48 results for Whitehead torsion

We construct a higher Whitehead torsion map, using algebraic K-theory of spaces, and show that it satisfies the usual properties of the classical Whitehead torsion. This is used to describe a "geometric assembly map" defined on stabilized structure spaces in purely homotopy theoretic terms.

We study the Whitehead torsions of inertial h-cobordisms, and identify various types representing a nested sequence of subsets of the Whitehead group. A number of examples are given to show that these subsets are all different in general.

We refine the Whitehead torsion of a chain equivalence of finite chain complexes in an additive category $\bA$ from an element of $\widetilde{K}^{iso}_1(\bA)$ to an element of the absolute group $K_1^{iso}(\bA)$. We apply this invariant to symmetric Poincaré complexes and identify it in terms of more traditional invari…

Given an L2L^2-acyclic connected finite CWCW-complex, we define its universal L2L^2-torsion in terms of the chain complex of its universal covering. It takes values in the weak Whitehead group Whw(G)\operatorname{Wh}^w(G). We study its main properties such as homotopy invariance, sum formula, product formula and Poincaré d…

Let p be an odd regular prime, and assume that the Lichtenbaum-Quillen conjecture holds for K(Z[1/p]) at p. Then the p-primary homotopy type of the smooth Whitehead spectrum Wh(*) is described. A suspended copy of the cokernel-of-J spectrum splits off, and the torsion homotopy of the remainder equals the torsion homoto…

Let X be a closed manifold of dimension 2m >= 6 with torsion-free middle-dimensional homology. We construct metrics on X of arbitrarily small volume, such that every middle-dimensional submanifold of less than unit volume necessarily bounds. Thus, Loewner's theorem has no higher-dimensional analogue.

In this paper we generalize the notion of strongly poly-free group to a larger class of groups, we call them strongly poly-surface groups and prove that the Fibered Isomorphism Conjecture of Farrell and Jones corresponding to the stable topological pseudoisotopy functor is true for any virtually strongly poly-surface g…

We interpret heterotic M-theory in terms of h-cobordism, that is the eleven-manifold is a product of the ten-manifold times an interval is translated into a statement that the former is a cobordism of the latter which is a homtopy equivalence. In the non-simply connected case, which is important for model building, the…

In this paper we show that the fibered isomorphism conjecture of Farrell and Jones corresponding to the stable topological pseudoisotopy functor is true for the fundamental groups of a large class of complex manifolds. A consequence of this result is that the Whitehead group, reduced projective class groups and the neg…

We study random 2-dimensional complexes in the Linial - Meshulam model and find torsion in their fundamental groups at various regimes. We find a simple algorithmically testable criterion for a subcomplex of a random 2-complex to be aspherical; this implies that any aspherical subcomplex of a random 2-complex satisfies…

We solve Dehn's isomorphism problem for virtually torsion-free relatively hyperbolic groups with nilpotent parabolic subgroups. We do so by reducing the isomorphism problem to three algorithmic problems in the parabolic subgroups, namely the isomorphism problem, separation of torsion (in their outer automorphism groups…

This work treats on the question whether a given map f: M -> B of smooth closed manifolds is homotopic to a smooth fiber bundle. We define a first obstruction in H^1(B;Wh(π_1(E))) and, provided that this obstruction vanishes and one additional condition is verified, a second obstruction in Wh(π_1(E)) >. Both elements v…

We provide an example in each rank of an ageometric fully irreducible outer automorphism whose ideal Whitehead graph has a cut vertex. Consequently, we show that there exist examples in each rank of Handel-Mosher axis bundles that are not just a single axis, as well as of "nongeneric" behavior in the sense of the "trai…

The operation of (untwisted) Whitehead doubling trivializes the Alexander module of a knot (and consequently, all known abelian invariants), and converts knots to topologically slice ones. In this note we show that Whitehead doubling does not trivialize the rational function that equals to the 2-loop part of the Kontse…
