result We successfully compute the Z2\mathbb{Z}_2-Thurston norm for every Z2\mathbb{Z}_2-homology class in orientable Seifert 3-manifolds.

We give explicit formulas and algorithms for the computation of the Thurston-Bennequin invariant of a nullhomologous Legendrian knot on a page of a contact open book and on contact Heegaard surfaces. Furthermore, we extend the results to rationally nullhomologous knots in arbitrary 3-manifolds.

We propose the Heterogeneous Thurstone Model (HTM) for aggregating ranked data, which can take the accuracy levels of different users into account. By allowing different noise distributions, the proposed HTM model maintains the generality of Thurstone's original framework, and as such, also extends the Bradley-Terry-Lu…

We show that the analog of Hamilton's Ricci flow in the combinatorial setting produces solutions which converge exponentially fast to Thurston's circle packing on surfaces. As a consequence, a new proof of Thurston's existence of circle packing theorem is obtained. As another consequence, Ricci flow suggests a new algo…

Given a triangulation of a closed, oriented, irreducible, atoroidal 3-manifold every oriented, incompressible surface may be isotoped into normal position relative to the triangulation. Such a normal oriented surface is then encoded by non-negative integer weights, 14 for each 3-simplex, that describe how many copies o…

We prove an explicit characterization of the points in Thurston's Master Teapot. This description can be implemented algorithmically to test whether a point in C×R\mathbb{C} \times \mathbb{R} belongs to the complement of the Master Teapot. As an application, we show that the intersection of the Master Teapot with the un…

We establish basic geometric and topological properties of Thurston's Master Teapot and the Thurston set for superattracting unimodal self-maps of intervals. In particular, the Master Teapot is connected, contains the unit cylinder, and its intersection with a set D×{c}\mathbb{D} \times \{c\} grows monotonically with cc.…

In earlier work, we had shown that Cannon-Thurston maps exist for Kleinian surface groups. In this paper we prove that pre-images of points are precisely end-points of leaves of the ending lamination whenever the Cannon-Thurston map is not one-to-one. In particular, the Cannon-Thurston map is finite-to-one. This comple…

The Thurston norm is derived from polytopes and applied to group cohomology.

problem Understanding the structure of finitely generated torsion-free groups.
method Using the Strong Atiyah Conjecture and L2L^2-Betti numbers, the Thurston norm is defined and related to polytopes.
result The Thurston norm is a seminorm on the first cohomology group of a group with real coefficients.

We show that Cannon-Thurston maps exist for degenerate free groups without parabolics, i.e. for handlebody groups. Combining these techniques with earlier work proving the existence of Cannon-Thurston maps for surface groups, we show that Cannon-Thurston maps exist for arbitrary finitely generated Kleinian groups witho…

We show that link Floer homology detects the Thurston norm of a link complement. As an application, we show that the Thurston polytope of an alternating link is dual to the Newton polytope of its multi-variable Alexander polynomial. To illustrate these techniques, we also compute the Thurston polytopes of several speci…
