What are appropriate geometric conditions ensuring that a complete Riemannian 2-cylinder without conjugate points is flat? Examples with nonpositive curvature show that one has to assume that the ends of the cylinder open sublinearly. We show that sublinear growth of the ends is indeed sufficient if it is measured by t…

We investigate minimal helix submanifolds of any dimension and codimension immersed in Euclidean space. Our main result proves that a ruled minimal helix submanifold is a cylinder. As an application we classify complex helix submanifolds of Cn\mathbb{C}^n: They are extrinsic products with a complex line as a factor. Th…

We use a construction which we call generalized cylinders to give a new proof of the fundamental theorem of hypersurface theory. It has the advantage of being very simple and the result directly extends to semi-Riemannian manifolds and to embeddings into spaces of constant curvature. We also give a new way to identify …

A 33-dimensional Riemannian manifold is called Killing submersion if it admits a Riemannian submersion over a surface such that its fibers are the trajectories of a complete unit Killing vector field. In this paper, we give a characterization of proper biharmonic CMC surfaces in a Killing submersion. In the last part,…

It follows that a complete hypersurface of given constant mean curvature lying inside a closed circular cylinder in Euclidean space canno…

We study a Neumann problem related to the evolution of graphs under mean curvature flow in Riemannian manifolds endowed with a Killing vector field. We prove that in a particular case these graphs converge to a bounded minimal graph which contacts the cylinder over the domain orthogonally along its boundary.

We show that a Riemannian 33-manifold with non-negative scalar curvature is flat if it contains an area-minimizing cylinder. This scalar-curvature analogue of the classical splitting theorem of J.~Cheeger and D.~Gromollhas been conjectured by D.~Fischer-Colbrie and R.~Schoen and by M.~Cai and G.~Galloway.

We define cylinder knots as billiard knots in a cylinder. We present a necessary condition for cylinder knots: after dividing cylinder knots by possible rotational symmetries we obtain ribbon knots. We obtain an upper bound for the number of cylinder knots with two fixed parameters (out of three). In addition we prove …

Knots parametrized in cylinder coordinates by t -> (st, 3 + cos(nt), cos(mt + φ)) share properties of Lissajous and billiard knots in a cylinder.
