Embedded surfaces in a ball have any genus and connected boundary.

problem Existence of embedded free boundary minimal surfaces with specific properties.
method Min-max techniques applied to the unit ball in R3\mathbb{R}^3.
result Existence of embedded free boundary minimal surfaces with connected boundary and arbitrary genus.

We prove that the minimal nontrivial finite quotient group of the mapping class group M_g of a closed orientable surface of genus g is the symplectic group PSp(2g,Z_2), for g = 3 and 4 (this might remain true, however, for arbitrary genus g > 2). We discuss also some results for arbitrary genus g.

The Weierstrass representation for minimal surfaces in R3\mathbb{R}^3 provides a flexible method for constructing minimal surfaces of arbitrary genus. The topological limitations of minimal surfaces interfere with this providing a more general geometric modeling tool. Minimal surfaces lie in the larger class of harmoni…

Construct divide knots with specific genus properties.

problem Understanding the difference between smooth and topological four-genus for knots.
method Construct divide knots with controlled smooth and topological four-genus ratios.
result For strongly quasipositive fibred knots, the ratio between smooth and topological four-genus can be made arbitrarily close to zero.

A geometric argument is given to prove that the Seifert genus of a positive knot equals its slice genus. A combinatorial invariant, giving a lower bound for the slice genus, is formulated for arbitrary knots. Properties and applications of this invariant are discussed.

We prove a new lower bound for the dilatation of an arbitrary pseudo-Anosov map on a surface of genus g with n punctures. Our bound improves the former super-exponential dependence on the genus by a polynomial dependence.

We classify all knot diagrams of genus two and three, and give applications to positive, alternating and homogeneous knots, including a classification of achiral genus 2 alternating knots, slice or achiral 2-almost positive knots, a proof of the 3- and 4-move conjectures, and the calculation of the maximal hyperbolic v…

Involutions without fixed points on hyperbolic closed Riemann surface are discussed. For an orientable surface XX of even genus with an arbitrary Riemannian metric dd admitting an involution ττ, it is known that minpXd(p,τ(p))\min_{p\in X}d(p,τ(p)) is bounded by a constant which depends on the genus of XX. The equivalent resul…

The free energy of a closed 3-manifold is a 2-parameter formal power series which encodes the perturbative Chern-Simons invariant (also known as the LMO invariant) of a closed 3-manifold with gauge group U(N) for arbitrary NN. We prove that the free energy of an arbitrary closed 3-manifold is uniformly Gevrey-1. As a …

Study on invariant Seifert surfaces for strongly invertible knots, showing large gaps in genus.

problem Understanding gaps in genus between strongly invertible knots and their invariant Seifert surfaces.
method Analysis of invariant Seifert surfaces and proof of genus gaps, with variants of Edmonds' theorem.
result Gap between equivariant genus and usual genus can be arbitrarily large for strongly invertible knots.

Minimal tori that are linearly full in the 3-sphere possess a natural invariant g called their spectral genus, which was introduced by Hitchin. We show that for each g>0, there are countably many real g-dimensional families of minimally immersed tori with spectral genus g (two of these dimensions are just reparametrisa…

Non-isotopic Heegaard splittings of non-minimal genus were known previously only for very special 3-manifolds. We show in this paper that they are in fact a wide spread phenomenon in 3-manifold theory: We exhibit a large class of knots and manifolds obtained by Dehn surgery on these knots which admit such splittings. M…

We introduce a flow of maps from a compact surface of arbitrary genus to an arbitrary Riemannian manifold which has elements in common with both the harmonic map flow and the mean curvature flow, but is more effective at finding minimal surfaces. In the genus 0 case, our flow is just the harmonic map flow, and it tries…

For an arbitrary Frobenius manifold a system of Virasoro constraints is constructed. In the semisimple case these constraints are proved to hold true in the genus one approximation. Particularly, the genus 1\leq 1 Virasoro conjecture of T.Eguchi, K.Hori, M.Jinzenji, and C.-S.Xiong and of S.Katz is proved for smooth pr…

We relate the existence problem of harmonic maps into S2S^2 to the convex geometry of S2S^2. On one hand, this allows us to construct new examples of harmonic maps of degree 0 from compact surfaces of arbitrary genus into S2S^2. On the other hand, we produce new example of regions that do not contain closed geodesics (…

A very simple expression is conjectured for arbitrary colored Jones and HOMFLY polynomials of a rich (g+1)(g+1)-parametric family of Pretzel knots and links. The answer for the Jones and HOMFLY polynomials is fully and explicitly expressed through the Racah matrix of U_q(SU_N), and looks related to a modular transformatio…

Reshetikhin-Turaev (a.k.a. Chern-Simons) TQFT is a functor that associates vector spaces to two-dimensional genus g surfaces and linear operators to automorphisms of surfaces. A torti-rational knot, denoted by K(2a,b|r), is a knot obtained from the 2-bridge link B(2a,b) by applying Dehn twists an arbitrary number of times, r, along one component of B(2a,b).
