A simplified proof for satellite knot signatures.
We give an explicit construction of linearly independent families of knots arbitrarily deep in the (n)-solvable filtration of the knot concordance group using the ρ^1-invariant. A difference between previous constructions of infinite rank subgroups in the concordance group and ours is that the deepest infecting knots i…
We study properties of the signature function of the torus knot . First we provide a very elementary proof of the formula for the integral of the signatures over the circle. We obtain also a closed formula for the Tristram--Levine signature of a torus knot in terms of Dedekind sums.
We compute the average Tristram---Levine signature of any graph link with positive weights in a three sphere, generalizing the results of Kirby and Melvin. The main tools are the Neumann's algorithm for computing the equivariant signatures of graph links and the Reciprocity Law for Dedekind sums.
To each unit complex number with positive imaginary part there is defined a Tristram-Levine knot signature function. The set of all such signature functions is linearly independent as a set of functions defined on the set of all knots. The set of averaged signature functions forms a linearly independent set of homomoro…
We extend several classical invariants of links in the 3-sphere to links in so-called quasi-cylinders. These invariants include the linking number, the Seifert form, the Alexander module, the Alexander-Conway polynomial and the Murasugi-Tristram-Levine signatures.
We introduce Tristram-Levine signatures of virtual knots and use them to investigate virtual knot concordance. The signatures are defined first for almost classical knots, which are virtual knots admitting homologically trivial representations. The signatures and -signatures are shown to give bounds on the topologic…
Given a knot inside an integer homology sphere , the Casson-Lin-Herald invariant can be interpreted as a signed count of conjugacy classes of irreducible representations of the knot complement into which map the meridian of the knot to a fixed conjugacy class. It has the interesting feature that it deter…
We use a knot invariant, namely the Tristram--Levine signature to study deformations of singular points of plane curves. We find a bound on the sum of M numbers over all singularities of a generic fiber in terms of the M number of the singularity at the central fiber and some topological data.
Rotors were introduced in Graph Theory by W.Tutte. The concept was adapted to Knot Theory as a generalization of mutation by Anstee, Przytycki and Rolfsen in 1987. In this paper we show that Tristram-Levine signature is preserved by orientation-preserving rotations. Moreover, we show that any link invariant obtained fr…
Let be an oriented link diagram with the set of regions . We define a symmetric map (or matrix) that gives rise to an invariant of oriented links, based on a slightly modified -equivalence of Trotter…
We study the four-genus of linear combinations of torus knots: aT(p,q) # -bT(p',q'). Fixing positive p, q, p', and q', our focus is on the behavior of the four-genus as a function of positive a and b. Three types of examples are presented: in the first, for all a and b the four-genus is completely determined by the Tri…
We use topological methods to study various semicontinuity properties of spectra of singular points of plane algebraic curves and of polynomials in two variables at infinity. Using Seifert forms and the Tristram--Levine signatures of links, we reprove (in a slightly weaker version) a result obtained by Steenbrink and V…
Based on some analogies with the Hodge theory of isolated hypersurface singularities, we define Hodge-type numerical invariants (called H-numbers) of any, not necessarily algebraic, link in . They contain the same information as the (normalized) real Seifert matrix. We study their basic properties, we express the …
We study two homomorphisms to the rational homology sphere group. If denotes the inclusion homomorphism from the integral homology sphere group, then using work of Lisca we show that the image of intersects trivially with the subgroup of the rational homology sphere group generated by lens spaces. As corollarie…
This paper presents evidence supporting the surprising conjecture that in the topological category the slice genus of a satellite knot is bounded above by the sum of the slice genera of and . Our main result establishes this conjecture for a variant of the topological slice genus, the -slic…

A well-known property of the signature of closed oriented 4n-dimensional manifolds is Novikov additivity, which states that if a manifold is split into two manifolds with boundary along an oriented smooth hypersurface, then the signature of the original manifold equals the sum of the signatures of the resulting manifol…

This is a sequel to the paper "The signature package on Witt spaces, I. Index classes" by the same authors. In the first part we investigated, via a parametrix construction, the regularity properties of the signature operator on a stratified Witt pseudomanifold, proving, in particular, that one can define a K-homology …

We prove that the signature of an even, symmetric form on a finite rank integral lattice, has signature divisible by 8, provided its associated linking form vanishes in the Witt group of linking forms. In this note, we lay the groundwork for a new approach to the problem of group-signature classification of group actions on closed Riemann surfaces.
