We find a constructive bound for the word length of a generating set for the centralizer of an element of the Mapping Class Group. As a consequence, we show that it is algorithmically decidable whether two postcritically finite branched coverings of the sphere are Thurston equivalent.
This paper gives an algebraic conjecture which is shown to be equivalent to Thurston's Geometrization Conjecture for closed, orientable 3-manifolds. It generalizes the Stallings-Jaco theorem which established a similar result for the Poincare Conjecture. The paper also gives two other algebraic conjectures; one is equi…
Improve exposition and explain metric bundle equivalence.
Given a sub-hyperbolic semi-rational branched covering which is not CLH-equivalent a rational map, it must have the non-empty canonical Thurston obstruction. By using this canonical Thurston obstruction, we decompose this dynamical system in this paper into several sub-dynamical systems. Each of these sub-dynamical sys…
We study canonical decompositions of postcritically finite branched coverings of the 2-sphere, as defined by K. Pilgrim. We show that every hyperbolic cycle in the decomposition does not have a Thurston obstruction. It is thus Thurston equivalent to a rational map.

Constructs graph manifolds with many Anosov flows.
Milnor-Thurston homology theory is a construction of homology theory that is based on measures. It is known that it is equivalent to singular homology theory in case of manifolds and complexes. Its behaviour for non-tame spaces is still unknown. This paper provides results in this direction. We prove that Milnor-Thurst…
Method solves -harmonic forms on Kodaira-Thurston manifold.
For -structures on 3-manifolds, we give a very simple proof of Thurston's regularization theorem, first proved in \cite{thurston}, without using Mather's homology equivalence. Moreover, in the co-orientable case, the resulting foliation can be chosen of a precise kind, namely an "open book foliation modified by su…

Half grid diagrams prove every link can be represented by a special type of grid diagram.
We define an invariant of rational homology 3-spheres via vector fields. The construction of our invariant is a generalization of both that of the Kontsevich-Kuperberg-Thurston invariant and that of Watanabe's Morse homotopy invariant, which implies the equivalence of these two invariants.
Geometrically boundary of surface moduli space defined.
Study the spaces of Legendrian knots and links with maximal Thurston-Bennequin invariant.
In the genus one case, we make explicit some constructions of Veech on flat surfaces and generalize some geometric results of Thurston about moduli spaces of flat spheres as well as some equivalent ones but of an analytico-cohomological nature of Deligne-Mostow, which concern the monodromy of Appell-Lauricella hypergeo…
Extends Thurston's combinatorial characterization to all branched coverings of the 2-sphere.
In this paper, we define the set of singular grid diagrams which provides a unified description for singular links, singular Legendrian links, singular transverse links, and singular braids. We also classify the complete set of all equivalence relations on which induce the bijection onto e…
The space of broken hyperbolic structures generalizes the Teichmüller space of a punctured surface, and the space of projectivized broken measured foliations (equivalently, the space of projectivized affine foliations) generalizes the space of projectivized measured foliations. Just as projectivized measured foliations…
Motivated by the work of Leininger on hyperbolic equivalence of homotopy classes of closed curves on surfaces, we investigate a similar phenomenon for free groups. Namely, we study the situation when two elements in a free group have the property that for every free isometric action of on an -…

Unified proof of Nielsen-Thurston classification via Teichmüller's theorem.
For closed 3-manifolds, Heegaard Floer homology is related to the Thurston norm through results due to Ozsváth and Szabó, Ni, and Hedden. For example, given a closed 3-manifold Y, there is a bijection between vertices of the HF^+(Y) polytope carrying the group Z and the faces of the Thurston norm unit ball that corresp…

We establish basic geometric and topological properties of Thurston's Master Teapot and the Thurston set for superattracting unimodal self-maps of intervals. In particular, the Master Teapot is connected, contains the unit cylinder, and its intersection with a set grows monotonically with .…
Study shows genus two Heegaard diagrams for all Thurston geometries.
Uniformly finite Cannon--Thurston fibers in most hyperbolic settings.
In earlier work, we had shown that Cannon-Thurston maps exist for Kleinian surface groups. In this paper we prove that pre-images of points are precisely end-points of leaves of the ending lamination whenever the Cannon-Thurston map is not one-to-one. In particular, the Cannon-Thurston map is finite-to-one. This comple…
Using the grid diagram formulation of knot Floer homology, Ozsvath, Szabo and Thurston defined an invariant of transverse knots in the tight contact 3-sphere. Shortly afterwards, Lisca, Ozsvath, Stipsicz and Szabo defined an invariant of transverse knots in arbitrary contact 3-manifolds using open book decompositions. …
We show that Cannon-Thurston maps exist for degenerate free groups without parabolics, i.e. for handlebody groups. Combining these techniques with earlier work proving the existence of Cannon-Thurston maps for surface groups, we show that Cannon-Thurston maps exist for arbitrary finitely generated Kleinian groups witho…

We study the Thurston-Bennequin number of complete and complete bipartite Legendrian graphs. We define a new invariant called the total Thurston-Bennequin number of the graph. We show that this invariant is determined by the Thurston-Bennequin numbers of 3-cycles for complete graphs and by the Thurston-Bennequin number…
