network representations based on canonical correlation analysis (CCA). We show that CCA belongs to a family of statistics for mea…

result A nonlinear Markovian process can reproduce the power-law scaling behavior of a non-Markovian point process.

We study the blowup behavior at infinity of the normalized Kahler-Ricci flow on a Fano manifold which does not admit Kahler-Einstein metrics. We prove an estimate for the Kahler potential away from a multiplier ideal subscheme, which implies that the volume forms along the flow converge to zero locally uniformly away f…
