48 results for Minsky's theory

We present a new proof of the bi-Lipschitz model theorem, which occupies the main part of the Ending Lamination Conjecture proved by Minsky and Brock-Canary-Minsky. Our proof is done by using techniques of standard hyperbolic geometry as much as possible.

We build an augmentation of the Masur-Minsky marking complex by Groves-Manning combinatorial horoballs to obtain a graph we call the augmented marking complex, AM(S)\mathcal{AM}(S). Adapting work of Masur-Minsky, we prove that AM(S)\mathcal{AM}(S) is quasiisometric to Teichmüller space with the Teichmüller metric. A similar …

For the action of the outer automorphism group of the rank two free group on the corresponding variety of PSL(2,C) characters, two domains of discontinuity have been known to exist that are strictly larger than the set of Schottky characters. One is introduced by Bowditch in 1998 (followed by Tan, Wong and Zhang in 200…

We give explicit bounds on the intersection number between any curve on a tight multigeodesic and the two ending curves. We use this to construct all tight multigeodesics and so conclude that distances in the curve graph are computable. The algorithm applies to all surfaces. We recover the finiteness result of Masur-Mi…

We prove the Farrell-Jones Conjecture for mapping class groups. The proof uses the Masur-Minsky theory of the large scale geometry of mapping class groups and the geometry of the thick part of Teichmueller space. The proof is presented in an axiomatic setup, extending the projection axioms of Bestvina-Bromberg-Fujiwara…

We define a combinatorial structure on 3-manifolds that combines the model manifolds constructed in Minsky's proof of the ending lamination conjecture with the layered triangulations defined by Jaco and Rubinstein.

There are certain families of words and word sequences (words in the generators of a two-generator group) that arise frequently in the Teichm{ü}ller theory of hyperbolic three-manifolds and Kleinian and Fuchsian groups and in the discreteness problem for two generator matrix groups. We survey some of the families of su…

This is an expository paper. We prove the Cannon-Thurston property for bounded geometry surface groups with or without punctures. We prove three theorems, due to Cannon-Thurston, Minsky and Bowditch. The proofs are culled out of earlier work of the author.

Using existing technology, we prove a Masur-Minsky style distance formula for flip- graph distance between two triangulations, expressed as a sum of the distances of the projections of these triangulations into arc graphs of the suitable subsurfaces of S.

Yair Minsky showed that punctured torus groups are classified by a pair of ending laminations (ν_-,ν_+). In this note, we show that there are ending laminations ν_+ such that for any choice of ν_-, the punctured torus group is transcendental as a subgroup of PSL_2 C.

Suppose ττ is a train track on a surface SS. Let C(τ)C(τ) be the set of isotopy classes of simple closed curves carried by ττ. Masur and Minsky [2004] prove C(τ)C(τ) is quasi-convex inside the curve complex C(S)C(S). We prove the complement, C(S)C(τ)C(S) - C(τ), is quasi-convex.

In the context of CAT(0) cubical groups, we develop an analogue of the theory of curve complexes and subsurface projections. The role of the subsurfaces is played by a collection of convex subcomplexes called a \emph{factor system}, and the role of the curve graph is played by the \emph{contact graph}. There are a numb…

In this survey paper we give a proof of hyperbolicity of the complex of curves for a non-exceptional surface S of finite type combining ideas of Masur/Minsky and Bowditch. We also shortly discuss the relation between the geometry of the complex of curves and the geometry of Teichmueller space.

We give a combinatorial proof, using the hyperbolicity of the curve graphs, of the bounded geodesic image theorem of Masur and Minsky. Recently it has been shown that curve graphs are uniformly hyperbolic, thus a universal bound can be given for the diameter of the geodesic image. We also generalize the theorem for pro…

We prove the equivalence of two conditions on the primitive elements in an SL(2,C)SL(2,\mathbb C) representation of the free group F2F_2 on two generators, which may hold even when the image of F2F_2 is not discrete. We give results on when a finitely generated group has only indiscrete embeddings in SL(2,C), with particular reference to 3-manifold groups.
