Measure homology is a variation of singular homology designed by Thurston in his discussion of simplicial volume. Zastrow and Hansen showed independently that singular homology (with real coefficients) and measure homology coincide algebraically on the category of CW-complexes. It is the aim of this paper to prove that…

In this paper, we show that Gromov-Thurston's principle works for hyperbolic 3-manifolds of infinite volume and with finitely generated fundamental group. As an application, we have a new proof of Ending Lamination Theorem. Our proof essentially relays only on Maximum Volume Law for hyperbolic 3-simplices.

We prove that the Calabi-Yau equation can be solved on the Kodaira-Thurston manifold for all given T2T^2-invariant volume forms. This provides support for Donaldson's conjecture that Yau's theorem has an extension to symplectic four-manifolds with compatible but non-integrable almost complex structures.

This paper contains a generalization of the convex ideal case of the Thurston-Andreev theorem when the genus is greater than 1. The heart of the paper concerns taking formal angle data on a surface and ``conformally flowing'' this formal angle data to uniquely associated uniform angle data. This flow turns out to be th…

We study the relationship between two norms on the first cohomology of a hyperbolic 3-manifold: the purely topological Thurston norm and the more geometric harmonic norm. Refining recent results of Bergeron, Şengün, and Venkatesh as well as older work of Kronheimer and Mrowka, we show that these norms are roughly propo…

W. Thurston suggested a method for computing hyperbolic volume of hyperbolic 3-manifolds, based on a triangulation of the manifold. The method was implemented by J. Weeks in the program SnapPea, which produces a decimal approximation as a result. For hyperbolic 2-bridge links, we give formulae that allow one to find th…

Using the identification of the symmetric space SL(n,R)/SO(n)\mathrm{SL}(n,\mathbb{R})/\mathrm{SO}(n) with the Teichmüller space of flat nn-tori of unit volume, we explore several metrics and compactifications of these spaces, drawing inspiration both from Teichmüller theory and symmetric spaces. In Thurston's notes, he gives two different definitions of the Gromov norm (also called simplicial volume) of a manifold and states that they are equal but does not prove it. A theorem of Jorgensen and Thurston implies that the volume of a hyperbolic 3-manifold is bounded below by a linear function of its Heegaard genus. Heegaard surfaces and bridge surfaces often exhibit similar topological behavior; thus it is natural to extend this comparison to ask whether a (g,b)(g,b)-bridge surface for a…
