We present a new proof of the bi-Lipschitz model theorem, which occupies the main part of the Ending Lamination Conjecture proved by Minsky and Brock-Canary-Minsky. Our proof is done by using techniques of standard hyperbolic geometry as much as possible.
Formula for projecting geodesics in hyperbolic 3-manifolds, relating lengths to subsurface projections.
We give explicit bounds on the intersection number between any curve on a tight multigeodesic and the two ending curves. We use this to construct all tight multigeodesics and so conclude that distances in the curve graph are computable. The algorithm applies to all surfaces. We recover the finiteness result of Masur-Mi…
We give a combinatorial proof, using the hyperbolicity of the curve graphs, of the bounded geodesic image theorem of Masur and Minsky. Recently it has been shown that curve graphs are uniformly hyperbolic, thus a universal bound can be given for the diameter of the geodesic image. We also generalize the theorem for pro…
This is an expository paper. We prove the Cannon-Thurston property for bounded geometry surface groups with or without punctures. We prove three theorems, due to Cannon-Thurston, Minsky and Bowditch. The proofs are culled out of earlier work of the author.
We study analytically and numerically Minsky instability as a combination of top-down, bottom-up and peer-to-peer positive feedback loops. The peer-to-peer interactions are represented by the links of a network formed by the connections between firms, contagion leading to avalanches and percolation phase transitions pr…
Maps minimize periodic points for high periods, but not for low periods.
The paper studies hyperbolic phenomena on closed surfaces using bicorn curves.
We show that the strong asymptotic class of Weil-Petersson (WP) geodesics with narrow end invariant and bounded annular coefficients is determined by the forward ending lamination. This generalizes the Recurrent Ending Lamination Theorem of Brock-Masur-Minsky. As an application we provide a symbolic condition for diver…
We build an augmentation of the Masur-Minsky marking complex by Groves-Manning combinatorial horoballs to obtain a graph we call the augmented marking complex, . Adapting work of Masur-Minsky, we prove that is quasiisometric to Teichmüller space with the Teichmüller metric. A similar …
Let denote the genus orientable surface with punctures. We show that nested train track sequences constitute -quasiconvex subsets of the curve graph, effectivizing a theorem of Masur and Minsky. As a consequence, the genus disk set is -quasiconvex. We also show that splitti…
We analyze the asymptotic cones of Teichmüller space with the Teichmüller metric, . We give a new proof of a theorem of Eskin-Masur-Rafi which bounds the dimension of quasiisometrically embedded flats in . Our approach is an application of the ideas of Behrstock and Behrstock…
We construct a metric simplicial complex which is an almost isometric model of the moduli space M(S) of Riemann surfaces. We then use this model to compute the "tangent cone at infinity" of M(S): it is the topological cone on the quotient of the complex of curves C(S) by the mapping class group of S, endowed with an ex…
When two free factors A and B of a free group F_n are in "general position" we define the projection of B to the splitting complex (alternatively, the complex of free factors) of A. We show that the projections satisfy properties analogous to subsurface projections introduced by Masur and Minsky. We use the subfactor p…
Let M be a hyperbolic 3-manifold with nonempty totally geodesic boundary. We prove that there are upper and lower bounds on the diameter of the skinning map of M that depend only on the volume of the hyperbolic structure with totally geodesic boundary, answering a question of Y. Minsky. This is proven via a filling the…
We shall show that for a given homeomorphism type and a set of end invariants (including the parabolic locus) with necessary topological conditions which a topologically tame Kleinian group with that homeomorphism type must satisfy, there is an algebraic limit of minimally parabolic, geometrically finite Kleinian group…
In the context of CAT(0) cubical groups, we develop an analogue of the theory of curve complexes and subsurface projections. The role of the subsurfaces is played by a collection of convex subcomplexes called a \emph{factor system}, and the role of the curve graph is played by the \emph{contact graph}. There are a numb…
For the action of the outer automorphism group of the rank two free group on the corresponding variety of PSL(2,C) characters, two domains of discontinuity have been known to exist that are strictly larger than the set of Schottky characters. One is introduced by Bowditch in 1998 (followed by Tan, Wong and Zhang in 200…
A family of interpolating graphs $\calC (S, ξ)$ of complexity is constructed for a surface and . For these specialise to graphs quasi-isometric to the marking graph, the pants graph and the curve graph respectively. We generalise Theorems of Brock-Farb and Behrstock-Mins…
Let (X,d) be a tree (T) of hyperbolic metric spaces satisfying the quasi-isometrically embedded condition. Let be a vertex of . Let denote the hyperbolic metric space corresponding to . Then extends continuously to a map . …
Let be an exact sequence where is the fundamental group of a closed surface of genus greater than one, is hyperbolic and is finitely generated free. The aim of this paper is to provide sufficient conditions to prove that is cubulable and construct examples satis…
Uniform diameter bound for reflection group disk patterns.
Uniform bound on geodesic images for surfaces using bicorn curves.
A recent paper (\cite{BJM}) by Biringer, Johnson, and Minsky prove that any pseudo-Anosov whose stable lamination is the limit of disks in a compression body has a power which extends over some non-trivial minimal compression body. This paper presents an alternative proof of their theorem, using techniques of Long and …
We define a combinatorial structure on 3-manifolds that combines the model manifolds constructed in Minsky's proof of the ending lamination conjecture with the layered triangulations defined by Jaco and Rubinstein.
We develop an analogy between right-angled Artin groups and mapping class groups through the geometry of their actions on the extension graph and the curve graph respectively. The central result in this paper is the fact that each right-angled Artin group acts acylindrically on its extension graph. From this result we …
We generalize the notion of tight geodesics in the curve complex to tight trees. We then use tight trees to construct model geometries for certain surface bundles over graphs. This extends some aspects of the combinatorial model for doubly degenerate hyperbolic 3-manifolds developed by Brock, Canary, and Minsky during …
We give counterexamples to a version of the simple loop conjecture in which the target group is PSL(2,C). These examples answer a question of Minsky in the negative.
Using existing technology, we prove a Masur-Minsky style distance formula for flip- graph distance between two triangulations, expressed as a sum of the distances of the projections of these triangulations into arc graphs of the suitable subsurfaces of S.
A formula calculates the Euler class of foliations using dual graphs.
In this paper, we give a complete criterion for a discrete faithful representation $ρ:F_n \ra \pslc$ to be primitive stable. This will answer Minsky's conjectures about geometric conditions on $\H^3/ρ(F_n)$ regarding the primitive stability of .
Yair Minsky showed that punctured torus groups are classified by a pair of ending laminations (ν_-,ν_+). In this note, we show that there are ending laminations ν_+ such that for any choice of ν_-, the punctured torus group is transcendental as a subgroup of PSL_2 C.
J Hempel [Topology, 2001] showed that the set of distances of the Heegaard splittings (S,V, h^n(V)) is unbounded, as long as the stable and unstable laminations of h avoid the closure of V in PML(S). Here h is a pseudo-Anosov homeomorphism of a surface S while V is the set of isotopy classes of simple closed curves in …
Suppose is a train track on a surface . Let be the set of isotopy classes of simple closed curves carried by . Masur and Minsky [2004] prove is quasi-convex inside the curve complex . We prove the complement, , is quasi-convex.
According to an analogy to quasi-Fuchsian groups, we investigate topological and combinatorial structures of Lyubich and Minsky's affine and hyperbolic 3-laminations associated with the hyperbolic and parabolic quadratic maps. We begin by showing that hyperbolic rational maps in the same hyperbolic component have quasi…
Let be a genus Heegaard splitting with Heegaard distance : (1) Let , be two slopes in the same component of , such that the natural Heegaard splitting has distance less than , then the distance…
Suppose subgroups in the mapping class group of a closed orientable surface are given and let be the subgroup they generate. We discuss a question by Minsky asking when for handlebody subgroups .
In this survey paper we give a proof of hyperbolicity of the complex of curves for a non-exceptional surface S of finite type combining ideas of Masur/Minsky and Bowditch. We also shortly discuss the relation between the geometry of the complex of curves and the geometry of Teichmueller space.
These are problems on Heegaard splittings, that were raised at the Workshop, listed according to their contributors: David Bachman, Mario Eudave-Munoz, John Hempel, Tao Li, Yair Minsky, Yoav Moriah and Richard Weidmann. On pages 285-298 of this monograph (arxiv:0904.0017) Hyam Rubinstein gives a personal collection of …
One of the most useful tools for studying the geometry of the mapping class group has been the subsurface projections of Masur and Minsky. Here we propose an analogue for the study of the geometry of Out(F_n) called submanifold projection. We use the doubled handlebody M_n = #^n S^2 \times S^1 as a geometric model of F…
We prove the equivalence of two conditions on the primitive elements in an representation of the free group on two generators, which may hold even when the image of is not discrete. One is Minsky's condition of primitive stability and the other is the -condition introduced by Bowditch …
Let S be an oriented surface of finite type of genus g with m punctures and where 3g-3+m>1. We show that the mapping class group M(S) of S is quasi-isometrically rigid. We also give a different proof of the following result of Behrstock and Minsky: The homological dimension of the asmyptotic cone of M(S) of S equals 3g…
We provide a combinatorial condition characterizing curves that are short along a Teichmueller geodesic. This condition is closely related to the condition provided by Minsky for curves in a hyperbolic 3-manifold to be short. We show that short curves in a hyperbolic manifold homeomorphic to S x R are also short in the…
Study uses LLMs for financial sentiment analysis without fine-tuning.
Consider a geometrically finite Kleinian group without parabolic or elliptic elements, with its Kleinian manifold $M=(\H^3\cup Ω_G)/G$. Suppose that for each boundary component of , either a maximal and connected measured lamination in the Masur domain or a marked conformal structure is given. In this setting, w…
We give results on when a finitely generated group has only indiscrete embeddings in SL(2,C), with particular reference to 3-manifold groups. For instance if we glue two copies of the figure 8 knot along its torus boundary then the fundamental group of the resulting closed 3-manifold sometimes embeds in SL(2,C) and som…
We study the (relative) SL(2,C) character varieties of the three-holed projective plane and the action of the mapping class group on them. We describe a domain of discontinuity for this action, which strictly contains the set of primitive stable representations defined by Minsky, and also the set of convex-cocompact ch…
